Viking have just equalised from a penalty in their second leg Champions League qualifier against Dynamo Zagreb. Currently 3-3 on aggregate. We need Viking to lose so that they sell us Falchener and we need Dynamo Zagreb to win so that they sign Bazunu.

We’ve bid for Falchener the CB from Viking who Wrexham were after a few weeks ago

Be pleased with that from what I’ve read.

But unfortunately I fear that now this is public it probably won’t happen. He’ll end up in Italy or somewhere

Anyone saying they wouldn't have JWP back is mad, in my opinion.

Just look at the lineup announcement yesterday, everyone complaining about the CM and not having enough options etc.

Matsuki doesn't work there, Shea is gone, Jander is injured/looking to leave, downes will have suspensions.

JWP will be a solid option, great around the dressing room for the squad and despite his limitations will always put in a shift.

Im not falling for this again

Romeu was awful and JWP would be too.

Need to aim higher

SR tend to bring back a former player each season. I dread to think who'll be doing the victory lap here in a few years, though. Lyanco?

I’m undecided on how I feel about the JWP ‘news’. Probably boils mostly down to money and what it does for us in other areas. He was supposedly in £100K a week with us, and it was reported his West Ham salary was 110 or 120. If we assume a 50% relegation clause, that’s still a huge wage to sign up for someone who turns 32 before Xmas.

Also depends what sort of player he thinks he is. I remember the season he was top scorer for us with double figures; and as much as he gets called a crab, from 2018/19 his league goals per season record was 7, 5, 8, 10, 9. Granted, likely pens and free kicks in there, but to call him effectively a plodder isn’t quite right.

As I say, age and money the factors for me. If there’s a low fee and reasonable wages to be had then ok, but a fee and upwards of £60k a week even for one season is too much IMO and would likely restrict us elsewhere.

1 week to go of the UK window, going to be interesting.

I'd heard similar, and that he didn't particularly want to go at all, but was told before the season end that he'd be moved on.

I’ve heard different, or maybe not different, he may have wanted to come back but he could/would not take the wage drop and at the time still thought he had something to offer the premier league. Now after 3 seasons of getting fewer and fewer opportunities he would consider coming back, but only on loan as we cannot match his current wages. I think he is being torn apart by head and heart but I think loan this season and we could see him return next.

If JWP comes ‘home’ I’d imagine his salary won’t be ridiculous. He strikes me as someone who is fairly pragmatic and probably puts family and happiness at this stage of his career as being more important than money.

Would make some sense if a loan fee could be avoided and, even better, West Ham would pay some of his wage. Think both of those unlikely though, could probably avoid one but not both.

Dibling in a few years.

How many free kicks has he scored for West Ham?

I would judge him by how he was on when he left us. It is very realistic that we can get him to return to some kind of form when he left, particularly if he is back in his comfort zone at SMS.

Perhaps JWP will negotiate his own release from West Ham. They clearly don’t want him and presumably don’t want his wages either. He’ll need to give up some of his last year’s salary but if he wants to join us then perhaps something will give.

If he doesn’t join us, Nathan J is a big fan at Charlton

Personally, would welcome JWP coming back - I think some players just fit a club and vice versa and he is one of them.
Do not really understand the hate towards JWP - always put a decent shift in whilst here and seemed professional and didn’t act like a twat when leaving (unlike others) that have made a return “home”

Why did none of our useless players like Aribo negotiate their own release.
please go to Charlton prowsey.

Wise words right enough.

As someone said earlier, he would add quality to any team in our league. If Jander stays that would be a very strong midfield set up. JWP is also very versatile. I don’t know what the other options are but, depending on the finances, we could do a lot worse.

Nobody hates JWP. Many don't rate him or think he is what our midfield needs.

In Aribo’s case probably because he didn’t have offers and somewhere better he wanted to go to.

In the real world I don’t expect JWP to give up a years salary at West Ham. But if he really wanted to ‘come home’…

Is it not possible to declutter the transfer thread of all the JWP stuff so the rest of us can focus?

A neutral and inclusive thread title like "Doe-eyed nostalgists talking bollocks" should cover it.

Interesting how people look at things - most appearances in the Premier League for Saints and only James Beattie and MLT above him in goals.

I am also pretty sick of watching every set piece/corner in the first three games not beat the first man - pretty sure he may help in that department.

All a game of opinions though….

Sure, of course. Footballers are renowned for refusing the money they've signed up for in their watertight, legally binding contracts in favour of sentiment. I suspect his family will be happier taking the money he's due until his contract ends.

Might not even have to forfeit the money. If West Ham have to subsidise slightly it's still better business for their beancounters than paying the full whack for somebody Nuno can't get along with

Just thinking forward to a cold Sunday in February, the game locked at 1-1 at Fratton and JWP curls a free kick in from 30 yards in the 93rd minute to score his first free kick since he left Southampton the last time to send Southampton seven points clear at the top of the table...

Or forward to trailing 1 nil to Lincoln and our crab midfield options pass the ball slowly sideways and backwards continually.

Romeu was about 3 years older when he returned.

I don't know if JWP is best option we could get but he 100% would improve our squad.

Jander / Downes both had drop in form and looked tired in some games - surely JWP would be a good option.

He can also offer cover to Azaz, Bree and as wider midfield role.

If last night shows us our squad I think he probably would have been better than Bragg, Akachukwu, Fellows, Dobbin and possibly Bree on their showing, shows the limits of our squad and his versitility.

(I can't remember who he did well against as RB, Zaha?)

I have no idea on finances but would improve us.

If we can get better great but wouldn't turn him down.

I did think Louza would offer us something we lack.

I'd have JWP back even if its for 10 games, we are desperate fir some quality and experience. Even if you put him in defensive or as a striker cant be any worse that what we have. Some of our players can shoot first, 2nd or 3rd  time at least he can little ball without faffing about.

whoever comes in I hope they can good to go from the off.

CB position has become a mess and we are evidently light in the middle of the park. You also have to factor that Downes will be either injured or suspended. Jander, if he stays, has barely had a pre season and will take a few games to get up to speed

Fairly sure they will be keeping him if that stays the same.

Doubt it. Just bank the prize money, cash in on Falchener and put a sell-on clause in there and reinvest on making their team stronger for the league stage

Would he want to swap Champions League for the Championship?

JWP or not, we still need a DM or enforcer out there. JWP doesn’t tick that box.

And he isn’t a Jander replacement should he leave.

Viking aren't going to do anything in the UCL. He can play some group stage games but otherwise play Eliteserien games every week, or he can get a big payday and be playing just below the Premier League in a far better league where he has eyes on him from the start

On the basis that Downes and Jander are our first choice CMs, and will remain so after the window closes, then JWP and Bragg will be fine as back ups.

Do you think a guy that was starting premier league games last season, on huge wages, would be joining the bottom team in the championship to be "fine" as a back up player?

He'll expect to be a starter. Which would suggest to me that Jander's gone.

And he would be a limp replacement for Jander.

TBF I would hardly describe 31 as over the hill. It's not his fault that he hasn't been played as much as he'd like. I'm sure he'd have been available for every game.

It was his fault, he called baldy baldy.
