Jay Rodriguez with his first competitive goal since March 2014.

Thoughts?

Hmmm. At least it's not 0-1. Much better in the second half. We're going to have to score in Denmark.

They came to play the averages and the odds, and do a job on us. Fair play to them, they did just that. Very organised team, but definitely beatable if we step it up a gear.

On to Watford now...

Pelle, JWP pretty good

Romeu very decent.

Rodriguez clearly getting better

Stek is very steady.

But the 1st half was disgusting.

You look at the side. We have not improved a single player from last season.

but lets be honest, we have gone massively backwards from last season. no where near as good.

of course we were going to lose a couple of players but thinking our recruitment has been on the very cheap side and it shows

Mostly poor.

None of the new players bar Stekelenburg have made any real impact let alone improve us.

Too much long ball to Pelle, midfield looks a shadow of last season.

Defense looks shaky and not creating much from open play.

Ronald doesn't look happy and something missing from the team, drive passion, interest, team spirit? Doesn't look like many are "enjoying their football" or "playing with freedom".

Fair play to Midtjylland, they executed their game plan perfectly. Would've liked to have seen us play a little higher up the pitch tonight, it seemed at times like we didn't have a midfield - Wanyama and Romeu hugged the centre backs and our forwards played very high and close together. Much better in the second half though, play like that for 90 away and we'll win.

Very important to beat Watford at the weekend now though, looks like the players are just missing a spark of confidence..

Utter dross again. Passing poor, no creativity, defensively dodgy. Amazing decline really

Really? I thought we created a fair few chances, but didn't get enough behind the shots if anything. Wet pitch didn't help, but both teams had to play on it.

Defensively, I thought we were pretty good - Caulker especially. Just didn't find the back of the net enough.

It takes a certain kind of determined narcissism to have composed the post-match reaction thread and be hovering over the 'post' button before the game has even finished. Congratulations - you can now see your name on the thread for the next couple of days. Does this help fill whatever void you are trying, desperately, to fill?

Don't really understand why we went long so much. We had more than enough quality on that pitch to do better.

Still signs of improvement.

Losing Toby and Morgan has shredded the core of the team at the moment and it shows. So vunerable at the back. Not at all helped by the settled players being injured and selling clyne.

Thought Target had a really good game tonight, did that one run in the first half that gave him so much confidence. Hard for Yoshi at right back. Can caulker do anything but head the ball?

Romeu looks very card prone. JWP set peices were our most threatening moments, but didn't offer much else.

Onwards and upwards I suppose!

Some positives to take from the game, but overall it's disappointing not to be going into the away leg with a healthy lead.

Poor defensive organisation lead to their goal, which is frustrating.

Mane was lively but too selfish at times.

JWP had one of his better games and his set-piece delivery was very good tonight - just well defended by FCM.

Romeu looked good and will only get better. If Wanyama can actually get his head in gear (which he hasn't done yet this season) then we could potentially have a very good DM pairing.

Goal for J-Rod. Very good to see even if it was from the spot.

Targett looked much better tonight than he did in either of the PL games so far.

Caulker got better as the game went on (or as the Danes dropped off) and was always dangerous from setpieces but made two or three glaring mistakes that could have been very costly. Not very mobile and his distribution is gash.

Wow and it takes a certain kind of **** to turn on someone for no good reason, back under your bridge you sad troll.

In patches we were good, in patches we were horrifically bad.

For the first goal the 2 defensive mids went completely missing.

Caulker had a goal unluckily chalked off.

We got a penalty, Jrod scored if not imressively.

After that when you think we might have pushed on. We played horrifically badly.

Really not impressed by Romeu. Once again could easily have been sent off. Gone backwards in centre mid over recent years. No one in the league of Morgan or Cork to partner Wanyama.

Yoshida doesn't strike me as a right back. Why have 2 right backs on the bench & none on the pitch.

What a f**king mess we're in. I hope Ralph Krueger calls Les Reed into his office tomorrow. Or maybe hes too busy counting the profit hes making for KL...

Oh come on mate. We just drew a game in the Europa League! hardly a mess. I was there when we got beat by Rochdale - that was really ****

Defence was really all over the place tonight. Fonte and caulker looked on a different wave length and yoshi at right back can't happen in the next leg. He was an accident waiting to happen. Not enough creativity and resulted to the long ball. The only time we played decent football we scored the disallowed goal and then won a penalty.

I'd like to see us play our own game in Denmark and not set up and play to their strengths. By the way time wasting from the 30th minute must be a first.

Positives - Pelle was excellent. JWP had a great game - the best in a Saints shirt for a while. Caulker much improved. Targett had some better moments, although also a few not-so-good moments. Romeu added something and contributed. What was lacking was the link between defense and attack. Koeman asked them to play direct to try and get through the Midtdtdtylland midfield block and in some senses it was working, but although Pelle was winning almost everything in the air we created little as a result - the runs off him and around him didn't come together. Best chances on the whole from JWP set pieces (which were superb).

Who knew that exciting European football could be so boring.

I was a bit concerned by the shots of RK at the end. Looked a beaten man to me.

Quite, he was staring at his feet, and you could just see the thought 'I could be Netherlands boss if I wanted' echoing in his mind.

Probably a blessing in disguise if we go out at this stage. Let's face it last season's team might have had a chance of going quite far in this competition. However, the team now is looking extremely weak and has virtually no chance of progressing to the latter stages. Better to go out now as we will need to fully concentrate on maintaining our position in the Prem without the distraction of these Thursday games which totally disrupt the training regime and build up for weekend matches.

Successive annual evisceration of the team is doomed to lead to decline. No amount of black box wizadry can fullly mitigate that.

Would you rather have a team that finished just above relegation, and therefore didn't have players of the calibre of Mane, Scheinderlin, Clyne, J-Rod, etc ? We are playing at the top table, and there are some bloody big, very rich, and extremely greedy clubs at our end of the league, whom we cannot compete with in the wages stakes.

it goes back to the point. no team ever, in the history of the premier league has lost the amount of players we have in the space of 12 months

not sure even Leeds or Pompey did
