Gabbiadini

Aside from the goal, which was a show of great instinct, his hold up play and general demeanour was so much better yesterday. Great pass to Long for his chance. Shame we haven't seen the best of him because there is a great player in there. Maybe off in the Summer but if not would hope he plays a bit more next season.

There have been a few games this season where he hasn't looked too bad. He was taken off at HT away at Chelsea but I thought he had done ok. At Wigan he obviously missed a penalty (though great save) and a sitter, but he was also making good runs and looked a threat. Unfortunately there have also been a few games where he has looked disinterested or lost, but hopefully Hughes can convince him to stay and play a bigger part next season.

I think he'll be off to be honest, agree with other he has been criminally mismanaged and in a confident attacking team he'd score goals.

But if there are off the field issues with his wife I can't see him staying.

Don't think he's particularly bothered about being here and pretty sure he'll probably already have something lined up in the summer, but there is a decent player in there and it's a shame it's not really worked out for him here after the first few months.

He's got talent for sure, it's just he cant seem to fit into the way we have played (managers fault for sure!)

Seeing him at Fulham in the cup, he looked absolutely hacked off, Saturday night when we scored he looked happier, the fact that he was trusted in last nights big roll of the dice shows how much he has been rehabilitated (for want of a better term) by Sparky and his team.

Seemed a bit embarrassed and uncomfortable in the dressing room post match at his team mates bouncing round him singing "oh Gabbiadini" .

Unfortunately, it does look as if his time is up here. He's scored some important goals for us, he’s the sort of guy you want to see do well but generally he hasn’t seemed well suited to the cut and thrust of the PL on a long-term. He needs to head back to Italy where I think he's comfortable, then we can look to sign someone a bit more effective for us.

Was good to hear Hughes commenting on his positive spirit, keeping himself ready, not complaining about not getting game time, and delighted he took his chance. Maybe he'll leave for the sake of his missus, but he looks to be back to his sharpest.

im a big fan of gabbiadini and think he is basically suffering from lack of game time more then him being not good enough.. think there is a super player in there..my italian friend who is a napoli fan said he is best playing on the right and in his appearence yesterday looked very good when getting down that side. hes got all the right attributes makes inteligent runs is a instinctive finisher and you also tell he has a cracking long range shot on him.. i can understand hughes going with the likes of austin and long over him as players he can trust whilst we are in the relegation battle, but next season would love to see gabbiadini becoming a regular starter.

If I was him, I would want to move on. Must have been an awful season for him with Pellegrino as well as off the pitch. He came up with goals at a vital stage last year, and last nights was probably worth more than his transfer fee.

I have his name on the back of my shirt which I bought when the new one came out. Unfortunately he has only played a handful of times because the clown wouldn't play two strikers and didn't play Gabbiadini until he had lost his confidence and so wasn't chosen anyway. I will be very happy to wear the shirt on Sunday and would love him to stay and see what Sparky can do with him. But if his wife is homesick, even if Hughes could pursuade him that he has a future here under him, I still think that he would opt to go back to Italy, which is a great shame. A good player ruined by incompetent management.

I noticed that too but wondered if the cameraman missed it in all the commotion. Shame if he goes, his hold up play is excellent and really made a difference when he was on.

He has no relationship with Hughes either if you look at the afters Hughes goes to every player but avoids gabbiadini

My impression was that Gabbi wandered off and didn't really get involved in the celebrations until people started to collar him. Maybe it's just his demeanor but he didn't seem very happy

I think Gabbiadini is quite a reserved/shy type of character, so whilst it often looks like he's being ignored it's usually because he's not one to put himself forward. He's pretty well liked I'm sure, but he's just a very quiet guy.

Is it possible that is also to do with the language barrier with most of the players? Only a guess but would obviously play a part were it the case.

According to Manolo Gabbiadini's agent Silvio Pagliari, the Italian striker should continue his life in the English Premier League, although rumors have reported him to Italy.

Last night, Manolo Gabbiadini played a crucial role when scoring a late match-winning goal for Southampton against Swansea. Thus, the southerners are almost guaranteed another season in the Premier League.

If it is Gabbiadini's agent, this season is not Italy's last in the best English row in this round.

"He is pleased to be in England and it is a good challenge for him. There has been talk of a return to Italy, but I think his future is in England, says agent Silvio Pagliari to Radio CRC according to Football Italia.

"He is willing to give everything for the team and to do well, but if you struggle with relegation, it also means that it has not gone as planned.

Gabbiadini netted yesterday for the fifth time in this Premier League season. In the first half after the change from Naples, there were four goals in 11 matches for Southampton

I'd like him to stay, he's a talented player who showed what he could do when he first arrived. I feel we have hardly seen anything of his real potential.

Unfortunately he's been badly managed, even more so than the others, a real shame as as competent manager would have picked him a lot more and IMO we wouldn't have been in the situation we were in.

The stats say he massively goes missing with us. When I looked a few months back he was averaging a touch roughly every 4 minutes, half as often as Pelle or Lambert and well below Long/Austin. He's a big liability if he's our lone striker. IMO the opinions on him here are massively inflated vs what he actually produces.

On a positive note, I've liked his reaction both after the goal yesterday and from the bench in recent games when we've gone up. Looked like a good attitude.

