Pires Anybody

Surprised he's not on strike.

Whilst I've no doubt he's an exceptional tallent, I'm not really sure he's what we need. We've got plenty of decent midfielders at the moment, all capable of getting us promoted. Plus at 36 I'm not sure Pires really has the legs to be relied upon.

That's not right, is it NickG - well not according to your Puncheon Puncheon post!.

Past it? Too old?

I bet he goes to a higher level than us and plays well. He's a damn good player and younger than Ryan Giggs.

We're in League 1 and struggling.

My thoughts exactly. Anyone who thinks a former World Cup winner, part of the "Invincibles" Arsenal side and last season playing in La Liga for one of the better sides couldnt do a job for us is mental.

He has forgotten more than Puncheon will ever know.

If there was any chance, get him in!

We are the second top side in League One on current form. There are some weirdly pessimistic people on here I know but by no definition is that struggling. Why on earth would we want to disrupt the side to bring in someone who, despite his obvious talent at his peak, is over 36 and was the type of player who relied on the asset of his pace. He has shown nothing in his career so far to suggest he would do what Paine or Ball did, for example, which was to become a different sort of player when over 30 - someone who sat in the middle and orchestrated things around him. I personally hope that our management team, are not wasting their time in even thinking of signing this irrelevance but are concentrating on getting the strongest squad the division has playing better together and in the style that the manager wants.

Pires certainly does not seem to fit the current blueprint, but worth a gamble (PAYP) as he could be an 'Alan Ball' for this young side. The guy's pedigree is world class and he's always looked after himself, just think of the positive effect on Lallana, Puncheon, and Morgan in particular!...

Actually Pires wasn't that quick really, not compared to the man he replaced (Overmars) - Pires's game was mostly about close control, which isn't as easily eroded by age. He could also pass the ball brilliantly. The idea that Pires couldn't walk into a creative role in any side in League One or the Championship and instantly be among the most dangerous players in the league is ridiculous. You only have to remember how Merson and Prosinecki played for Pompey to see how genuine class tells in the lower leagues well beyond a player's top-level sell by date.

I like French people they've got spirit as well as a certain jena se qua.

I saw him one time at Heathrow as he was walking to his gate, he seemed to to a decent job then and I'm confident he still can. Would be a great option for us, can also play all across the midfield.

He could be the touch of class we need. The big problem we have is someone to unlock the door when we play against tight defences especially at home. This guy is a world cup winner, an Arsenal legend, winner of league titles and cups and a born winner. I remember him as a player with drive and energey who passed the ball well and linked up with other players beautifully. He could also score goals.

We would be mad not to make an enquiry.

Good gate walkers are just what we want in this league.

He did a decent job walking to his gate?
