Pompey vs Saints - Sold Out

I can only assume you're not from Southampton as you don't appear to get the rivalry.

It matters not a jot what league they are in, all that matters is it's Portsmouth against Southampton and for me and I suspect many others it is the biggest game of the season. Games like this are what supporting Saints is all about, and 'winning in itself' means everything.

Very strange post.

I really don't get the excitement playing a pretty average division one team. Over the last sixty five years we have hardly ever been in the same division for very long. when we have played them we have pretty much come out on top most of the time except for the period approaching our relegation and the cup game at St Mary's when they were too good for us. There never was much of a rivalry in the early years, this has only developed in later years. I see them for what they are, a club that took millions out of creditors pockets, should have been liquidated and really have just staggered along for the last eight years in the lower divisions.

They are full of their own inflated importance. If we really wanted to take them down a peg it would be better to ignore them and treat it like a game against any poor opposition. Personally I expect a lot of huffing and puffing and a likely win unless Ralph has second thoughts and avoids risk, in the light of losing Redmond, Djenepo and Obefemi and sticks in most of the surplus to requirements who should still win. Winning in itself won't really mean anything, so what, we beat a mid table division one side, last round we beat a mid table Championship team.

Some of the Carabao games are being streamed to ESPN channels in the US. If it's not on Sky we might be on one of those.

That person isn't me , I hasten to add. I've got many different memories of Saints/Portsmouth rivalries. First is being on one of the buses that got stoned by skate fans. That was the day we were confident of thrashing them on their own ground and we had carried large blow-up fishes (purchased from Grimsby) into their crappy stand to antagonise them. But we got drenched and lost. And the downward spiral towards relegation from the Premiership began.

Wind back 70 years and Saints had twice missed out on promotion to the First Division despite having Charlie Wayman in the team. Portsmouth were flying, and we were jealous. Then we became relegated into Div Three (South). I remember the south of England had no real top teams, and the Echo featured all the Hampshire league clubs of the four main tables in bold type. That included Saints, Portsmouth, Aldershot and Bournemouth. There was a sort of feeling of Hampshire teams v the rest, (but I was only a nipper, mind.)

There was more rivalry between the docks and Portsmouth became bigger villains. They took trade from Southampton. The rest is history. And nothing is better than beating Portsmouth. I also want revenge for what the skates did to Saints during our last relegation year.

I do have one grudging respect for the Portsmouth fans, however. When they went into administration and were facing ejection from the English football leagues, their fans got together and reformed Portsmouth as a fan-based community club. Saints failed to do that when we were in trouble.

Portsmouth 1-Saints 2.

Bring it on.

I went to Springhill school in 1947 opposite the Dell and supported them ever since. I really don't give a stuff about Portsmouth. I think I've lived in Southampton longer than almost anyone on this site. No tourist.

They were only able to save their club because two administrations diluted their £140m worth of debt down to a tiny sum of money. It's a joke they got away with it.

A few years later there was footage of Napoli copying our arrival at Fratton station that day on.

That video is mental - I made it over 3 minutes of watching Napoli fans walking past making all that racket. About a minute in, some middle aged woman is trying to wheel her suitcase through the hordes when a copper stops her for her own safety.

Napoli are quite loony, from what I've heard, not too clever a town to visit even just as a normal tourist.

Indeed. Let’s not stoke the Portsmyth that we couldn’t be arsed to save the club and they could. By the time their “community club” was launched, their debt was tiny. We would have needed to raise £15m to save Saints. And most of their money came from speculators looking to do a property deal, anyway.

Plus there was a queue of people lining up to buy Saints so it would have been irrelevant what we could cobble together, we couldn't have brought it without serious dough.

Will qualify more than easily, especially as one of the few at Everton in the cup last season ;)

Also who said warriors? Not one of those things suggested that. Just normal fans who make a racket, there wasn't even any mention about replica kits in my post.