A front four of Austin with Gabbiadini playing off of his shoulder plus Tadic and Redmond (Promes?) on the wings could be deadly. Two at the top I don't think will work as we saw at West Ham so Gabbi playing off of Austin instead of up front with him is crucial.

People say we should sign new strikers and I tell them, Austin and Gabba are fine for us and both will get 10 plus goals if played enough and used in rotation along with more attacking football, we just need better supply to them from better tactics and a better winger signed over the summer.

I wouldn't read too much into that, his confidence is pretty low which means he won't come looking for the ball and he's the sort of striker that makes a lot of clever runs rather that gets involved in the playmaking.

Plus we've been awful, with lower possession and less attacking play for most of the season.

And he's been coming off the bench lots, often very near the end of the game etc.

I doubt he had a huge amount of touches for Napoli but he had a good goals per minute record. Getting him playing well and the team playing better he'll score goals.

He’s looked completely devoid of confidence all season, to the extent where it does actually look like he doesn’t want the ball, so i’m not surprised by the above stats. After his goal on Tuesday he was absolutely everywhere, holding it up, playing clever passes, absolutely superb. I’ve been convinced since he arrived that he’s been killed by the players around him, his movement is brilliant but the supply has been awful.

I’m pretty sure all of his goals this season have contributed to points as well unless i’m forgetting any. 3-2 vs West Ham, 2-2 vs Newcastle, 1-1 vs Burnley and 0-1 the other night. So he’s actually played a huge part in our survival despite hardly getting on the pitch

Whatever happens next, he’s been the biggest part in my two best moments as a Saints fan for years. His two goals at Wembley, and Tuesday night. If we part ways this summer then he’s made a hell of a contribution and will always be fondly remembered.

Vardy almost never leaves the shoulder of the last defender. He's a longball/throughball specialist. Ask yourself these questions:

Is Gabbi good for balls over the top? No. Not fast enough. He doesn't have anywhere near threat that Vardy gives.

Is Gabbi good at getting to crosses? No. Not strong enough. Doesn't have a particularly good 1st touch either.

Is Gabbi good at setting up teammates? No. He actually hasn't given a single assist since joining us. Not one.

The only compliment I see of him is that he makes intelligent runs. That's all good and well except he's clearly not being found by those runs, so either they're not actually good runs, or our midfield don't think they can find him so don't pass. The way we improved as a team when Austin came back in was huge. IMO he's a good shooter but he's too easily defended against in the premier league and becomes too much of a passenger.

A 26 year old with most league goals in a season: 8. Benched throughout his career, played at 6 different clubs already and talk of him moving on to a 7th this summer. He hasn't been able to really find his feet anywhere.

Matt, I think you've got Gabbiadini all wrong. It's been the limited nature of our midfield which has held him back. If you look at his history he plays best on the shoulder of, or wider of the main striker..someone like Austin. The slow build up, "possession based game Pellegrino played ending in floated crosses didn't suit him at all. Go back and have a look at the Cup final v Man U and you will see a different player to the one you're describing.

well he set up Long beautifully the other night.

It seems you believe in stats, personally leave it to judgement. Id love o see such stats to an ex player called Ted McDougall. I doubt he touched the ball a few teams in games, but when he got the chance he buried it

I've seen Forster play blinders too. If Gabbi only shows up a couple times a year then why all the praise for him? Doesn't that mean he plays half-hearted the rest of the time? I dunno why he's almost universally praised here.

I would have been happy to have kept Puel and Redmond is probably my favourite player, so I'm in the minority on most things on here. Gabbi showed a few things the other night that made me feel if he got the right service could make him brilliant for us. I like Austin but boy is he greedy, and so slow, but saying that he does hit the target when he gets a chance. If we hadn't won at Swansea the love of Austin would have diminished somewhat as he failed to put away his chances.

Completely agree. The only reason Austin has more goals to his name than the other strikers is that he's a selfish whatsit who demands the ball of the midfielders and then once he has it, he NEVER passes if he has any hope of going for goal himself. So many times he should have laid in a teammate in a better position but he never does.

As for Gabbi, he's a finisher. He's the fox in the box. When the ball is in the box he's the 'go to' man. The ball comes his way, he will finish it.

Whatever happens with Gabbi, we've had some great games off him since he joined. Not quite sure I'd put him in the "cult hero" bracket but the history books will tell you he's the bloke who got the goal to effectively keep us up, so he'll always be remembered fondly enough.

Loved the club's video of the players singing "OOOOH Gabbiadini" to him in the dressing room! Clearly he's popular enough with his team-mates.

Stephens spoke very highly of him in his post-match interview as well. Said he's such a great, nice lad. Be a real shame if he leaves, I think we are lucky to have him, just need to get the best out of him.

Anyone who judges whether he should stay or go on the basis of one goal is nuts. His overall contribution, bar his first 4 or 5 games, has not been good enough. The general consensus on here is “never again”, that we don’t want to go through that again, yet people are still proposing keeping him. One of our major errors is not getting a regular goal scorer capable of staying fit in. If he played for Huddersfield or Swansea like he has for us this season, and we were rumoured to be in for Him people would be going nuts. Unless he wants to be third choice behind a new striker and Austin then it should be, Thanks for the important goal, good luck and good bye.
