goodymatt Posted yesterday at 16:09 Posted yesterday at 16:09 (edited) Short term contract until end of the season to cover 3rd keeper slot whilst McCarthy is out. Edited yesterday at 16:11 by goodymatt
Saint_clark Posted yesterday at 16:11 Posted yesterday at 16:11 He's not on loan, he's on a short term contract and was available because he was on an amateur contract for Warrington Town in the league below the national league north. 20

You’re right, just a short term contract. Can’t see how to edit the title though, help me out please mods.
badgerx16 Posted yesterday at 16:15 Posted yesterday at 16:15 Signed for Warrington on 16th January, less than month later joins Southampton. 3

With that kind of high ceiling, SR will be making him our number one for next season. "He leapt up the ranks last season" , said Rasmus, delighted not to be bothered with looking or listening. 🙂 3
SNSUN Posted yesterday at 16:22 Posted yesterday at 16:22 Best hope Peretz doesn't get injured or sent off then. I have never seen Long play and nor do I wish to. Let alone this guy. At least Alex was experienced. We could well have seen Alex's last appearance for us then as he's out of contract in the summer. 1
Baird of the land Posted 23 hours ago Posted 23 hours ago Really bizarre.take it that the mccarthy out for 2 weeks is misinformation and he is really out longer.
coalman Posted 23 hours ago Posted 23 hours ago You have to admire Rasmus' spreadsheet and his ability to find a 3rd keeper that scares me even more than George Long 2 14
Midfield_General Posted 23 hours ago Posted 23 hours ago So just let me understand this. If Peretz gets injured, it’s former Norwich third choice George Long in goal as first choice, with a signing from Warrington on the bench. When we’re one point off the play-offs, with the opportunity to get back into the Premier League and £140m at stake. Is that right? 19

Curious how it affects the emergency loan rule if peretz and long get injured.
Lighthouse Posted 23 hours ago Posted 23 hours ago Don't forget that McCarthy has to come back and put in three fairly good performances before the end of the season, so we can inexplicably give him a new two year deal. 5

Looks like he's made well over 400 pro appearances, mostly league one and league two, but has played 36 times in the Championship - last with Wigan in 2022/23 where he played 17 matches - guessing he was second choice. I'm sure if we had to sign another keeper, we could've got someone slightly better on the free market, but guessing we're just praying Peretz doesn't injured. Shame we couldn't tempt Stuart Taylor out of retirement.

Palace's old keeper Guaita may be 39 but he'd have been a better bet surely! 2

Palace's old keeper Guaita may be 39 but he'd have been a better bet surely! Signing a backup keeper who's already injured. Resale value aside, the most SR move possible. It really is slim pickings when you want someone who speaks English, is ideally already in the country/doesn't need a visa, and has played to a decent level. You can't get PL keepers in on emergency loan to the lower divisions, so any worst-case stopgap loan would be from the Championship and below (and how many Championship clubs would want to do us a favour?). Is a George Long or a Jamie Jones who's been training with the side a better bet than whoever we can get in the door on loan from L1 or below on a couple of days' notice? Hopefully we never have to find out. Edited 17 hours ago by chiknsmack
trousers Posted 17 hours ago Posted 17 hours ago (edited) Would now be a good time to dig out that @Matthew Le God post telling us not to fret when we signed Norwich's laughing-stock 3rd keeper as there was no chance he'd ever get anywhere near playing...? 🎣 You just know how this season is going to pan out... #sosaintsy Edited 17 hours ago by trousers 6
St. Ciervo Posted 16 hours ago Posted 16 hours ago Did I miss something? What happened to McC? Splinter infection? Spa injury? Strained a wrist while counting free money?
Holmes_and_Watson Posted 15 hours ago Posted 15 hours ago 5 hours ago, Football Special said: In one of my local, far from league football games, our 'keeper blindly passed out from a pass back. Had he looked, and hit the ball more than half way, he'd have noticed his full back taking a drink and finishing a chat with the manager. Needless to say, it got intercepted, they scored and we lost the game. That was a few seasons back, and none of those involved, including the manager, were long for the club. One of the most infuriating goals I've watched. So like us to sign the professional equivalent.

St. Ciervo Posted 12 hours ago Posted 12 hours ago They missed a chance to have fan tryouts for the position. What a joy that would have been and equally effective.
coalman Posted 8 hours ago Posted 8 hours ago At the end of the season, McCarthy goes, Baz wants gone and Peretz goes back to Bayern to fight for his place. Leaving us with George Long and Jamie Jones whom we convert to long contracts. Plus Ramsdale who's happy to warm the bench at Newcastle on mega wages rather than playing. A goalkeeping tour de force which could only be made more ridiculous if Long and Jones refuse to sign on. 1

Right. But we've got a 21 year old, Hugo Fisher, on the books. So we're basically saying that he is worse than someone who couldn't get a club above the 7th tier of English football. 2

I don't understand this latest "we need 3 goalkeepers" fad, isn't that exactly what the youth is for?? And yeah, if they are THAT bad, we (as a club) are doing something horrifically wrong. Mind you, I can't ever recall Saints producing a goalkeeper from the academy of any note, am I wrong? Edited 5 hours ago by Patrick Bateman 2

leesaint88 Posted 6 hours ago Posted 6 hours ago Memories of the Kevin Miller signing, who was working in an office before getting the gig for us. In terms of the set up, I noted that Alfie House explained it. McCarthy is out for a few weeks, Dylan Moody has some sort of illness which has kept him away for the last month and the U21 keeper is only 17. It seems Jones has been signed as chief tea maker until Moody returns to take up the role. 1

I remember posing this very question on here a couple of years back, and I think the answer was 'Michael Poke' (who made the grand total of 4 first team appearances, all in the 2007/08 championship season). As a club with a renowned academy (historically, at least) it's perhaps a tad baffling that we've practically never bred a keeper good enough for the first team. Wonder why?
