Red carding for a slap isn't much different to red cards for hair pulling

He didn’t slap him though, he vaguely and briefly pulled his pulled his shoulder/ neck with no force at all.

You’d see that incident ten times a game in a Tyro u-14s match and they’d all just get on with it.

Are the commentators and pundits really going to lie down the mic/camera...

"that was a treat from the Azteca"

No, it was an awful spectacle and anything but a 'treat'

Think that was a more personal treat to be in the Azteca than the actual game

guessing there's going to be lots of red cards in this tournament

also s.africa not making a great case for the expansion of the tournament

South Africa are one of the teams that likely would have qualified in a smaller tournament. Just wait til Uzbekistan and Curacao....

On the replay its clear his hand slaps his face. I don't think it should be a red but modern's games view of violent conduct is so low i can see why they've given the decision.

It was evident to me that after only 9 minutes into the World Cup, South Africa had studied carefully, the      'Big Russball Book of Tactics'.

Page 1 - Be Brave!

Page 2 - Playing out from the back

Page 3 - The fine art of tippy-tappy football

Page 4 - Fail and repeat

Page 5 - The End.

Middle of the Night games can't be good for the viewing figures! Well except those of us working through the night, or party animals. Or insomniacs.

30 seconds after this, still hungry, and having given the pitch-side diners a big clue, 4 of them ordered 'rice'.

Amazing win for South Korea - you guys didn't know what you missed. Classic spectacle of David vs Goliath, a real battle of talent over brawn. Well worth staying up for until 5am. Probably the best WC game of all time. Can't believe you all slept through it. 😁

Is he likely to feature/start?

I did check out their 6-0 win and he wasn't even on the team sheet ! Then I noticed it was a womens match 😁

Just read there's going to be another opening ceremony before the Canada match.

And another opening ceremony before the USA match.

Can't help but think that's a bit OTT.

You would be correct,  you could say the whole event is OTT !

South Korea looked excellent, and will be a team most won't want to play.....weaker in the air perhaps, but fit and technically decent.

And England left Maguire behind! Perfect to cause havoc at set pieces. Tuchel out 🙂

Why? There are three different nations expending large amounts of time, effort, and money to host a huge and complicated tournament.

Having only one of the three nations open the tournament would be like singing only one of the national anthems before each match.

It's the opening ceremony. The opening of the tournament, that has already opened.

Why not have an opening ceremony each time a stadium hosts it's first game? Or each time a team first plays. The individuals involved will have subject to their own costs and complicated planning.

Just my opinion. Happy to disagree. I missed last night's opening ceremony (I was watching ITV on mute during the build up, no idea if it was shown on the red button or something but they didn't seem to show much other than some flag waving just before kick off). I won't lose too much sleep if I miss the other ceremonies too.

... and it's an opportunity for the TV spectacle to help raise the profile of football in Canada and the U.S.
