We've never beaten Bolton at St Mary's so another record we can hopefully break

Haven't beaten them in the last 10 and all 5 at SMS.

I thought of them as being a bogey team but didn’t realise how sparse our record was against them, especially recently and at St Mary’s.

Nothing new though. When we were relegated to Division 2 in the 1970’s it was much the same.

Played them eight times over four seasons between relegation and promotion. No wins. Whenever they came to The Dell they’d have two brick shithouse CB’s who head everything away (often halfway into their own half) or just welly it as an up and under. No surprise that one of their Neanderthal defenders was Sam Allardyce.

We’d outplay them, not score and they’d break away for a 1-0.

Horrible team to play. In fairness they did look to be playing a bit more v Wolves from the highlights.

With Bazunu in goal I’m hoping for a 4or5-0, but going on history with them 0-1 would be no surprise.

I think you're all putting too much faith in Baz.

Surprised to hear they are only bringing about 1600 fans as they havent played at St Mary's for a long time, corner always looks a bit sparse with a half full away end

Hopefully we sell out the remaining 6/700 home tickets and create a proper atmosphere.

Don’t under estimate how tough Saturday will be when we’ve had Norwich on a Wednesday.
I went last night and I feel like a zombie today, if the players feel even 50% similar it leaves less than one day preparation.

Love the feel around the club now, so much more positive.

Jander won’t be allowed to play from start, he’ll freshen up a few imo.

It's annoying we can no longer move the segregation barrier and sell their empty block(s).

Can’t have a central midfield of just JWP and Bragg. Surely got to play Jander or find another option.

If Downes isn’t fit this will be what it will be.  Hopefully he recovers.  They won’t risk Jander from the start, I wouldn’t be surprised to see him not play any mins at all if we’re in a winning position.

No idea why everyone is saying it'll be a tough game. Yes their result last night was good but nothing else they've done this season has been remotely impressive. The sort of game we should win comfortably and if Baz is Baz any shot low and on target will be a goal

The other option limped off with a twisted ankle and potential ligament issues last night. Pretty sure it’ll be JWP and Bragg, maybe Jander to come on when needed later on

Last win against them in any competition was four days after 9/11. Pahars scored the only goal. Last home win was in 1995, David Hughes scored the winner.

Seem to remember they beat us on the opening day one year. Just looked it up and it was 1997, at home. My formative CM years just trying to keep Saints in the Prem. Poor line up that day. Found the highlights,  Nathan Blake scored the winner.

Line was:

Paul Jones

Ken Monkou

Lee Todd

Richard Dryden

Robbie Slater

Matt Oakley

Jim Magilton

Neil Maddison

Andy Williams

Egil Ostenstadt

Mickey Evans.

No MLT, Evans was soon sold despite his end of season goals, Lee Todd was just shite, Slater, Maddison and Magilton only played a few more games before they were transferred out. I don't even remember Andy Williams! Early days for Dave Jones though as he started his rebuilding process with ageing pros like Palmer, Hirst and Richardson.

Hopefully the modern day squad can get a result.

Literally everything is pointing towards a 1-0 win to Bolton with Baz scoring the winner with a 102nd minute header from a corner

Why do people have to exaggerate and make up ridiculous scenarios which are never going to happen…….Baz keeping a clean sheet, 😂😂

Haha. I just really hope everyone saying we're going to stick 4 or 5 past him doesn't backfire.

Not one for predictions, but I'd bet my house if it's 0-0 going into the 102nd minute, Bolton are not sending their keeper up for a set piece.

Why? We played 2 CMs nearly every post Still game last season, Downes, Jander, Charles and Bragg rotating both by game and in game. JWP has replaced Charles (not adequately in my opinion but there it is). Matsuki has slotted in on occasion.

Our record against Bolton is not to great, but we have not played them in the league since our relegation season in April 2005, over 21 years ago. So completely clean slate really. We will win this 5-0.

Wasn’t it Dave Jones first match in charge ?
Think it was, with Lee Todd starting, didn’t last long even with Dave Jones.

JWP is miles ahead of Charles for lots of reasons - IMO.  And I love Shea.

Literally always a 7/10, never injured, consistent and arguably one of the top 4/5 midfielders in the division. I’d say we have 3 of those 5 without knowing every single player I hasten to add.

Because they both lack pace and tackling ability.

The issue I have when JWP plays in midfield is that he can't tackle or press. I get that he has lots of other attributes but his inability to win the ball regularly or close down opponents does concern me.

I think I’d disagree with this, he played for Ralph and we were a proper red bull 4222 front footed team.  But respect your views.

Bragg and JWP played the second half of the Millwall and Bristol City games, both of which we were brilliant.

It was. Funnily enough as poor as the Souness season had been, he did leave us with Kevin Davies, who helped us finish mid-table under Jones. Which keeps this on topic with Bolton. 😄

This will be tougher than many think. Baz has a point to prove, he'll get stick from the stands, but he's a strong character, and I suspect after the match we'll be saying 'why didn't he play like that for us'.

It will be the usual story, they'll sit deep and Saints will have to try and pick a way through their packed defence.

Assuming Downes is out JWP, Bragg, and Matsuki to start in the middle. Jander to have 45 mins if required.

Dobbin will probably feature again, he did well on Wednesday.

The only players who get stick are the ones we didn’t want to leave. Seeing him in another teams shirt will bring great joy all over the stadium , no bitterness at all.

Yeah point taken, but he'll get the bird nevertheless to put him off.

To win 3 matches in 7 days would be very impressive, but it feels nailed on that Bazunu will continue his resurgence with his best performance at St Mary's for the benefit of the opposition.

Penalty save incoming.

I was reminiscing similarly with my father about those 70s Dell games Vs Bolton.

Expecting a rout against a bottom side is a dangerous prediction, but it is also the sort

of game that the "occasional players" might look to get some game time.

The regular " bench players" and those stand-out lads from the U21's might hope to

get a look in. Sam Edozie is a better player than many give him credit for, and his run

against the defender leading to Matsuki's goal was a gem, reminiscent of John Sydenham

who did so almost every game - back in the day.

Princewill Ehibhatomhan (a real tongue twister for all commentators) has had a great

introduction to the U21's with 11 goals from 8 starts, so far.  If the game is going our way,

where's the harm in giving the lad a chance ?.  We are too dependent on Larin, and for

all his effort and running,  Mubama has just one goal to his credit from 9 sub. apps.

Some of the reserve players will never get a better chance to show-up, unless we draw

a League Two side in the FA Cup in the New Year.

Loved the Bolton supporters on Phoenix Nights - the vertically challenged ones - 'how far away are they'?

They would be better off putting one of those in goal rather than Bazunu.

3-0 win, Fellows hat-trick.

I am sorry, I am afraid to say Sam Edozie isn't fit to tie Sydenham's laces. Sydenham beat his man and put over crosses for the likes of Ron Davies to score goals. Sadly Edozie has no end product. He beat his man extremely well on Wednesday but his ball across was not going to anyone ? it took a deflection from the keeper, a poor clearance, a save from a good shot before Matsuki was quicker to the ball than a defender to score.

Was that our strikers from the beginning of last season ?

Adam Armstrong showing the kind of willingness to put himself about that led to Wolves buying him.
