Fair enough. But, if that's true then we need to replace him because his form isn't good enough at the moment.

I'd like to see how Jander does.

Its exactly what the SFC release said, Still said that he has problems with his immune system.

Seems likely that Casper Jander is going to start this game in place of Downes. Will Still talked him up in the press conference so it will be interesting to see how he performs and what influence he has on our play. I'm hoping he's going to make a real difference although it may take him a few games to really show his worth. Often one key player can transform a side and maybe he will do so for us because we need a spark to get us going particularly after Sunday's dismal spectacle.

Same. Great insight into the mindset of the players and some of them feeling like they are going to get a telling off for playing a ball forwards instead of backwards.

If he’s been truly ill and having long-term problems then that would explain his drop off in form and I feel bad for him.

Not his fault and I hope he’s ok.

A drop off in form would be explainable, a drop off in effort and commitment is not explainable.

Yeah, seems hard to believe and indicates that some of our players are not performing with the freedom required. How can you be afraid to play a forward pass! Maybe some of them need therapy rather than coaching.

I think that's a bit unfair, I've not seen any drop off in effort or commitment from him. Reports of him having an underlying condition would fit with what we are seeing.

Modern pros maintain at peak condition, it doesn't take much to knock them off that.

I think he is a valuable player to us, but clearly a bit out of sorts atm. Part of that is playing in a different system. I'm sure given time and decent coaching, he'll adapt his game. However for the moment he needs to get well.

Fortunately Janger and Aribo can cover. Then he'll need to fight for his place.

Is Aribo coming back into the squad? I’m not his biggest fan, he blows too hot and cold for me, but I did think he would have been good to have on the pitch against Pompey.

Is Still not aware that most teams in this league will be looking to make the games as scrappy as possible. Staggering naive to be going in with i hope opposition will be totally stupid and indulge him.

Well if we're paying his wages he should be available for selection although it's up to Will Still to decide whether he merits a place in the squad. I'd say he does because from what we've seen so far it's a low bar.

Hull did try to play last time we came up against them, in fairness. Hopefully they do the same again (no idea if they have the same manager nowadays)

They destroyed us at St Mary’s,  most of the players and manager have changed since then though

On the evidence of last week's match, he's made excellent progress. Nearly all our forward passes went to opposition players dressed in blue and white.

Prediction? 0-0 again

They blew their load trying to get the play-offs and finished 7th. They're definitely relegation contenders, we really have to win games like this. Tomorrow will tell us whether we're a promotion candidate or destined for mid-table this season.

I should hope so, Saints are paying him enough. Agree he is a decent sub off the bench, if he gets his chance then it is down to him to claim a place. Although probably considering a move to Saudi, if that window is still open.

More excuses

Can we transfer to a darts league. Surely they could hit that target. Would have to do fitness training and no injuries unless they drop a pint or large kebab on thier foot.

Why was he on screen showing as sub coming on during Pompey game.

Shuts on Tuesday, so still time for Saudi clubs to splash the cash.

Seemed alright hoofing it aimlessly up to Archer in the first half last week! That worked well.

I said this in the Watford game, oh and last week, so this time it really will. 😉

That was amusing, I’d forgotten about that. The screen and announcer read out Joe Aribo coming on, and then a big lanky white man in Ross Stewart runs on the pitch instead.

Well we need a result tomorrow as Boro are looking very good and will be a real challenge next week

Need to get away from, 'we must win this game'. It just puts added pressure on everybody, and I'm one of the worst for doing it.

The aim is to win obviously, but there are other things to look out for.

Another solid defensive performance is a must. That's how promotion campaigns are built.

Evidence that the new signings are acclimatising and making an impact.

We need to see the ball move forwards, and quickly through the midfield. A midfield of Azaz, Charles, and Janger, really should be bossing every game.

That is pretty much what Still has been saying. I guess if those areas improve, the wins will come.

Torrential rain forecast across the north of England today, with a yellow warning of possible flooding (although Hull is just outside the warning area according to the Met office).

I reckon there's a strong chance this could be postponed.

Good stuff. Gives the players more time to gel on the training ground.

ronnie Pickering been disrespecting my Gs and we is gonna bust open his blud clot so he’s gone into bare lock down as he’s a pussy clot

You get me cus?

I’m about 60 miles from Hull and the weather is absolutely horrendous. Rain has eased off for a bit but up until about 8.30 it was torrential. Safe travels for those heading up, not going to be a nice drive

If Casper makes an appearance, let’s hope he shows more spirit than his frightfully inept predecessor.

potentially today, the front 6, and therefore the majority of the eleven, will have little or no experience of the Martin way of playing.
Shea Charles was out on loan last season, Fraser was seemingly ostracized for the majority of the season, and Stewart was quarantined in the treatment room.
Jander, Fellows and Aziz, along with the RB as well, all newbies.

When did Russball ever involve hoofing? He also wasn't alright about it, if you saw his post match interviews, laid the blame squarely at the players and sorted it out (largely) at half time.

The "Russball" reference shit needs to stop.

Still is the third manager since Russ.

On top of that, it's not as though our players have all been schooled in "Russball" throughout their career. We had Russball for a grand total of 1.5 seasons.

The notion that they are so broken by this that they aren’t capable of implementing a different game is idiotic. It is an excuse and it betrays a communication and coaching failure from the current regime.

An average of a point a game is acceptable if trying to cling on in the Prem League. It's totally unacceptable if the plan is to finish in the top two. The complacency needs to end with the last vestiges of that Russball losing mentality exorcised from now on. No more excuses. Points at this stage of the season have same value as those at the end when the final tally is counted. A win is required today.
