That's a very odd point to make though - if that's the one they're making. It's not uncommon for resuscitation efforts to go for up to 20 minutes, sometimes more.

I went to that game, although it wasn't my first, so I knew we wouldn't win every week. However, if you only went to home games, as I did in 1986, it sure felt like it as we beat QPR, Liverpool, Newcastle and Spurs in the first couple of months. Obviously it didn't last.

Was Colin Clarke any good? I always felt that he needed about 6 or 7 chances to score. Luckily for him, we created a lot of chances and thus he got 20 goals. Would a better striker would have got 30+ or have I done him a disservice?

I was 10 so I probably wasn’t analysing it very deeply but I loved him. Retrospectively I think he was probably quite an old fashioned, proper 80s centre forward. A bit uncultured by today’s standards but put himself about, gave central defenders problems and could score with his head or his feet. And I think you’re right that he probably missed a few, but in the top division he scored 20 in his first season with us and 16 in his second, which is pretty damn good by anyone’s standards. Clarke, Rideout, Shearer, Ostenstadt, Davies, Beatts, Pahars, Lambert, Pelle, Ings… we really have had some quality no 9s over the time I’ve been a fan. 

Maybe Larin will bang in a brace on Saturday and go on to join the list

According to a co-pilot search (so probably wrong), the last Saints player to score a hattrick was Rickie Lambert in 2012.

We are definitely overdue one.....

Interesting stat ?  

We've kept more clean sheets (3) in the handful of games that we've played 4 at the back than the 2 (Swansea/Millwall) clean sheets achieved with 5 at the back over nearly 25 games. The clean sheets with 4 at the back are the the two recent games v Stoke & Sheff U and the home game in September against Pompey. 

It does make you wonder why both Will & Tonda were so stubborn in giving it an extended go. 

Of course, it may be absolutely nothing to do with formation, just the fact that Mssrs Manning, Bazunu and Wood have been removed from the team ............

Wasn’t v Sunderland because I was there for that one.

Sadio Mane in May 2015, fastest hattrick on record against Villa (6-1). I'd ignore co-pilot if I were you.

5-2-2-1 (etc) is a dreadful formation. 4-2-3-1 allows us to play further up the pitch and carry more threat to the opposition, as a result we aren't pushed as deep and the opposition gets less chances and less dangerous ones at that. We also have one of the best squads in the league and should be worrying the opposition, not the other way around.

To be honest I think a win with a number of goals including a debut one from Larin would help the crowds. Last time I did the sums the cost of my season ticket per points and goals seen was horrific.. I also can't remember when I was really relaxed about a lead and not worried about a defensive collapse.

Need to win tomrorow. The outside chance of the playoffs will improve if we put together a run of wins from the winnable games coming up. this is about mindset.

Fucked off that it’s a 12:30 kick-off.  Might have to miss going.

Just keep the same side that started v Stoke.  Larin should be ok for 25 minutes when Ross gets rested.  Be interested to see what he’s actually like.

Gordon Simpson left the club recently who used to do all the social stuff and marketing/comms, he was a saints fan from southampton who actually got the city and what the club means to us, it would appear whoever they've replaced him with has the knowledge of hamster who's been drinking bleach
