Charlie Austin

Think crooks comments show how little he knows about saints . Sure mane will be gone in summer . Perhaps we wouldn't of gone for Austin if JRod was fit or was coming back soon.

Ever noticed that Crooks speaks with long pauses in the middle of sentences? That's because his brain is so pathetically underpowered., his mouth needs to stop every two seconds to allow the brain to catch up. One of the most useless pundits in football.

Crook banned me from his Twitter just before Wanyama signed but not before he told me I didn't know what I was talking about. I just politely insinuated that he was talking rubbish and that Wanyama was signing. I'll always remember the hoards of Southampton fans who agreed with him and abused me

Looks like we're doing the "sign players now for wages which look big now but will look small when the new TV deal kicks in", I'm all for that.

Also a useful addition now many more sides are going with 2 up top again, as well as just having a few weeks of playing without Pelle, compared to previous occasions where he was linked when he'd have been a Pelle replacement and we'd have had to use one or the other, or played him as an AM.

Great value.

Do people really think we are paying CA £100K a week (really)??? Where is this from - the porn kings?? Apologies if that is not what you meant The9. Honestly after all the talk of sustainability and bottom four budget etc. etc., does anyone think we have suddenly done a complete about face? I have read anything from 40k to 100k, and think around 60k is probably the right mark - some reports quote he was on 50k at QPR. Of course I have no idea what he is really on (only CA, his agent and club really know that), but if he apparently was not wanted by any bigger / higher clubs than us, and preferred to be south coast, why on earth would we turn our model on it's head to accommodate a very welcome, but ultimately not a "do or die" player? Could be wrong but I just don't buy it!

Pleased as punch we got him though, and if the club feels we can afford him, it's more than good enough for me!

The Lancashire Telegraph published an article stating that Burnley will get a small sell-on fee (15%) from Charlie's move from QPR to Saints.

It would have course have been considerably more.... had QPR sold him for the £15 million they touted last summer.

The article also stated that Saints will pay QPR an extra 500K - if he scores 12 goals in the remainder of this season....and another 500K if he goes to Euro 2016.

Whatever the outcome....if one ..or both of those conditions are fulfilled, then he's still ....an excellent deal.

Austin will on talksport after 10pm tonight in case anyone is tuning in.

I tried to listen to it, but it was so grating on my senses, that I was in danger of driving off the road. Wouldn't it be kinder if Jason Cundy was taken into a field and shot?

Charlie was not mentioned as a guest on the "show" whilst I was up to listening.

They said he had texted and couldn't make it but would be on later in the week.

Was a painful listen, especially when Cundy said that Mignolet signing a new 5 year contact made him think he was definitely going to be Liverpool's no 2 keeper next season.

Despite Goldstein asking about 10 times why it meant that, Cundy was unable to really answer.

Then Terry the Cabbie from Romford called in saying West Am would win the title.

It makes me cringe to think that anyone so highly paid as it is would throw their toys out and ask for pay rise to match another employee. If they do they should be fined. The club should pay what it wants to who it wants. The Southampton Pay.

Its hardly throwing their toys out to expect to get paid a similar amount for doing similar job with same employer. Its a very reasonable attitude.

The club have finally decided to ban this lowlife after numerous complaints. They have had enough of the grubby sensationalist waffle thats come from him and his staff that ended up on comics like the daily star. No Saints will be surpised and many have been embarrassed that Crook has been allowed entry ever since he was a partner in the orchestrated 'Meltdown' articles of May 2014.

Today Alex Crook has been accused of making up the entire Shane Long tosh thats appeared in the medial.

Would take that with a mountain of salt, tbh...

Well if we are going to be pedantic, then, no, those from RoI are not British even though they come from the British Isles. To be British, as I am sure you know, you have to come from Great Britain (which excludes Northern Ireland as well).

Not strictly true, If his grand parents were born before 1923, Ireland was part of UK, so everybody born in Ireland were British citizens. My father was English, my mother was born in Ireland before 1923 so was a British Citizen with Dual nationality which I also have. If Long wanted he could claim a British passport although I couldn't see why he would but he would be able to have dual nationality.

