It's a terrible fit, he'd probably be gone by Christmas but go for it. Take the money and the Champions League games and the experience.

I always look at managers and think that as long as their last-but-one job went okay they'll always get another shot.

So Potter goes in at Chelsea and is binned, fine - he's not going to be out of work for long and he'd get a job at a club like Leicester or Palace or Saints etc no bother at all. Even if he goes to Chelsea and loses ten games in a row and is sacked before the world cup, he will bounce back.

Honestly if he turns it down he's a fucking plank. Take the money and the challenge.

Make no mistake i think it would be a terrible appointment for Chelsea but that's not the point.

Also it brings Brighton back into the bottom 6, all being well.

He can't lose. As you say, get CL experience, and they will qualify for the knock-out stages, operate at the elite level.  If it goes wrong, return back to mid-table premier league.

Oh I agree with all of that, it doesn't feel right at all. But you have to take it if you believe in yourself, the money he'll earn in a short period will set him up for life probably.

I see a lot of Brighton fans on their forum in a bit of denial. He believes in what he has there, he won't get that at Chelsea etc, the players at Chelsea aren't right for him and so on. So some think he'll stay at Brighton because of that.

He'll leave for the money and size of club, just as every manager in the history of football has ever done when presented with similar oppertunities.

Surely any manager worth their salt would back themselves to succeed with that squad.

Brighton are a well oiled machine with a very good succession at least with the players. I’m sure there is a replacement lined up for managers as well. The new man may take a while to settle but I wouldn’t be surprised if Brighton stay at least mid table.

Maybe. But they've only finished true mid table once under Potter - his previous two years they were bottom six and below us. Before that two seasons scraping up under Hughton.

So 4 out of 5 seasons in the Prem finished bottom six.

Will depend on who they get of course.

It’s been a steady improvement both in league position and players brought in. Last season saw them gain most points, most wins, fewest defeats, most away wins, highest finish.

Nothing flashy with recruitment, mainly concentrating on young talent not yet ready for the first team and either loaning them out or B team and coaching.

Maybe they got lucky with Potter but they did recognise Hughton limitations in transitioning the team from promotion, to staying up and moving up the league.

Let’s see what happens and the new man’s credentials if Potter does move on.

One of the upsides of having a bang average manager with a pretty dismal record is that big clubs do g come calling like they do with Brighton and Potter. But I wonder whether Ralph still plans to retire next year and if we have a replacement lined up. Potter after he is sacked at Chelsea ?

How about we take Tuchel s number 2 to strengthen our backroom staff? Former Assistant of Ralph at Leipzig. We are one man down with set piece specialist guy going.

Did wonder about this myself. But think he (Zsolt Low) might be more hands on than Ralph has had here previously as assistant. Does this upset the balance with Selles and the other bloke (Kitzbichler ?)

Thought Ralph would have been aim the mix for the job?

It did cross my mind how Ralph would view this. Brighton's approach supports Potter's work. Ralph has worked with buttons for a couple of seasons before this, and he has his Leipzig experience. We have played some cracking football under RalphBall. He must dream of using it with the resources of a Chelsea. Not seen as highly as Potter though.

I can see Chelsea supporters being underwhelmed by this appointment.  I expect Potter will do very well, but if he has a slow start I don't think it will take long for the supporters to turn on him.  Could be interesting.

I think he’ll need all the luck going with that lot.

Is he ready for a top 4 club? We’ll see, I’m not convinced at all but apparently niether is Jamie Carragher so more than happy to be proved wrong 😂

I’m amazed Chelsea have gone for Potter, despite the fact he’s done wonders at Brighton who I feel for because as usual just as a smaller club starts having success they get pillaged by the ‘big’ clubs and it will be interesting to see how Brighton fare without him.

I’m also slightly surprised that Potter has moved - is the money that much more important than creating something very special at a smaller club? I guess it must have been for him. I don’t think he’ll be there for too long…expectations are just too high to give him a chance to grow and develop his team/philosophy etc. But good luck to him, except when we play them.

£21m should ease the pain for Brighton.

No disrespect to Graham Potter but I don't consider him as competent a coach as Tuchel. Brighton may be going through a good patch at present but once the dust settles they are at best, mid-table. Potter will need to be getting instant results, or else. Meanwhile, Adam Lallana is temporary coach. Lucky old Brighton.

We are about to find out about Mr. Potter.

The first person I heard being asked about it on he radio was Ralph. As it's radio, I couldn't really tell if the compliments were through gritted teeth, while he held a "what about me?" sign. 🙂

They also said that Chelsea's owner is wanting to get away from hire and fire, despite having just axed Tuchel. They will be looking to emulate an identity like pep and klopp. Potter will be someone who they think can do that. They will probably not be spending such massive amounts regularly going forward, and make better use of all the talent that goes through their doors.

Seems fanciful. I know we sack a manager every 18 months or so, even if they've won the league/Champions League for us but now, with this guy, we're not going to do that any more. No siree.

They could have given the "we want an identity" and "we want to stop hire-and-fire" in a speech explaining why they are not sacking Tuchel. Pretty hollow to say it immediately after sacking someone who has been successful and that you gave several gazillion to spend a few weeks before.

If they don't finish top 4 minimum he's gone by the summer. It's not like the fans will be that bothered. I think they quite liked the Champions League winning guy, and Potter is not a big name or has any Chelsea heritage.

Chelsea fans has seen countless managers thay they really, really like be sacked in front of them. Jose. Ancelotti. Conte. Even Lampard. So why should they suck up Potter if he ain't no good. They won't.

Agreed. Potter will have to hit the ground running. There's already an undercurrent over whether he's a big enough name. If that's not happening, he's either out the door, or the new owner is going to be a lot more patient than the last.

It says a lot that Chelsea didn't knock on our door asking about Ralph.

Wasn't Potter the Ralph successor that Semmens alluded to earlier this year?

I thought that was Thomas Frank? The boat has probably sailed for both now at least until their stock falls.

Isn't Ralph 'retiring' next year?

I hope we have our own replacement nice and lined up. Suspect he may be a coach at the club at the moment...

He might find the Brighton project too good to turn down, and change his mind. Had Chelsea come calling, that might also have changed his mind on retiring. Although with their managerial turn over, his retirement date might well have been the same as getting sacked from there, anyway. 🙂

Brighton are now in transition. They've lost a lot of key figures this year, starting with Ashworth to Newcastle, Bissouma to Spurs and Cucurella to Chelsea. While, Maupay seemed to be inconsistent, he was still better than Welbeck, who's been their main striker this season and he's never hit more than 9 goals in a league season, last time he even hit that number was 2014.

The only consistency they had this season was Potter, and now he's gone along with the entire coaching team there. It's going to be a very big job to take on now, especially following their good start, expectations will be pretty high for the new man.
