I largely agree with that. The issue for me is more about how we play, not the shape. We need to play with more urgency, and get the ball into the midfielders or the channels. I also don't think we have a decent full back on either side, so don't have the personnel for a solid back 4.

Well we dont have the personnel for a solid back five either given how many goals we have conceded playing that formation. Given that we concede goals either way, I'd rather have more in midfield and less of a gap between defence and attack. Fellows is obviously better further forward and so I'd rather take a punt that they can create and score more that way than continuing to play negative, boring and defensive tactics that cause us to lose anyway.

Remind me what our formation was when we blew away every team in the first half on four different occasions?   Oh... that's right... five at the back.          It's weird that once the fan-base gets locked into a single explanation for our woes, any appeal to actual evidence goes out the window.   The first 20 comments on X on the team announcement are all winging about that one thing. As opposed to saying... this is about the best line-up we can field right now.     To me the main thing that's needed is a real commitment to moving the ball fast, even if that sometimes goes wrong.   When it goes right, confidence builds and we become unstoppable.  I think it's 50/50 that we return today to a thrilling first half and a minimum of two goals.

Our performances ( especially in the second halfs), form, and league position.

Whoever does the line ups on the official app clearly wants 4 at the back too cos that’s how they’ve put us there

Can you imagine a scenario where players were played in their proper positions…

Nice, right… 🥲

It’s so fucking infuriating supporting this hideous club atm. Making the same mistakes over and over and over

Should have too much for them today anyway with all their injuries

Have you noticed how we are one person down in midfield and all the other managers have cottoned on to it because we're wedded to doing the same thing week in week out? It worked to begin with before other managers realised how to beat us. Now we just pass the ball across the back line a lot and that's it.

Any idea why Stewart and Stephens are warming up with the starting 11 but the other subs aren't...?

Part of the “inner core”.

The “untouchables”.

The “ones who run the club”.

(I’m being sarcastic but I’m sure some will take it as fact). 😂

Maybe if we stop losing games continuously in the same manner, and actually start winning again and playing even half decently using this formation, then the comments might stop? Just a thought. It’s completely credible to share frustrations at a way of playing being continuously repeated despite zero recent success whilst playing it.

The other side of the coin, is how bloody frustrating it is to read the same whining, constantly. I'd love to see us playing 4231, but we haven't got good enough full backs to make it work.

Jelert and Wellington were full backs against Doncaster and were shite. People aren't thinking it through calling for the same in the league.

Upgrade the full backs, then 4231 is the way to go.

Agree but you can't do that if the majority of your possession consists of pointless 5-10 yard passes between the defenders and midfield especially with Downes playing bounce passes back to whoever gives the ball to him.

How the holy fuck does Manning get himself picked at LWB every week FFS? How shit must Welington be in training to not manage to displace him?

Thought welington was good in the cup.

guess the manager thinks manning offers more going forward but I’d prefer the one who is better defensively.

We'd be worse with a 4 imo. Your suggested line up ^^^ is the same back 4 as we played at Doncaster, but with Wood in place of Quarshie. It's a shocking back 4, and if it didn't work at Doncaster, it won't work against anyone in the league.

Anyways, it's been done to death.

Our fans would rather moan than get behind the team. They’ll change their tune when we smash Hull today.

That would make sense in a back 4, but Tonda has his hands tied and has to comply with Group Policy by playing a back 5. The crazy thing is that Wellington is better defensively, but is also more forward thinking too, although I suspect career stats say otherwise.

That's the team for the second half

Lots of complaints about back 5, most managers play 3 center backs when they don’t think they have a good enough 2 and in large part I’d agree with Tonda if that’s his concern

The stupid thing is, he isn’t even a manager, he is some puppet to the owners, promoted out of his depth to a level he’s never coached at before, because of some vanity project of Spors. Absolute joke the entire situation

This is the common thing now as seen elsewhere recently.

Frankly, I feel sorry for the bloke being put in this position at an early stage of his career.

Vanity project no doubt, but whose ? I still expect this all leads back to Rasmus, despite some protests to the contrary.

I'm expecting another good point today in Saints effort to stay clear of the relegation places. My hope and expectation is for lower mid table security. Anything more than that would be a bonus of course.

This is not directed at you spesifically, but I love all the different reasoning from people trying to justify 5 at the back:

First we were told we could not play a back four due to all our right backs were out injured.
Then it is because we have no suitable left back...
No, now it's becuase we have poor CB's

What a save

This is horrific. They have a massive injury crisis

We are already sat on the 18 yard line, with about 7 players there...

I hate this formation

No they don’t, this is a strong team they’ve put out. They’re only missing 2 or 3

Fucking criminal playing Tom Fellows as a right back. Get rid of these cunts asap. Manager, owners none of them fit for purpose
