No goals at Watford, 6 at Preston (although someone on here said his xG was good so either he’s not getting in positions to score or Preston don’t create any chances). I mentioned his xG recently and wouldn’t say it’s great but at Preston he scored roughly equivalent to what was expected which isn’t too bad in a side that didn’t actually create much. I was only making the point when comparing him against Azon though who is the complete opposite and scores roughly half the amount of goals he should be getting and last season missed more big chances than anyone else in the division. I can’t see us going big on someone like Vipotnik so I think whoever we do sign is going to be a big gamble.
kjurwi Posted 12 hours ago Posted 12 hours ago I was so fudging angry after the ending of last season, so i had to calm down a bit. Starting to come back now. Is Dobbins the only new player this summer? Not counting players on loan last season.

I was just thinking that if six goals is “par” for Jebbison last season then either Preston created a ridiculously low number of chances for him or he wasn’t in positions to score. Azon, by contrast, seems to have had plenty of chances but was a poor finisher. Now, clearly Ipswich were a better side than Preston, so maybe that’s to be expected but I thought I’d read somewhere that Ipswich fans thought his movement and positioning were great but that his finishing needed improvement. That’s why I was more excited by Azon than I am by Jebbison. Agree every striker that we could get is a gamble but, if we are going for Autos, I’d be surprised if the best we can do is a striker like Jebbison who, whilst still very young, has quite a poor record of scoring goals at this level.

We got promoted three years ago with 5'10" Che Adams leading the line and Sekou Mara as backup. In the worst case scenario Larin as a focal point with BBD as backup is at least equal, I would say better. Especially with goals to be expected from Azaz, Dobbin and Scienza. This squad is comfortably good enough for automatic promotion, our only problem would be if someone like Leo or THB was sold, or both Charles and Jander. 1
gio1saints Posted 11 hours ago Posted 11 hours ago Complacency. Saints were not good enough for automatic last year and start on minus four this year with much stronger new competitor opponents in wolves and West Ham especially. My expectation is another tough long season in which we struggle but make play offs. Then we should be favourites. The sense of injustice that we hope may inspire the players every match is going to be useful but most of all at the end of the season in crunch matches. Inbetween I reckon many teams will use the result v us as a benchmark - and raise their game - they know we could have been in EPL instead of Hull. Not one easy game this year starting with Colchester. 4

We have the same team that finished last season currently. Ergo we are good enough for autos. Any sales from here on out may alter that, and yes the League is stronger, but we're still in good shape. Currently.

I think you’re underestimating the quality of the teams that came down. Leeds and Leicester were decent but West Ham with Bowen and £100m of transfer fees to strengthen and Wolves with Jiminez who was causing high class opposition problems at the WC is a different gravy. If we really expect to keep up with them, when we are already 4 points behind, with Larin as a starter and BBD backing him up then we are going to be disappointed. My view is we need a starting quality striker to rotate with Larin to have a realistic shot of dislodging either WH or Wolves. 14

Not one easy game this year starting with Colchester. Selective noise. For the last 25 games we won the league, 1 point more than Cov I belive (67-66). This clearly indicates the potential to win this league. As always players in/players out will have a major say. So far, we are winning in my opinion, although a striker is necessary. Charles going and being replaced is needed but not as key as Bragg is a better player. As it stands we will certainly be top 4. With a decent striker we may well win the league regardless of the relegated teams persona.

Last season Preston created the third fewest chances in the championship and Ipswich the third highest. Jebbison had played slightly more minutes but not by much and scored one more goal than Azon. So if you’re worried about goals then Azon isn’t your man. By all accounts he’s a pest, can press, link up play and that kind of thing so if you’re looking for a Che Adams type but with less goal output then Azon may well float your boat, Not saying Jebbison is amazing or will be a success but probably more likely to get goals than Azon. Swaythling Saint Posted 9 hours ago Posted 9 hours ago Still hoping for Salech as I think would link well with Dobbin/Azaz and play off Larin, but realistically think Jebbison on loan with an option.
BARCELONASAINT Posted 9 hours ago Posted 9 hours ago I have no doubt we will be bringing in another striker to rotate with Larin and imho it is imperative we get the signing 100% correct, there really is no room for error here. Larin exceeded all expectations and i love the guy but can we expect him to have the same impact this season? I certainly hope so but he will need help. Apart from Larin i cannot say any of our current crop of strikers makes me feel confident that we will find the goals to compete with Wolves, West Ham and Borough who i thought looked decent last night and their new striker looked like he will score goals for them this season. 1
goodymatt Posted 9 hours ago Posted 9 hours ago We should have pushed the boat out for Lankshear, add ons make the deal look expensive but the initial fee was reasonable. If Boro end up paying those add ons then they will be a PL team. Like with Delap, one we tracked and tried to do but didn’t get over the line. Our links to Azon and Jebbison are underwhelming and you’d be left hoping for a Larin style exceeding expectation. 2

Saint_lambden Posted 9 hours ago Posted 9 hours ago Malick Yalcouye at Brighton. Was on loan at Swansea last season, central midfielder. HCDAJFU as a Charles replacement.

The team we started out with was quite different a few matches later.

BBD definitely gave a David Speedie-type ‘I don’t want to be here’ display today. He’s off surely. One permanent striker and one loan, possibly one or both contingent on either Archer going to WBA or someone, somewhere thinking Damian Downs could do a job for them (banger racing driver?). Cameron looked lively and keen when he came on so I’m guessing its Downs they want to shift plus BBD if Eustace still wants him, or unless he’s waiting for Derby’s Saudi investment to go for better. 1
SNSUN Posted 2 hours ago Posted 2 hours ago 4 hours ago, trousers said: Signing another decent striker is critical to our season Yep. Even if we kept Archer I'd only want him as the third choice he was last season. We need Larin competition. Not a "second" striker behind Larin, someone as good or better than Larin. Make them work for the spot. I don't know who'd be 3rd choice if Archer left though, unless Downs doesn't have any suitors. We need 3 strikers over a 46 game season plus cups (not including the youth). 3