God people on here over react about things that WANT to read, rather than the reality.

People over-reacting and posting self-opinionated hyperbole on an internet football forum...? Nah... Can never see that happening...

Yeah, right. Don't buy a ticket "if you are a women". Jeez. Oxbridge set strikes again. A women at a footy match? Unpossible!

He’s right though, for every woman there will be a good lad sitting in a pub somewhere but can’t get a ticket because some dopey bint only there because she can’t bear the idea of her boyfriend/husband enjoying himself without her got one.instead of being in a pub He’d have gone, had a few beers, given it large, mewnwhile she’ll be there not really sure what’s going on, taking selfies, taking boll9cks and moaning about he Fratton Park toilets. Or there is the other geezer bird type that thinks she’s a bloke and tries and fails to act all laddy, usually getting the players name wrong, so vile she can’t get a fella so instead tries and fails to be one of the lads and is an embarrassment to everyone. To be blunt I’m not sure which one’s worse.

I’d also like to add....

Anyone who would consider buying food/beer/refreshments from that club, don’t buy a ticket.

It amazed me last time round, that despite their club being in financial ruin, the queue was still probably 100 deep to get a burger and/or beer and in doing so funding that club.

Get a meal deal from Tesco’s before or after the game rather than giving your money to them.

If you wear facepaint and/or fancy dress to football, don’t buy a ticket.

If you don’t want to hear nasty words and will text that grassing hotline, don’t buy a ticket.

If you wear a replica shirt, don’t buy a ticket.

If you’re a women or under the age of 16, don’t buy a ticket

If you're from the 18th century with an IQ of less than a 100 like SKD don't buy a ticket.

Utter fool. Portsmouth level thinking.

Last time I was at Fratton for a Saints game it was for the Alan Knight testimonial and we were kept in nearly an hour and rocks kept being chucked into our end. When we were finally got out I had to nip through the police cordon as I wanted to drive back to the east and an escort to the station wasn't helpful! Went back up an alley but wasn't wearing colours so had no problems. They're an even odder bunch than some of the guys on here. Many of my team support Portsmouth so if it's on the Wednesday I can see training being called off. Saints must wine or like Monk I'll gets loads of grief.

PS: Monk, aren't you working for Chelsea anymore, was hoping to scrounge some equipment this year!? If you're working for Portsmouth we've a few old cones we can let you have..

It’s embarrassing that people can’t go an hour or 2 without food. And you might want to try and look at how gate receipts are split for cup games before making a sarcy comment :mcinnes:

Yes, the 4-1 was awful, but we beat them twice that season (once under Wigley in the league, and knocked them out of the cup under Saggy). So we actually did better against them during that terrible season than against most other teams.

Great fans, make an amazing atmosphere. Yes they have there unruly element like every club but no mugs in face paints, wigs, fancy dress etc. I think they were the creators of the allez alley song Liverpool nicked and claimed as their own. [video=youtube_share;iNvOt2yDUI4]

The city itself isn’t much to look at, although it does have some nice areas, it’s a very working class city but it’s surrrounded by some for he most beautiful parts of Italy down the amalfi coast.

And the home of the Cammora, one tough place but southern Italy, Almalfi coast down is fantastic. Great fans too.

Just a thought, England at St Mary's in a couple of weeks may have an extra edge now, will they be 'bubbling' any visiting skates? :p

That's a direct steal. Those red scousers nick everything, songs included. Next time one claims how original they are with their songs, I'll remind them of this, along with how crap their famous atmosphere really is most of the time, unless they're playing a "big" team.

