Rickie Lambert called up for England

Pleased that hes got the recognition we all know he deserves, but we also all know its a PR stunt to deflect negative attention away from Woy and the FA. Woy went on record and said Rickie is the wrong type of player for the system he wants to play. Also he wouldnt be there if Andy Carroll was fit.

I doubt he'll get on the pitch.

Is there anything that brings joy in to your life?

He has more ability than Carroll will ever have and he's there because this ability has been recognised!

I think you're misreading Alpine here. I don't think he's suggesting Andy Carroll is a better player, just that he'd be picked if he was fit - which is right. I think it's more of a dig at the Enlgish FA than Lambo himself.

It's not a PR stunt though...

I am pleased for him, and the club.

I agree with your assessment of their abilities, but its not you or I that pick the England squad.

He's there because Woy has a very small pond in which to fish for strikers at the moment.

Usually your points are worth reading, but when Lambert is involved you turn into a right arse dont you? not even a congratulations from you either, just strange.

You missed the post where I congratulated him then ?

'The9"'s views and reaction to Lambert is seriously weird for a Saints fan. Once saw him post that he was "ambivalent" towards him

I am ambivalent to all Saints players in the grand scheme of things, they're all dispensable and transient. I liked what he did in the Championship and League One. I no longer comment on his current Saints career because you just get lazy stuff like your comment, where people are unable to separate opinions about the person, the player, the international :) and the best way for Saints to progress, and just resort to having a pop at the poster.

However, I can say "he'll have to have a hell of a match against Scotland to get picked for a competitive squad", and that's not a criticism of him.

To be fair, Hodgson explicitly stated that Sturridge and Carroll would have been chosen ahead of him had they been fit, he wasn't exactly handing out platitudes other than "he worked hard to get to where he is" and you can tell by the phrases he uses that he regards him as a limited player and his perception is coloured by having first encountered him as a Bristol Rovers player knocking Fulham out of the FA Cup in 2008 (without actually scoring).

He also basically said he'd considered signing him in 2008 but he didn't think he'd be up to the Prem. And that Saints won the Championship, and that Lambert signed for a Championship side, and also seemed to think that he'd ever played in a league called the Premiership.

Has anyone seen Roy's interview on SSN? Just proves he doesn't know anything. Thought that Lambert signed for us when we were in the Championship, and then said that we won it! Clueless. Glad he's finally been selected though. Hope he gets some minutes

Well done big man, overdue and well deserved.

I for one don't think Lambert will be a flash in the pan for England, if he turns it on he will make a lot of people sit up and take notice - Woy and most of the press corps think he has called up a version of Steve Bull, what he's actually called up is a contemporary version of Teddy Sheringham - who won his last cap at 36...

I think the quotes from Hodgsen are disrespectful to Lambert, and the fact that he chose 2 crocked players proves the lack of options. He says he worked hard for this, fair enough, but where was the need to state that he only got this call up because of injuries and that he would have called the likes of Carroll and sturridge up ahead of him? Never heard that after the squad has been announced.

there are those times when a sense of genuine joy and satisfaction surpasses even the euphoria of hearing such an announcement.

I'm really pleased for Rickie's sake, (and the birth of his daughter makes it a double celebration).

Part of me says, wouldn't it be just great - if he scored against the "Old Enemy" and really stood all those media hacks on their heads....

the worse case scenario..... might be that he gets one game and then no-more.....but by then the credit will be justified and he can celebrate a career that has gone from non-League football to become the England centre forward, surely every ENGLISH footballer's dream! :adore:

(-that's if you don't count opening the batting for England at Lord's but then again that's another sportman's dream.)

Is he the oldest uncapped player to have been called up by England?

Don't have a record book to hand .....BUT I seem to recall that Leslie Compton, a central defender - and brother of the footballing-England cricketer Denis - won his first England cap at the age of 37 (?) in a post WW2 international ...????????

However, in this day and age, it says something for a man over 30 to even get a look-in an English squad for the first time.

He is defending his position thats all really, outside the Saints fishbowl it probably seems a strange one
