If so yet another Ankersen masterclass of deal making.

And he can redeem himself with a 33-50% sell on clause when the player joins Leeds or whoever.

Not a fan of Ankersen by any means, but not sure this is on him. Wasn’t Charles during the Shields period ? (Although may still have been negotiated by Rasmus),

Trouble is in securing the young players from City and Chelsea, the sell on is part of the deal, and they probably won’t look at selling without. It also makes the deal more affordable for us, and ‘transfers’ some of the risk involved.

Probably a case that without the sell on clause, we don’t get to see the Lavias, Charles, and Livramentos in the first place.

Possibly, the first batch from Manchester City between Shields and Ankersen.  Would imagine it was a pro forma contract at that point so we got the likes of Larios, Bazunu and Edozie too - six of that youth side in all for around £115M. With the £58M for Lavia, if Charles and Harwood-Bellis are sold we should only be about £20M down.

£115m?! Sounds way too high more like £70m surely for the 6 of them?

Of course he can. In the modern parlance though he may be considered a finisher rather than a starter. Bringing him on when all the opposition attackers are knackered is a very clever move due to his athleticism.

People forget he spent a long time last season out with a nasty injury. He was doing well before that, It was my assumption he was being managed back to full fitness before being leaned on too heavily.

In non hipster parlance, he’s a sub, who doesn’t get in the starting 11.

Or possibly he’s a very talented, highly regarded young player with a really promising future.

He returned from injury in January...

He’d have started in the final. You know, games when the manager puts out his best side….

Well,  a side to just soak up some pressure before the quality players are brought on to ensure the result. 🙂

Started 21 out of 31 league appearances last season. Think you're wrong in any parlance.

Someone did mention to me that we've been linked with Callum O'Hare again.  Not sure where the link came from and it's probably bollocks but can see that being something we might be interested in.

Nah, I'll let MLG to verify the total cost. But I'm pretty sure on average they werent £20m each!

Harwood-Bellis £20m
Charles £10m that could rise to £15m
Bazunu an initial £12m
Lavia £10.5m with £3.5m add ons and 20% sell on clause
Edozie £6m rising to up to £10m
Larios £5m-£6m

Josh Mulligan, a 5’9” midget; no thanks.  Much rather have David Ozoh from Palace: younger, taller (over 6’) and better; he did well on loan at Derby last year and I doubt that Palace regard him as good enough for the EPL yet.  If Charles looks likely to leave we should get Ozoh.

I guess that rules Messi out then at only 5’7” 😉

Exactly. Hes barely even a proven top 6 championship player at the moment. He scored a few decent goals but wasn’t in our best 11 last season. The hype around him is way above what he’s delivered so far

This is utter nonsense btw. He was quite literally a vital part of a team that just finished in the top 6 of the Championship. Barely proven ffs 😂

Football isn’t dictated by starting 11’s anymore either.

If Charles doesn’t want to sign a new contract then we have to sell him now, regardless of how good he is.

That’s the nuts and bolts of it.  He wants to leave and it’s the optimum time for the club to sell.

He doesn't want to leave. He is committed to being back, this is not a rumour this is as reported in the Belfast Telegraph after Norn Iron's last home game.

For someone so committed he is doing a very good of quite literally not committing.

We don't have a working manager just someone on the books and that won't help any player decide on staying. Those who can leave for a Premier team will as saves the risk of going for play off again. A £5m profit also helps Saints balance the books. With 8th place a route to Premier League you don't need to keep your best players, as Hull got promoted at 6th don't think they had a 'star quality ' team.

He needs to sign a contract then.  The club aren’t going to let him run his contract down.

seriously ..?..  I think 20% would be a good deal in our situation

We need to cash in on a few players with value. If that needs to be Charles then so be it.

I think hes a better player than Downes and scored some crucial goals for us, but then Downes isnt going to get us £25m+

Although I’d like to see a 6’ DM like Schneiderlin or Wanyami I wouldn’t discount Mulligan as a ‘box to box’ MF as described.

He’s the same height as Jimmy Case, one of the best enforcers we’ve had, and taller than Downes.

At 5’9 he’s also taller than Alan Ball, and Strachan (Billy Bremner was 5’5 by the way). None of these were too shabby in the midfield role.

Barry Bannan has been one of the Championship's best midfielders for years and he's 5'6.

In an ideal world I would prefer the club to cash in on half a dozen deadwood players to get us 25m.

Flynn Downes isn't as small as his Wikipedia page and other websites claim. He is not 5 foot 8! Heights of footballers on lots of websites are often nonsense.

There is no point buying a 5' 9" CM from Hibs ffs - he won't be playing for us in the prem.

Why are you writing him off due to height and his club? In 1997 would you not want Claude Makélélé to sign for Saints because he is 5 foot 9 and plays for Nantes?

It’s a bit simplistic to look at height and the team they play for only. Presume you wouldn’t have signed Kante from Caen either?
I’ve no idea whether the lad is any good or not but 5ft 9 isn’t midget territory and from what I can tell he’s quite a stocky player with a decent amount of speed and stamina.

Nor does any other team - it's the close season and they are all on holiday.

Perhaps he will when the players are back for pre-season. It's not long. He already has a contract. The Club and players are clearly on their holidays at the moment. Sheesh.
