He's the natural captain. I would like to see Jack as Club captain and Jan as Match captain.

I'd say that Flynn or THB are more natural leaders. When he first joined us he did used to visibly flap when under pressure, and English isn't his first language of course. I don't remember too many times when he has been sent out to face the cameras post match either.

That said I feel like his game has really come on since returning from Villa, and he is rightly amongst the first names on the team sheet and our first choice centre back. Keep up the good work Jan would love to see him sign up for another 4 or 5 years.

Possibly not infront of the cameras but if you watch him on the pitch he's always shouting instructions, organising the defence, sticking up for his teammates, in the referees ear etc. He did an interview last year and he sounded extremely focused and driven - unwilling to accept second best (his English is very good now) I'd say he'd make a very good captain.

I also have no doubts THB and Downes will make great club captains one day.

I think he's doing pretty well back in the Prem. Improving through sheer experience if anything. He's not getting moaned at as much on here and he himself doesn't seem to moan as much as he used to.

I always felt a bit sorry for him tbh. He never did get the benefit of another experienced centre back to learn from. Unlike Yoshida he didn't get to play alongside Fonte, Alderweireld or even Lovren. A year with Fonte at the club would have been good for him I'm sure.

Biggest comeback for a player in our history?

Relationship with the was 0. Sent out on loan to Villa. Said some unwise comments on joining Villa. Recalled by the Welsh wonder, derided by fans on his return ... and now looking like a solid player.

You know what, fair fucking play to him for knuckling down and winning said fans back onside.

Still shocked he didn’t get a red card. Saying that, still fairly shocked Fraser did get one last week.

Too much uncertainty whether THB would have got across to cover, and it was clearly a genuine attempt to play the ball. Would have been a travesty if he had been sent off for that.

As for Fraser - he cynically pulled down a player who was about to tap in to an empty net. Clearest red card for DOGSO you'll ever see.

There's no comparison whatsoever between the two scenarios.

Also worth noting Michael Keane only got a yellow when he tactically brought down Archer, who looked to be running through at the time.

Consistency.

He suits a system of having to defend with the ball rather than without it. He’s good on the ball and a good reactive, recovery defender. He’s exposed when it comes to having to defend his box and go up against powerful forwards at this level.

Archer was running more towards the corner flag than the goal.

As above, Bednarek's tackle was worthy of a deep amber, but not a red.

About as professional a foul as you will see, without a sending off.

He’s loss will be huge for the next month. There aren’t many things to shout about but he’s certainly been a brighter spark than most.

More bad luck for the bad luckiest team what there has ever been in the history of the Premier League.

If anyone can solve the issue of being without a below average premier league centre back for two games it’s Russ.

Now JB is injured, we’ll go 4 at the back as Martin won’t have to shoehorn Stephens into the team.

We have a German international centre-back on the books.

It is criminal that he’s not being used instead of the Devon Beckenbauer.

Lets be honest, with Russell Martin at the helm, it's not going to make the slightest difference to our results anyway.

ABK clearly hasn’t got his head in the right place, or he’d be in the team, or at least the squad. Ridiculous that’s he fallen from a place in the German WC squad to where he is now.

As for Stephens, it’s a bit low referring to him as the Devon Beckenbauer. He’s the Cornish Maldini.

It’ll still be trotted out as an excuse over the next few weeks though.

Its not revisionism for me to say I was never really a big fan of Jan. Never really convinced me and was part of some terrid performances that are etched in my mind's eye.

It was kind of expected but I'm very glad to get Bednarek off of the books. We will never have to see his trademark post-howler shoulder shrug ever again. By the way, only defender to have started both 9-0 losses. Absolutely shocking he stayed this long.

Never know a player to be at fault so many times, and then see him gestering at other teammates blaming them. JS to go and I would be happy with this transfer window, but with the new cone-tract its unlikely.

Good move for all parties IMO. Had good spells when the team was properly structured, high availability and got his head down and was largely excellent in the promotion season.

Good luck to him.

Yeah, we've never had a good defence involving Jan Bednarek in it, not even in the Championship two years ago. He's been the best of the centre-backs for some of it, but it has been a very low bar.

Of course, he has had a redemption after the Villa interview and refusing to play in our biggest game of the season against City in the cup because Poland were playing a week later.

However, Bednarek has been taking up a squad place at this club for years now and we could do a lot better. I don't think he'll get much game time after the first month at Porto.

He served the club well. It's not the players fault they are still in team if heading towards retirement or making too many mistakes.  It's stupid managers asking the team to keep passing ball back to defence. Also managers fault for not lining up a replacement.

Can’t say I’ll miss his fucking dopey gormless face looking around for someone to blame every time we concede, although he was ok in the championship and wouldn’t be our worst defender next season.

Can we tell Porto we have this fantastic player named Jacko Stephano we’ll chuck in for free as a sweetener.

His 42k per and transfer fee can be put to better use.  Not our worst defender but never really inspired.

Wast bad at championship level but never convincing in the prem

Wish him luck but good for both to go in different directions.

I'd rather lost Stephens given a choice.

Glad to see the back of him.  Wasn’t our worst defender though.

I have never rated him, but in truth he's the best defender at the club currently and amazing as it sounds, we looked worse last season when he didn't play.

The time has come for change though, so fingers crossed Quarshie can be a better player.

This is the one I have been waiting for literally years to happen. Please let it be true

I think ABK is more befitting of that.

Agreed. Good move for him. Personally don't really get the dislike for him to be honest, Did a decent enough job, and for the money we paid for him was a good value.