Love Naples and Napoli (not just because the best TV show since the Sopranos is Gomorrah). Back in '08 (around the time of the original video Turkish posted) a few Saints mates (most of which post/ have posted on here - morning chaps) and myself went over to watch Napoli vs Lazio. Bonkers. Lazio fans were banned due to Napoli fans rioting in Rome in the previous fixture. still utterly mental over there. As soon as we got out the Sao Paulo station a geezer in a "Headhunter" baseball cap asked if we were Tottenham and fancied it. When we replied "we're Saints Mush" that threw him and he mumbled something about Le Tissier and left us to it. Huge tifos directed at the local government for not paying the Camorra enough to make them clean the rubbish from the streets and then later from Curva A to say they'd had a whip round to pay the fine for the crime committed by the lads from Curva B at AC Milan away (€10k I think?) and they should thank them for it. No one seemed to pay to get in the Curvas. No women. No kids. Just fellas from 14 - 60 in all looking smart AF in decent gear. Not a replica shirt in sight in any of the 4 stands. Air bombs, flares, showers of bottles thrown onto the tracks whenever a player missed a half decent chance and just a general moodiness I'll never forget. And Lavezzi. Wow! What a number 7! Maginificant player. Since then Napoli have been "my team" in Italy (despite the Roma/ Palermo alliances Saints fans have built up since then ;))

Few points re the derby.

Sorry but the points above are totally true. This is not a game for the faint hearted. Like it or not the atmosphere will make a difference! This is no place for women or kids. Shirters that film themselves for YouTube channels can stay home too. If you're gonna go hood up, wear black, don't grass, give it everything you have to get behind the lads and be as nasty and vicious as you can for any skate (fan or player) that gets close to you. Be aware they will do exactly that to you/ us/ our players if they get have a chance.

I should add that it is a fact that the skates bottle it against us when it is not tilted in their favour. Just look at how pathetic their support has been at EVERY game down here I can remember (first one the 3-0 drubbing in '96). They freeze. They grow up on the myths of their lying dad's and uncle's telling them how scared the scummers are of them etc etc and it destroys them every time/ generation that they see the whites of our eyes. They can't handle the myth being destroyed in front of them and they melt. EVERY time. Make sure this time is no different.

On the pitch my opinion is the same now as it was in '96. If both teams play to the best of their ability we win 3-0. Let's do our bit off the pitch eh.

Up the ****ing Saints!

This is absolutely f*cking EVERYTHING.

So if you didn't want to draw them, don't buy a ticket.

If you think staying up is more important than winning this, don't buy a ticket.

If you're not going to sing your f*cking heart out, don't buy a ticket.

If you're going to take photos or videos, don't buy a ticket.

If you're thinking about vlogging, don't buy a ticket.

If you'd buy a Saints/Pompey half half scarf, don't buy a ticket.

If you think people who don't wear replica shirts are "thugs", don't buy a ticket.

This is the single best draw possible, absolutely buzzing for it.

Really glad you're excited, and I'm happy for you that you'll have a great time. Just don't go expecting us to win.

Great draw for the "banter" of a derby, terrible draw for bragging rights. 2-1 to the f*cking Skate bastards. It's so obvious. #angryatjusthowrubbishwereallyare

I wonder if Mr Nike tracksuit from Leigh Park who kicked the Sunderland full back and the poundshop Mick Hucknall made infamous at the play off game will be there in the crowd?

Probably will be knowing the skates. Mind you, I don't think he'd be having a sandwich with a major filling from Tesco's as not many teeth to chew with.

Depends on your definition of kids (under 14-15 I would agree, but above that they can usually maintain their composure in the face of the disfigured).

But as for women...some of you really need to join the modern day. Women are just as gobby and capable of holding their own these days. Plus, i've seen plenty of women making a lot more noise in a crowd than most of the blokes around them.

I agree about the people who stand there recording themselves all game though.

Basically, I think that no matter who you are, if you are going then you HAVE to make noise. Don't let the side down. Don't take a ticket that I could have had when I would have shouted and chanted to the point where i'd be tasting blood for weeks.

Those who complain about or don't like woman at football have simply been turned down for sex too many times, and/or are extremely conscious about the lack of length their genitalia possesses. Same for blokes who don't like it when other blokes wear certain things.
