Official documents (such as for example birth, marriage and death certificates prior to 1891 nearly always refer to the County of Southampton (sometimes, rarely as Southamptonshire).

As a native born and bred, I have never heard of Hampshire ever being referred to as the County of Southampton. It's been Hants on every address that I've lived at until we moved to the New Forest, when it became Hampshire.

Because VectisSaint was talking about what it was called before 1891.

We tried that around this time last year against Swansea.

It didn't work.

Is there an emoji for boring anecdotes.

There should be.

Charlie Wayman is 200 years old.

Check your facts, Matthew.

Based on assumed fitness and availability I would go for:

McCarthy

Sugawara, TBH, Wood, Taylor

Sesay, Matsuki, Fernandes

Stewart, Archer, BBD

I would look to give Stewart and Fernandes only 45 mins as think both should be considered as starters for Ipswich but they need game time.  So Downs would replace Stewart for second half.

My predicted starting 11:

Whoever needs match fitness.

I'm generally optimistic for the season, but 100% expecting a sloppy loss here.

Post-match tagline bingo:

'Wake-up call'

'Not what we're about'

'Reality check'

First time poster here :)

We live near Northampton (born and bred Southampton) and I was desperate to take my 3 boys to this to see their team live. Obviously the away tickets sold out immediately so I've taken a punt and bought tickets in the home stand (there are loads left on the Northampton website).

Can I check if anyone knows if it's going to be Saints fans in the 138-153 stands as we've booked in the stand next door? I'm currently trying to explain to my youngest why he can't wear his Saints kit!

We need to be getting Downs ready - he's better than Stewart. Agree with Sesay, Matsuki and Wood starting, thought Taylor and Harwood-Bellis might still be injured. Interesting if Brereton-Diaz plays.

Strong enough team to get the job done early and then take those in bold off on 70 minutes (Edwards for THB, Manning for Wellington, Charles for Downes and Fernandes for Downs) to protect them for the weekend.

A load of old cobblers.

They’re good enough to make the boots if not to wear them.

Don’t underestimate them but select a good enough side to get the win and rest a few key players for Ipswich; some game time for MF and DD and RS.

3:0 to Saints, with Macca commanding the box, catching the high balls (not punching them) and keeping a clean sheet.

We march on.

Well given the change was in 1891, I imagine even you aren't that old 😉 By the way it was always colloquially called Hants which predates Southampton or Hampshire. Hants is not short for Hampshire but "Hantescire" as it was called in the Domesday Book.

I don't think Aribo is part of the squad anymore, he'll be off sonnish.

I thought the use of BBD yesterday was quite telling too. We threw everyone on the pitch at the end, even Ross Stewart, but he stayed on the bench. I'm sure the club are hoping for a bid to come in for him too. One of the worst attacking players I think we've ever had, almost certainly not suited to any form of high pressing football.

Fixed it for you, one of the worst 'footballers' I have ever seen, I'd be absolutely amazed if anybody at championship level came in for him, we are lumbered.

And he is lumbering. Says everything that on a bench full of forwards, BBD is the one who doesn’t get brought on.

He wasn’t bad at Blackburn and Forest, not first loan at Blades. Russball really did finish him off. Hopefully Still can get a tune out him somehow.

Makes one wonder why Chilean fans used to worship him (not sure if they still do these days though?). Is the general standard of Chilean footballers really that low...?!

Thank god. We've played one game, the players don't need a rest.

My local non-league side will be playing Saturday Tuesday Saturday most of the season, a professional football team should absolutely be able to do it.

His replacement in the Chilean side was linked with Goztepe early summer.

I still maintain that he can’t be anywhere near as bad as we’ve seen,

Your non-league side may well be quite superb, but I doubt they play at the speed/intensity Saints 1st team plays at in the Championship. Not only that, the slower/less skilled  the opposition, the more chance of knocks and injuries to our players meaning they can get ruled out of more important league games. There’s a reason for maintaining a squad of players and providing opportunities against lower league sides is a great chance to get your lesser players going (e.g. BBD), even if only to put them in the window.

