East Kent Saint Posted 3 September, 2023 Posted 3 September, 2023 Only Motd but hardly saw JWP in the match apart from taking a corner or getting hit on the arm by the ball. When I saw him against his teammates he looked tiny !
AlexLaw76 Posted 3 September, 2023 Posted 3 September, 2023 (edited) Karen Brady on the radio this morning talking all things West Ham. Stated that JwP was the No.1 target very early for their manager, and Moyes is the one who identifies players with his team and scouts and then the discussions start. She also suggested that Saints wanted A LOT for JwP and it was Saints who contacted West Ham and made the deal (by lowering their demands upfront and overall). On the flip side, Semmens on the radio the other night stated that with Ralph, the manager did NOT have the final say on transfers as he was just part of the committee....which I found strange. Saint_clark Posted 4 September, 2023 Posted 4 September, 2023 Currently joint top for assists so far as well.
Saint86 Posted 4 September, 2023 Posted 4 September, 2023 We let him go too cheap. Was said at the time and it's becoming more obvious with every passing game. I just hope he gets his England place, but I think that needs a Southgate sacking (which should have happened after the Croatia wc semi anyway). 4
Sussex_saint Posted 4 September, 2023 Posted 4 September, 2023 (edited) The fact that players like Henderson, Maguire and Philips get picked but Ward Prowse doesn’t is unbelievable. Southgate’s team selections are shit Edited 4 September, 2023 by Sussex_saint 5

Convict Colony Posted 4 September, 2023 Posted 4 September, 2023 He basically picks anyone whose given him a reach around. 2
Sergei Gotsmanov Posted 4 September, 2023 Posted 4 September, 2023 Southgate has his favourites. He ignored Danny Ings when he was scoring 20 plus goals in an average team and he again chooses to ignore JWP.

Heard him referred to as the "Bargain of the Transfer Window" and while there's that nagging feeling we let him go too cheap, Downes coming to us was probably also part of the deal. Bit like Maddison also looking good at Spurs. Play with players who can putt away your passes/crosses/corners and you look a whole lot better. 1

He's been a media darling for half a decade. Every time we won a free kick commentators would go into raptures, and the media have massively over egged his contribution from corners for ever. 1

If you're looking at it as a neutral, he looks like a player completely rejuvenated by moving to a better side. Seems to have at least and assist or a goal per game at the moment? He never got anything like that attacking consistency for us. 3

Watching him score that goal I was reminded of years ago, maybe 2014ish, when I posted on here saying that I could see him emulating Frank Lampard as a goalscoring midfielder with excellent awareness of what's around him, timing runs into the box with perfection and getting himself plenty of goals. I was ridiculed at the time and over the years I accepted that I was probably wrong, but it seems as if we were wasting his talents this entire time and he is indeed a Lampard type midfielder. 1
Saint Fan CaM Posted 17 September, 2023 Posted 17 September, 2023 How depressing that this thread is still going strong (yes, I realise I’ve added to it!). It’s a bit sad that JWP seems to represent the pinnacle of what we’ve lost in player quality and a sure sign of how far we’ve fallen. 2

I don't believe any mainstream front line commentator or pundit has ever said anything like "if he was that good he'd been snapped up by now". He's had an excellent start at his new club and that's an interesting angle, that's all. 1

I agree that many pundits / former players were quick to praise him (except Southgate who regularly ignored him for England) but what was most annoying for me was that vociferous band of "Saints fans " who continually came on line and criticised him for doing " nothing special"....except maybe scoring those free kicks and the occasional penalty, when there was a group of " fan favourites " who contributed much less to the team's efforts. Now that he's playing for ..." a London Club "..and drawing M.o.M awards nearly every game - just how is he performing any differently ?. Right now we can clearly see what he brought to the Saints' overall team performances. There's a huge hole in midfield where he used to play. 6

Sadly i can't remember who it was, but it was discussed on TalkSport (i'm pretty sure by someone a year or two ago.....if i can find the link i'll post it.) Whether you consider the Danny Murphy's of this world as frontline commentator or pundits is up to you. The argument being that at his age (late 20's) if he'd been such a standout player why wasn't he being linked with big clubs. In fact, he wasn't being linked with any big clubs this time around was he? You know what i mean by big club - without shouting West Ham stats at me. Also, if you actually look back at his career at Saints it's really only the last 2 years he's looked like a danger from set pieces, and for much of his career he didn't really have a defined position. I'm delighted for him, and gutted he's not with us - but he's not been a stellar performer for us up until the last few years. 3
spyinthesky Posted 21 September, 2023 Posted 21 September, 2023 West Ham fans reckon he is the signing of the season and just think that quite a few of our fans didnt rate him!!
obelisk Posted 21 September, 2023 Posted 21 September, 2023 JWP always looked better when playing further forward. Saints seem to make a habit of making good players look average. 2
SW11_Saint Posted 21 September, 2023 Posted 21 September, 2023 Always thought his corners were a bit crap for us, but perhaps it was just those who were in the box waiting for the cross?

The only times I remember us scoring from his corners are a couple of Bednarek glancing headers at the near post. It just shows how shit we have been and still are at attacking the ball in the air. The Ipswich game was just heading practice for their centre backs from our corners. 7
HarvSFC Posted 22 September, 2023 Posted 22 September, 2023 Despite his height I think Vestergaard must have won a handful of aerial balls during his time here. He was awful in the air considering. Then you had Salisu, who had a 50p head in terms of attacking the ball. He was also awful in the air. 1
Barsiem Posted 22 September, 2023 Posted 22 September, 2023 Kudos to west ham for utilising him properly. He's probably a bit more relaxed and able to focus on his football without dealing with the sh*show here, as well as not having the captaincy currently 7
