Saints vs Newcastle Build Up Thread

Was a decent win for them to give a bit of confidence, might end up working against us.

Indeed.I was hoping for a suspension or two, along with an injury to someone like Shelvy who always seems to score against us. Unfortunately the only injury he might have sustained the other night is a splinter in his ar$e from sitting on the bench at West Brom. Unlikely to keep him out on Saturday though.

They’ll be set up defensively but have attacking weapons which is why it’s puzzling they struggle to score goals in the league. I’d like to get one over on a Bruce team.

McCarthy, KWP, Stephens, Bednarek, Bertrand, JWP, Hojbjerg, Djenepo, Boufal, Long, Ings.

JWP back in midfield please. I’ll take any kind of victory.

With no Armstrong we really need Djenepo playing if possible. If not we'll have to rely on Boufal. Either way, JWP vital back in midfield as they'll try and pack the centre of the pitch.

Any of our **** keepers, doesn't matter

Bednarek Vestergaard Stephens

Valery JWP Højbjerg Bertrand

Long Ings Djenepo

We wont be returning to 5 at the back, not with the success Ralph has had with 4-4-2 and 4-2-2-2 and definitely not at home to Newcastle. KWP in at right back, JWP back in the middle alongside PEH. Djenepo in for Armstrong. Simples

I'm hoping that we manage to turn things around this week, but Armstrong will be a big loss IMO. I want players to play in their best positions, but I'm not sure about playing both Boufal and Djenepo. If we don't do that, it would mean either playing Adams, or one of the full backs in a more attacking role, such as Valery or Vokins, or playing JWP further forward with Romeu coming into CM.

It makes you realise how important JWP has become this season if you think we could really do with three of him tomorrow: RB, DM and replacement for Armstrong.

I think KWP must start (or just possibly Valery, but doubt it). Then it's a toss-up between starting Boufal and Djenepo which could equally well be exciting or a disjointed flop, or put JWP alongside Djenepo with Romeu at DM. Shame Smallbone is out, or I'd have gone for the second option with Smallbone instead of Romeu.

But I still wonder if Ralph try something different, such as Adams as #10.

What the hell were our medical staff doing last week? Concussion this bad a week later YET he played the full 90 minutes?! Ridiculous. Explains his performance last week though.

Symptoms of concussion can be delayed onset. Unfortunately it appears that's what happened with Armstrong as he'll have gone through the concussion protocol after a knock to the head.

It's one of the cracks in the concussion protocol, as a second knock to the head for Armstrong would have been very dangerous, but the alternative is that any player that gets any knock to the head is required to be subbed, regardless of whether they appear to be fine.

Protocol/guidelines say a player should not return for at least 6 days following a suspected concussion, so likely that Stu would not have been available tomorrow whatever the seriousness. The question that should be asked though is why was he allowed to carry on playing last Saturday. Did he actually leave the pitch to be assessed by a doctor? I haven't seen the incident so just asking.

Hopefully Ralph has brought in Harry Potter on loan, but yeah typical sort of player that will get a goal against us.

With Armstrong, Redmond out Boufal and Djenepo plays out wide. If Djenepo can't play JWP will play RM, Höjbjerg and Romeu CM and Boufal LM.

I would've liked to se a 3-5-2 With Boufal behind Long and Ings at the top.

..................McCarthy..................

......Danso. Stephens. Bednarek....

KWP......JWP...Höjbjerg....Bertrand

Have u not watched us play this system!!!!!! Have u not seen how poor danso is and how lightweight kwp is, we dont need to pi** around with the ball at the back for 90 min, let them have 60% of the ball then bring them on to us then press then and play through the channels like we did against Villa and Spurs at home

If we did go three at the back, which we won't, it would be Vestergaard, not Danso.

Pretty sure Djenepo will start and we need KWP at RB. The question is whether to put JWP in his normal position with Hojbjerg and Boufal or someone else (Adams?) with Djenepo, or bring in Romeu and push JWP forwards to replace Armstrong.

Agree with all of this. We have to keep a four at the back and play on the front foot like we did against Villa in the last home match. It will be interesting to see what Ralph does with the 2 number 10s. With Armstrong unfortunately missing today, it could well be Prowsey pushed up and Romeu bought back in alongside Pierre. I hope Boufal starts as one of the 10s. Be good to see Moussa too, hope everyone gets behind him today and supports him after what hes just gone through. KWP to start at RB for me also. 2-0 to us today - Ings and Boufal COYR :)

Driving down from the W Midlands for this, I have a spare Blk 15 Chapel (over 65, but doubt that will matter). Free to a good home. Will meet at ground, leave mobile number if interested, I will phone you.

Get your cash on Shelvey anytime. 4/1 via Coral which I don’t think is too bad! Without Armstrong and Redmond it could be a tough afternoon for Ings.

If we don’t man mark Shelvey he will of course destroy us. Hopefully previous lessons have been learned!!!!

Very strange Valery starts. Two weeks ago we were told although he’d been back 3 weeks and played for the u23s earlier this week he wasn’t match fit to start. He’s not played at all since then but is now match fit enough to start.

I think it's the right decision to play a specialist RB and will be good to have JWP back in midfield. Valery situation is odd though.

Hope Boufal can show a bit more today, and a Djenepo goal would be good to see after his last couple of weeks.

So we do have Boufal and Djenepo both playing, with Valery at RB and Ward Prowse in midfield. Ralph has gone for players in their natural positions! 3 defenders and no wide players on the bench, though, which indicates there's not anyone else who's rated very highly by the management in the U23s, I'd say.

Thats because Ralph has seen KWP isnt very good

Decent team IMO, probably the best from the players fit.

Yep, more optimistic about this line up than I was for last week’s against West Ham. Valery over KWP we can only think he’s impressed in training but again better to develop one of our own.

Ings to score today, I can feel it.

Maybe, although it’s very confusing how Valery has suddenly become match fit without playing any matches. Several posters on here were absolutely adamant that was the reason Ward Prowse had been playing there ahead of the other two recently

Boufal starting, I used to get enthusiastic when he started a game but now not so much, I think the expression is 'he flatters to deceive'.

He has talent though, I’m secretly hoping he signs a new contract in the summer and stays, the tears the league up next season. He still has his bets years in front of him. However I do think, with one year of contract left and him largely been a bench player this season, he’ll be sold.

Still, we might get a good performance or two out of him before then, maybe today. Redmond and Armstrong and safer hands in the wide positions but Djenepo and Boufal are the X Factors. Should certainly make exciting viewing for the spectators.

All very strange.

Can only assume KwP will need 2 months to build up his fitness after a few weeks out.

Good line up though. And they are playing a more attacking set up. Should be good

Why? Just how little does this guy have to do, before some people will accept he's not a Premier League player? He's not done anything of note in a game he has started, since that goal against Boro in 2016. A few fleeting glimpses of talent as a sub, in other words when defenders have been running around for 70 minutes and he has an unfair advantage, are about it.