I'd expect a player of Southampton to raise this issue via their agent when they're in talks regarding a contract extension, not before or after. Everyone knows that in the footballing world players are on different amounts, mostly depending on how good they are. Outside of football i'd agree with you. There aren't many businesses where its employees are also its assets.

When I was an employee, we were always being told that we were the company's greatest assets. Usually this was shortly before they made us redundant of course :)

Of course a player would bring this up when negotiating a new contract as any employee might do whether or not an agent is involved, but nevertheless it is hardly throwing their toys out to do so. Trouble with so many companies these days they keep salary levels private so its difficult to know if you are being paid badly compared to your co-workers or not, whereas footballers' salaries seem often to be common knowledge.

When QPR were trying to get Charlie Austin to sign a new contract a the start of last season it was reported that he was on £38k a week. It was his refusal to sign that led to the present situation with his contract running down. IMO he probably is on a par with our highest paid players.

That's how people work, unfortunately. There have been all sorts of studies showing it's not how much you earn that affects your happiness, it's how much you earn compared to your peers. I think we'd all be disgruntled to have a new employee come in and do our job for double our pay, no matter how happy we are with our wage.

The Guardian has Andros Townsend going to Newcastle on loan and then permanent at the end of the season for £12M.

Apparently, Spurs wanted £14M but nobody was interested. Charlies an absolute bargain compared to that.

The chance to sign Charlie Austin was a no-brainer! Anyone who wants to sign Andros Townsend for that money.. .has no brain :D

When you're receiving as much more money as Saints will be next season, and know that all of your competitors will also be receiving that much more money, you have to plan and adjust your wage levels or you end up missing out on players you could have got because someone else is paying more.

That is still sustainable because the sums received have gone up, and wages ALWAYS end up rising to offset the additional money. But there's an uncertainty about where the new wage level will be that enables Prem clubs with their heads switched on to give new players wage increases compared to their old club, but below the levels their peers will be at in a year or two's time.

Basically, everyone's going to be paying more to the players even if the transfer fees don't necessarily go up. If we get in early and commit them to more than they're getting but less than they'll be worth, we can pay less for a bit, then pay more later when everyone decides to renegotiate their wages after seeing what the new signings are getting.

The extra money gives us the chance to buy better players for relatively low wages in a window before the overall wage level goes up - that's not just the likes of Austin, it's also just-below top-level European players with good experience who aren't getting as much for their current team. As long as we get the contracts signed before the inevitable wage hikes we'll get good value. Stoke did it in the summer with Shaqiri.

In short, we might not actually be paying £100k yet, but a player of that standard will probably expect that much in a year or two anyway, so why not go in just below that now before it becomes expected?

This doesn't follow. Under uncertainty of any kind -for instance, knowing where wages will stabilise with the new TV money- it's just as easy to overshoot; indeed against a backdrop of rising footballers wages, the risks of overshooting are even greater.

The rational response, especially where an action is binding and irreversible -and footballers wages soon become reference points for others both at a market and club level- is often to wait and see (see real options theory).

Basically we bought Austin because we can afford him and some of the wage is absorbed by the low fee we paid QPR -not because we think we know where wages are going to be in the dim future and we can perfectly time or position our offer. Don't be such a try-hard pal.

Btw, you never did get back to me on Shane Long where you embarrassed yourself and shat the bed. But apology accepted anyway - as you like to remind me, I'm on your ignore list.

I don't know about anyone else, but I am really excited about this signing. Austin has proven himself at PL level already and all the news coming out of Staplewood is that he is ready and raring to go. The lad clearly has a point to prove and can't wait to start.

Frankly, with Long, Austin, Mane and Pelle up front we are in good shape. I would even argue we can afford to lose Pelle or Mane in the summer as long as we keep hold of the others.

I say give him a go against Man U and see what he does

It's on the main board either way I like the sound of him - down to earth but driven to succeed
