Alex McCarthy looks set to retire. Unconfirmed, just from someone I know.

Surprised the full released/retained list hasn’t been done yet.

Google search.

Championship clubs must notify the EFL of their retained players by the third Saturday in May. Clubs competing in the play-offs are granted an automatic extension, while exact dates for publication to the public vary by club. [1, 2, 3, 4]
The deadlines and submission rules include:
  • Initial Notification Deadline: Clubs must formally notify players of their contract decisions and submit their lists to the English Football League by mid-May (for example, May 16th). [1, 2]
  • Play-Off Exception: Clubs that are involved in the end-of-season play-offs receive an extended deadline to submit their lists to accommodate their prolonged season. [1, 2]
  • Public Release: While lists are submitted to the league on the EFL's primary deadline, individual clubs have some flexibility on exactly when they make the news public. You can check BBC for rolling, league-wide announcements or your club's official site for hyper-specific local dates. [1, 2]

  • Southampton FC has not yet published its full official men's retained and released list, though reports indicate it is expected to be released shortly. The delayed publication stems from the club's extended season, as they were knocked out of the Championship play-off picture. [1]
Current expectations for the squad updates include:
  • Women's Team List: The Southampton FC Women's Retained List was officially confirmed, showing seven out-of-contract player departures, including club captain Atlanta Primus. [1]
  • Key Retained Elements: Reports from fan sites like St Mary's Saints indicate plans to keep essential figures such as James Bree, Ross Stewart, Daniel Peretz, and Cyle Larin. [1]
  • Potential Expiring Contracts: Per tracking from the Daily Echo, first-team players whose deals expire this month include Alex McCarthy, Joe Aribo, Will Smallbone, Charlie Taylor, and Oriol Romeu. Striker Ross Stewart has been offered an extension but is still deciding whether to sign

A quote from a Foxes of Leicester article about the likely appointment of Martin and the prospect of him signing Smallbone and Bazunu (they obviously do not look at the stats or this forum):

With Bazunu in between the sticks, a promotion challenge could be on the cards.

Keep on praying lads and lasses; make it happen.

🦊🦊🦊 👍    😇

First Vestergaard and Bertrand, now possibly Martin and Bazunu...we are not going to be flavour of the month with many Leicester fans.

I would, he always was and always will be a journeyman who can take a good free kick. Otherwise he is just average crap

We are talking about a guy with well over 400 PL appearances that played for us for 12 years. Your definition of a journeyman differs from mine. He may not have been a great PL player, done a lot since he left us or what we need now, but describing him as a journeyman? Nah, I'm not having that.

That's interesting.

There's seems to be a school of thought that Bazunu would be 'okay' for League One.

This means I could have played professional football in goal instead of Salisbury and District, Southampton Junior, Wiltshire League, Commercial Houses...I could have earned money playing football....darn it.

Based on his record with us West Ham paid £35m. Maybe he did not continue his form because when he left us his heart wasn't in it as much....

To be fair he was half decent when Moyes was there. Nuno didn't rate him at that was that.

I always felt that JWP's natural inclination was to play safe, recycle the ball and retain possession.  He'd be perfect for a Russell Martin side.

I think he did score a corner for West Ham, so technically he has surpassed Beckham's record for set piece goals 😄🙃

Kenny McKenny left Ipswich, interesting, presume that means no £8m release clause for them...what a shame.

Where will he go? Surely he's got a new job lined up

I don't want ward prowse back  but Matt Grimes didn't have a bad season this year in championship and he hasn't played to the level prowse has previously..  but it time to look forward not back..

I thought Jander and Downes made Grimes look pony when we played them. I'd rather keep them two (if possible) than sign Grimes.

I couldn't see Grimes making the step up if we do want to get to the Prem either. Coventry will replace him.

Who’s the twat that always scores against us for Bristol City?

Surely he’s worth a punt if we’re looking for a number 10.

I think he was a pretty good PL player.. good enough to win England caps..

His corners were fine from what I remember. But for several years we failed to sign anyone who could attack the ball and head it in either box.

I don't know, but I'm assuming Romeu will be leaving. And again, I don't know, but assume that he has been a role-model and mentor for some of the younger players in the squad, although he didn't get many minutes on the pitch. He clearly thinks highly of Saints. I would say JWP could fill that role and we'd probably get more minutes on the pitch from him, even if he isn't always first choice. I'm generally not a fan of players "going back", but it seems to me this would be a good fit.

I also see Jiminez has left Fulham and gone back to Wolves. I wonder where that leaves Adam Armstrong? Obviously he's got a pretty good goal scoring record in the Championship and my guess is, Wolves will keep both Jiminez and Armstrong and that could work out well for them.

I remember seeing pics of Romeu sat with Cam Bragg at a dinner not long after he re-signed.

Totally agree. Grimes is 100% a championship player and I wouldn't want him either.

What I'm saying is ward prowse would be better than Grimes who didn't have a bad season.

Jander and Downes had the legs and  the work rate to win the ball back constantly when on form.

I don't want JWP because of his lack of pace covering the ground

Armstrong has had to give up his number nine shirt for Jiminez, which is a nice kick in the balls for him.

If we did lose THB and Charles you'd surely have to be happy with

Peretz

Bree/roeslev Stephens/quarshie Wood/new signing manning/Wellington

Fellows/Matsuki Downes/bragg Jander/Jwp Scienza/edozie

Azaz/new signing

Larin/Archer/new signing

I think any new CB would need to be a potential first choice, seen as an upgrade on JS/Wood.  But yes, that looks a squad capable of competing for top 2.

Roeslev is a player largely forgotten about. I don’t think he impressed that much when he did play, but did he even feature under Tonda ?

Perhaps unfair to judge him on displays under Still as it was such a disorganised rabble.

I wasn't suggesting the player listed first is first choice, simply one of the options but yes I agree.

Brentford fans liked him and he was injured a lot. I expect he will be adequate backup to Bree and may mean we don't have to waste tight resources on another position.

I don't think I've ever seen a chairman talk in that much detail about players like that

Just wonder if anything can be read into Dragan making these comments directly rather than leaving it to Spors.

But then again I remember he gave interviews to Adam Blackmore and Alfie House at the end of last season also, although perhaps not as emphatic as this seems to be about individual players possibly leaving.

Charles brings a different physical profile to an otherwise identikit midfield roster.

We were supposedly very close to signing Issa Doumbia from Venezia last summer - that ship has sailed: he joined Sporting Lisbon for €20m last week - so seemingly recognised the need for some height, power, and dynamism in the middle of the park.

If Charles leaves, those qualities need to be replaced.

How good was he with the bar at the normal height?

On the one hand it's so important to have a chairman who understands football, on the other you don't want them meddling too much on the football side.

I'm not overly concerned but the Edozie quote is quite interesting in the way he says "I have..." not "we have..."
