Hmm.interesting re. Stewart. He definitely needs his minutes managed, so with him and Larin basically sharing a striker’s spot it’s kind of ideal for him. But he may not see it that way, and with a World Cup now on him, he may be looking for more. Massive risk for any team signing him and expecting him to start 30+ games a season.

Solak says he has authorised the signing of a top player who can be creative and help Finn Azaz, as right now all of our creative reliance in midfield is on Azaz and if he's having a quiet game we don't have anyone else. Having another player like that will help, we can play the two together and/or rotate them

Otherwise, he says that business this summer will be based on signing direct replacements for any players who leave. Happy with squad size and team showed last season what they are capable of, so doesn't feel it needs a huge overhaul like in previous years

Agreed. We got nothing out of that first year of his contract, he was injured. He needs to repay that by giving us that extra year.

Not sure that's true. He's a big game player and is still very young. I think he's good enough to play in the Prem and has a high ceiling.

I keep hearing this about Shea Charles from lots of fans, that he’s one of the most certain to leave this summer. He may be, but I don’t know where it comes from. He did some really good things for us no doubt. But, towards the end of the season, he wasn’t a starter for us. You’d think we’d only lose players (that we don’t want to lose) to the Premier League or abroad. Just don’t know who is lining up Shea Charles, unless Charles thinks he’s going nowhere here and actively wants out come what may.

But for United? He wouldn't get a start... let's not forget that he wasn't in our first choice eleven this season. Somewhere like Everton or Fulham would be a better move, but I can't see him playing often enough there either.

He said we'd let players leave based on how long they've been here and their contracts. Based on players who may be in demand imo that makes Jander and Scienza less likely given they've only just signed for us. Maybe he means THB but some people have suggested he may be up for staying. He suggested in the interview that Azaz is staying so Charles is the most obvious one left .

It’s a pony hipster phrase, but I’ll use it. His “ceiling” is what we’ll be losing, rather than what he’s actually producing week in week out. He’s not a guaranteed starter, was left out of big games, and personally I find him a bit too lackadaisical sometimes. But there’s no doubt there’s a talent in there. As disappointing as it will be to lose him, we’re strong in that area and Flynn Downes, despite being less talented, would probably be more of a miss. If he won’t sign a new contract, and we need to shift someone on, it makes sense it’s him.

100%. He's the player we would miss the least given we have to sell some.

In my eyes there’s no maybe about it. Flynn Downes from January was like the Flynn Downes when we got promoted, an absolutely vital cog and made us tick. Shea Charles is a talent, but when Downes is at it he’s a 7+ almost every single game.

Agree to an extent but ultimately he has to look after number 1. Say we offer him 1 year extension and he gets offers of 2 even 3 on similar money elsewhere he’d have to take the alternative. I guess it’s all down to how good the alternative bids are.

Ross is likely being advised by his agent but he needs to be careful. This football club stood by him for long periods when he was unavailable, we've been extremely patient. He must realise that he is not suddenly going to be injury free and another club might give him less slack than we have. You'd think he would want to show us some loyalty but, as with integrity and fair play, that's a precious commodity in the murky world of football. At the end of the day it's his decision but hope he stays.

It's only bizarre because he is a City boy, not United. He is easily good enough for a top club in the PL. Hope he does stay but we didn't treat him too well when we loaned him out last season and may not feel so much of an attachment to us as some do. He will be a great player.

Very encouraged by Dragan's response and makes me 100% committed to the club for yet another year.

We could've triggered the contract extension earlier. Waiting to see how the playoff final turned out isn't exactly a ringing endorsement. He also probably wants more than 1 year. I can see why he'd want to look into his options. 

Even if I also feel like we've spent a lot of time taking the footballer we bought and getting him playing again.

Compare him to Mateus Fernandes who at 19 you could tell he was destined to play at a big club. I dont think Charles is the same calibre of player at the moment, although he does seem to have the knack of scoring very important goals

With Ross he knows his time is limited, so I can't really blame him if he gets a big pay out elsewhere regardless of how much we nurtured him through his injuries.

He's got the World Cup to showcase himself after all.

Quite the day.

Lots of players will be seeing the advantages of staying with an in-form, promotion chasing side. From the rewards of promotion. But also the shop window, and satisfaction, of regular games at a very high level.

There may be some PL clubs enquiring. But some thought has to go into potentially joining a side that comes straight back down. Then you've got the same wage reduction, and possibly less chance than we have of going back up. The sign on and PL wage spike may not be worth it long term. Not to mention upheaval and possibly just being a fringe player.

Hopefully Bree sees it that way, and decides to stay. It's been a tough time for him under certain managers. But he's a consistently strong performer for us.

SR set their stall out to pay wages that made transfers attractive. So, I can see him weighing up his options.

Stewart is a different scenario. He's had a good end of it the season for us, with managed minutes. He's only played one season with over 25 league games in it.  That was followed by 4 injury ravaged campaigns. Then this one, where he got injured in the early part of it.

Sure, he could look at extending with us. Whether out of loyalty for previous injuries, or because we'll continue to manage him.

But at 29, and with that injury record, I do understand him wanting to look for the best deal for him and his family. A guaranteed PL, or higher wage than ours, would make a difference should another injury occur. He'll have to stay fit over the World Cup, so he can get that best deal, wherever it is. A long term injury now would be grim for him

Don't know if he'll develop into more than he is but seems to me there's a lot of recency bias rather than season long view. His strength is as a DM and we've got a number of CM with that trait at the club, whereas Charles is our only CM who offers more of a threat.

He needs to be consistently good. He was great at the end of the season but was completely gash in January and February. Leicester away was a real lowpoint.

According to Solak we had to trigger it within 5 days after the last game of the season but we didn't know we'd had our last game of the season.

The last game of the season was cancelled for us, so the previous last game was over 5 days away - I don't think it was something the club could help, just yet another resulting effect of the OTT punishment.
