The past doesn’t mean they will be good for us this year. AA didn’t fizz on loan with WBA. BD didn’t fizz at Sheffield utd.  There are a lot of other components as well as experience which will decide whether we are top 3 or not. We have a lot of known unknowns at the moment and recruitment is one of them.

What the fuck does fizz mean ?

Sounds like this one is in the bag. Congratulations @CSA96 for breaking the story!

Fair play to their negotiating team though!

We offer 'over' €10m and they negotiate us down to €8m up front and 'up to' €2m add ons.

I'm just going to play it safe and wish the guy a happy birthday, as we wouldn't want another Delgado situation on our hands.

I would have done so but had a yogurt in the fridge about to go out of date.

How did the medical go today?

Hopefully he didn't fail, or else they'd bring out a big green tarp and... sorry, wrong thread.

Ah so is this where the saying "an apple a day keeps the doctor away" comes from?

Group Technical Director Johannes Spors said: “Damion is a player we have been monitoring for some time who possesses excellent physical qualities and the ability to disrupt defences.

“Strengthening our attacking options was one of our top priorities this summer, and Damion is a player who will add real quality to the group. Despite his relatively young age he is already a senior international, so we are excited to see him thrive in the environment here at Southampton.”

Damion Downs said: “Everybody plays football to win titles. To win my first title at 20 last year was a great feeling, and I hope to repeat it again this year.

“I think Southampton is a big club that should be in the Premier League, and that’s my goal – to help the team as much as I can to bring the club back to the Premier League.”

Another in untried and untested addition. Let's hope this one comes good.

For context, this fella is kept out the usa side by someone who Derby are close to signing.

To be fair, our fanbase should know better than to judge someone by who they're being kept out of their national team side by. National teams are weirdly political things at times, especially in the US with the MLS dynamics

Good supportive comment! Let’s see what he can do. We didn’t know Ricky Lambert when he signed!

I'll support him all the time he is here. My point was that it is another massive gamble by the club at a time where we cant afford to gamble.

Who would we sign that isn’t a gamble? Realistically

I'm hoping this bloke will be decent but there were clearly players who could have been less of a gamble. Sargent pretty much guarantees goals at this level but I accept we've gone down the potential with a higher possible ceiling instead.

We have players that can guarantee goals at this level already but are pants in the level above, but yeah, hopefully Downs has a far higher ceiling.

Got a good feeling about this guy, think he could be a very decent signing for us, and finally an athletic powerful frontman that we probably havent had since Pelle left.

Oh right I didn't realise there was a limit to players who guarantee you goals. We don't have anyone in our squad who has the highest goals to game ratio in the championship for I think the last three years though.

The Southampton way

We get this every year and it's a ridiculous comment. He hasn't been written off by fans.

No, you’re right, let’s sign every striker in the Championship!

Welcome to the club Damion. Obviously too soon to tell whether we've signed another Mara or another Mané. As always, time will tell...

I get the sense he hasn't been brought in to bang in a load of goals next season so hope nobody is expecting 20+. I reckon 10-13.

Would be a very good number if Stewart/Archer chip in as much as they should.

Norwich want around £20M for Sargent and he has Premier League interest. Signing proven Championship goalscorers when you're in the Championship is very difficult, besides which we already have a few in our ranks.

Whoever we sign will be a gamble but Downs looks like a good profile.

I saw 15 million mentioned and I would have hoped we would at least have asked the question. I am aware that signing Championship goalscorers is difficult, I wouldn't expect otherwise.

I'm also aware that there is an element of a gamble with every signing but it's why I said "less of a gamble" in my post. I'm not sure what you're arguing with me about here.

I prefer Downs to Agyamang from the clips I have seen on youtube (that's all i have go on as not seen either in a full game yet), but it will be interesting to see how they compare.

Good luck to him.  Hope he does well.  Will be a good barometer for our new recruitment set-up.

Indeed. I am sure that every poster on here shares these sentiments. No one has written him off as some people claim.

Fricking awesome signing, this dude is gonna make at least a dozen and half goal conversions in the 2025/26 Soccerball series. Great work Southampton Saints, we brought this one home!!

I like this signing. I hope he's not the only out and out Striker we sign but someone who is a full international at 20 is not bad.

Clearly a powerful player which we've lacked, and i think him, Archer (despite what others may think, Im confident he will prove good this season), and A.N.Other (better) will be exciting.

I knew exactly what we signed with Lambert!! Proven goalscorer at that level. Was a brilliant bit of business!!

Yeah my post isn't meant as a criticism. I get the sense from Still that his style of play doesn't rely on a main man and we should see goals from all over the forward line and midfield.

For context, this fella was selected in the USA squad ahead of someone who scored 31 goals in the Championship over the last two seasons.
