I don’t think Edwards and Wood are displacing Quarshie based on this. BBD truly awful, Archer looks fairly bright and Downes looks like he has the pashun that has seemingly made Stephens our star man 🤣

Over the summer I was excited for the return of the football season.

Second game of the season and I remember how dull it is to watch saints each match 🤣

This has been one great big turd of a performance and Still is going to have to find a way to polish it

Not the prettiest performance, but we’re through!

Would have been the easiest game in the world for a player that’s not committed to go missing in, but we got  the exact opposite from Fernandes.

That was dire. We won it with our one piece of quality play and a clever finish from Fernandes. Not many pluses there but I thought Wood played very well and looked more reliable than Edwards. Not sure about the back 5 as it leaves us very isolated in midfield. Wee Man did a good job when he came on. The rest MEH

That was fucking shite.

Not too keen on the adaptable Will Still set up of sticking with 5 defenders and hitting early/long.

Downs was shite - should have signed Kieffer Moore instead of him, at least Moore would suit our new style

5 defenders is awful - yet to see us look good with that formation.

Won again by the fact we have better players, little to do with style or patterns of play

So. We can't defend set pieces, Sugawara is a truly awful player, ditto BBD. Squad depth is poor, desperately need new signings if we're going to compete across a long hard season. Not sure what Still had planned but hopefully not that rubbish of a performance. Positives - we won. Did I miss anything.

Fernandes is still here

saints undersevedly won 

Thought Taylor was decent at the back when he came on

Main negatives were the forward line being absolutely vile, seeing McCarthy in goal for another season, and most players looking like they couldn’t be arsed

100% win record for Still in competitive fixtures.

 

If we win 59 odd games playing badly we win the Championship, FA Cup and Carabao. Look at the positives people. 😜

He can't be that good or he surely gets in ahead of what I've just watched tonight 🙂

Standard early season cup game really, the only memorable one in recent years has been that 8-0 away at Newport.

They're always pre-season friendly-esque, just like this one really. Nothing to really talk about, other than what we already know.

Archer has such a poor touch, and BBD is simply not a professional footballer. He reminds me of the centre forwards you see in Sunday league games, I'm not kidding either. How can we get rid of him?

Anyway, next round.

I thought he had absolutely no problem tonight - which isn't exactly tough considering it's league 1 opposition, there was 1 decent cross from their left all game when Fraser was out there on their winger.

That continues in a long Saints tradition of a crap game in the early rounds of the League cup against lower opposition. Followed often by a crap season..

I don't like to be negative but where are our goals going to come from with that forward line. I won't judge Armstrong today but Archer and BBD?? At least Ryan Fraser has strength and was trying which is always a saving grace and I suppose Archer was to an extent, but BBD?

Our passing was poor, if we weren't doing aimless long ball, although perhaps WS was using this game as an experiment.

We certainly need to keep or have somebody like Fernandes.

Seriously, this is getting ridiculous, I don't want to defend the guy as I don't rate him for the PL but what is with the Sugawara hate? He didn't really do much wrong at all today and yes, I endured watching the entire game.
