Pompey Takeover Saga

I was listening to Solent driving back from Fareham vs Sholing and heard the last couple of minutes. Pompey hit the post with pretty much the last kick of the game. Surprisingly I didn't near much booing, but maybe that's because it was drowned out by my laughing.

It sounds like words were exchanged in the dressing room at half time hence the two subbs being made, it's all falling apart Cook will be gone by Christmas.

Some suggestion that both players were auditioning to become fully fledged members of the 657 crew and it all got out of hand

Still a few pints with the Manager and Chairman down their favourite hostelry will put it all to rights

The club are now mounting an internal inquiry into the half-time dust-up.

It appears it was a little more than the usual difference of opinion that often punctuates half-time intervals. Possibly facial injuries to one of the parties.

When first asked about the decision to make two substitutions at half-time Cook said it was tactical, unaware that by full-time word had filtered up to the media there had been an 'incident.'

When pressed about the incident he initially denied it and tried to sweep it under the carpet and move on, but eventually, he fessed up.

I would not be surprised if the internal inquiry gives them the excuse they might need to jettison Cook.

They can't afford to terminate the contract of the best-paid manager in League Two, but might contrive to find a way to try and get him on gross misconduct in allowing this sort of disgraceful incident which has no place in a lovely, family-friendly and fan-run club, to occur.

The investigations are stacking up...

The half-time bust up, the appeal for cheating - those two are likely to delay even further the long-awaited forensic investigation into the decade of criminality in the old club with a similar name.

How is that one going?

When are they going to investigate why their team is crap?

And a nice bit of half time fisticuffs between the players as well, the comedy gift that just keeps on giving

I love reading the comments underneath, this one was great .

"One man understood how to entertain and utilise the Fratton faithful perfectly.....Harry Redknapp. Surely it's worth somebody from the board having the conversation with him...you might be surprised with the response "

I was also told that Cook did an interview the other week where he got narky that an interviewer told him a player would be suspended for the Luton game due to 5 bookings and he first denied it and then said "how should I know?"... well, because it's your job.

In other news, Newport got stuffed 4-1 at Blackpool, mainly due to bringing on a 35-year old day-before signing and playing him for the last half hour despite missing a penalty to go 2-1 up seconds before. I'd still have Graham Westley's quirks though, made them competitive practically overnight, though how much more game time Abdoulaye Meite gets remains to be seen.

A reasonable set of fixtures for December should see them mount a challenge to be top on their own what with the resources they have at their disposal and fortress fratton.

The manager and squad can take the pressure of expectation square on with unity, tactical know how and focus in their tool kit.

Isn't that a bunch of deluded extremists led by idiots who continually bicker among themselves, abuse anyone who is different, are facing an enquiry into their finances, and who want to live in the 1950s?

I don't know anything about UKIP though.

Lol.........

Don't worry, pompeyonline.com know the reason for their poor home form...

"I've spoken to a number of ex-Pompey players about what it's like to play at Fratton Park. The overriding sentiment is that, for players who are used to playing in front of typical lower league crowds, it can be extremely difficult to play in front of such a large and vocal home crowd. The pressure comes from the weight of expectation. They've all said that when we are on top, there's no better place to play. As for away teams, it's like going to a big ground in the FA Cup - there's less pressure, and that's why you see smaller teams rise to the occasion."

All this stuff about the crowds being too passionate or the job being too big for the manager, and the game being too big for the ref - it's bizarre.

If pressure was such a factor it would mean that every big club would lose to every small club - until the smaller clubs became bigger as a result, then they'd draw for a bit, until one club felt bigger and started losing.

Whilst there are definitely times when 'small teams' are more up for certain games and put in more effort, it shouldn't happen every week and if you keep losing to 'small teams' then you aren't a 'big team', you are a 'small team' with more fans.

If the Fat Pipe Park nerves theory was true - that they are secretly a good team who freeze at home - then they would be great away. They aren't. Truth is less prosaic - they've bought too many players who are good on their day but lack consistency. There was a reason those league 1 teams let them go you know Cook. Doh.

What total tosh. Every team everywhere turns up to win unless the disparity between the teams is so great that you know you are going to be outclassed. For an example of this, think of the smaller teams who qualify for the Rugby World Cup for example. They will go into a match against a top tier side like the All Blacks with a game plan such as 'score one try', 'limit their score below 30 points' etc because they know they just won't win so they concentrate on what is achieveable.

For any skate to believe this applies to them in their THIRD SEASON in League Two is unreal. They must have their head stuffed so far up their rectum their Adam's apple must smack them in the forehead every time they swallow.

It's just excuse making because the reality is far harder to deal with - they are just a small team on the south coast who were big when the Navy were in town 60 years ago but aren't any more. The eight years they managed in the noughties we're actually just a blip achieved by bent owners spending way above the clubs means.

Sort of like a football version of Le Chatelier's principle whereby you replace temperature, pressure and concentration with "club size", "noise of crowd" and "pressure of expectancy".

It's such a load of toss. Blackpool have been in the Premier League, Championship AND League One more recently than Portsmouth, and have one of the most well-known FA Cup wins of the 20th century, have a similar capacity of around 18,000, a much more modern ground and better facilities, and poached a manager (Michael Appleton) from the Skates only 4 years ago.

You don't find any of them rambling on about how difficult it is to play there or the "weight of expectation".

Of course, they only get 3,000 fans, so we all know who to blame.

Fourth

Lets just drink this in. They have been in the fourth tier for four years.

Look back to the start of the thread, the bluster, the arrogance. The absolute cast iron certainty they had as to their profile, their importance. They are, and have proven to be, on the back of their own highly self-publicised fanbase (the bestest)...... nothing but a consistent fourth tier club. Dreaming of League One.

All they have, and will ever have now is their history. A history that caused their current status, the most phyrric of victories ever seen in football. Moreso then Leeds' charge at the Champions League or anything even remotely similar. Icarus flew at the sun, Icarus sank.

In our lowest ebb we were streets ahead of them. In their current incarnation they will find it impossible to come near us, constrained by their own pride, arrogance and self absorbed nonsense.

I do believe it's fine to forget this 'rivalry.' In footballing terms it's dead. As irrelevant as Shrewsbury v Hereford, Port Vale v Stoke. Coventry City v Leicester. It is time to move on from the Skates, they are ancient history.

Whatever would we do if we were not able to look at this thread everyday:)

It's better than watching a troupe of professional clowns.

The novelty of custard pies and exploding clown cars can wear off after a few repetitions, but the fresh hilarity which results from every new hapless 'get rich quick' scheme of theirs is a joy to be savoured, and it never gets stale. Long may their slapstick antics continue!

And that for me just about sums it up.