Yeah fair enough. One game in we should probably give them the next two weeks off to recover, bless them.

By the way since starting to watch non league regularly I don't notice much difference in the amount of running/pressing/intensity.

To be fair, your average professional footballer is unlikely to be doing a full-time job before heading to training/matches.....

Strictly speaking the County was called Southampton until the Local Government Act of 1891, when it was given the name Hampshire, and the Isle of Wight was made a separate County. Rumours persist that due to some oversights the name was not fully changed until 1959. Of course in 1974 Bournemouth and Christchurch were ransferred to Dorset (hence why Bournemouth are/were represented in the Hampshire Cup). Official documents (such as for example birth, marriage and death certificates prior to 1891 (and often later) nearly always refer to the County of Southampton (sometimes, rarely as Southamptonshire).

I am pretty certain that Portsmouth was once in the County of Southampton.
I remember seeing a photo of a 'proper' Pompey fan who 'hates Southampton' sat in his bedroom with an old map of Portsmouth on his bedroom wall showing 'Portsmouth in the County of Southampton'
I guess he didnt realise the irony!!

Just had a quick look at Northampton this season - beat Birmingham in pre-season 3-0, but slow start to the season with 1 draw and 1 loss (Bradford and Wigan)

Looking at their forum, from what I can work out, they have very few players available (16 senior players) so even if they wanted to rotate a bit, they won't be able to tonight.

They are pessimistic given the strength of our squad and some worry it might get ugly for them.

You'd really hope we go a few goals up and get some players some minutes from 60.

I'd like to see Matsuki get some game time as remain intrigued by him after a solid preseason, and I personally hope Downs starts and bangs in a couple to get him up and running.

I saw Saints play at Sixfields in the cup about 15 years ago. Watton played ad CB and Murton? at right back. We won.

We were there as well. Murty did indeed play as did Paul Wotton. 3-2 to us fighting off a late comeback. Freezing cold wind on the way back to our car.

Does anyone know if this is available on the SkyGo app?

I know it's on Sky Sports + (effectively the red button on sky) but not sure where those channels are on the app.

I subscribe to sports coverage on the Sky NOW app and it's showing up on there. (Somewhat unhelpfully, I've no idea if that reads across to the SkyGo app... Sorry!)

It doesn't deserve a thread of it's own but somebody above mentioned ABK in passing. Has there been any official sight or sound of him this pre-season; any video of him pretending to train? Can we palm him off to Eastleigh, or Sholing? He's certainly setting new records in the 'waste of space' category.

He was in training videos/photo galleries early in pre-season, but is now not training with the main group.

He wasn't at the media day last week, same as Dibling, so I will assume that there are zero plans to involve him. Although Aribo and Edozie were there.

It would be good in particular to see Matsuki start tonight. Both THB and Charlie Taylor to feature at somepoint too. Also for Downs, Stewart and Archer to start too and bag a few goals each. COYR 😊

On the morning of the Wrexham game he posted a photo of himself participating in a 'Park Run' type running group who were going along a road in Dusseldorf. That's all I've seen of him, that and a couple of videos of him with a German PT. Don't think he's even been in the country for a good while

Would be great to have a job that pays thousands of pounds a week where you don't even have to be in the country the company is based, don't have to attend any of the training, don't have to do any of the work, don't have to speak with any of your colleagues and it all seems to be perfectly acceptable and the money keeps rolling in as regular as clockwork. On top of all that, some other company will eventually head hunt you and give you all the above and probably more based on your current CV.

You would think it would be quite simple to include clauses in players' contracts along the lines of "barring injury, the player will attend training and at all times make himself available to play". Would make it a lot easier to terminate the contracts of these chancers.

Having said that, we really don't (and probably never will) know the full story with ABK. It might be that he actually is making himself available to play, but the club have decided that he's such a monumental bell end that they've told him to stay away for the good of the dressing room.
