Matthew Le God Posted 19 March, 2013 Share Posted 19 March, 2013 He has already agreed to sign a deal with Saints this summer, so won't be joining Tottenham. As for the article suggesting Saints would find it hard to turn down a £15m bid with £8m upfront, signing Ramirez for £12m and spending over £35m this season shows the intent of the club and lack of need to sell its youngsters anymore. Saint Charlie Posted 19 March, 2013 Share Posted 19 March, 2013 Other teams know how good he is and can be. You tell them that we know how good he is and that in a couple of years time he will be worth 20m plus and therefore thats his price. If the club asking about him don't like it then bothered, he is our player. Im sure Cortese sees it like this and I have total faith he will bat away suitors. Saint_Ash Posted 19 March, 2013 Share Posted 19 March, 2013 If he has indeed signed a pre-contract agreement then yes, it's legally binding. At 17 Shaw is classed as a minor meaning under contract law he isn't classed as competent For the contract to be legally binding, when he turns 18 he's classed as an adult and any contract he signs becomes valid. The club's offer of a contract to Shaw is however legally binding. So until he signs that proper contract he can still decide to go elsewhere. SNSUN Posted 19 March, 2013 Share Posted 19 March, 2013 Spurs are after him as a ready made replacement for Bale. Well they can knob off. As can the others. Yes I can see big clubs wanting him, and perhaps his head will turn, but we'll really challenge next season if we stay up and reinforce. We're where we are in the League table this year because it took us a while to find our feet in the division, new players hadn't bedded, we missed players like Cork, and we had to wait a while to find a decent Keeper and Left back. We now have both - and with even more reinforcements in the summer, I fail to see why we can't be a challenging top 8 side next season. But that would mean keeping our youngsters like Shaw. How much money would tempt Cortese? Hopefully none. There are perhaps one or two crown jewels we could afford to sell if we had to, Ramirez for one, (perhaps even Lambert and Cork if the money was ridiculous) and find good or better replacements for, but players like Shaw, Clyne, Morgan and Adam are who we should be building the team around. Incidentally, I was going to post this on a seperate thread but as Shaw has this one, could you see us converting Shaw into a winger as Spurs did with Bale? Granted he's more valuable to us as a left back, but with his attacking play and crossing, I could see it happen as an option.
saints_is_the_south Posted 19 March, 2013 Share Posted 19 March, 2013 The club has a clear philosophy to build a young team of predominantly English players that is capable of competing in the top half of the Premier League. We bought the likes of Clyne, Rodriguez and Ramirez in the summer for a reason, and have extended Schneiderlin and Lallana's contracts on long term basis for the same reason. We will not be selling Shaw any time soon, unless someone comes along and offers silly money, in excess of £20m. Cortese will be well aware that he will be worth more than that by the time he reaches his 20's too.
Lallana's Left Peg Posted 19 March, 2013 Share Posted 19 March, 2013 Make no mistake, Shaw has been known by the big clubs for a few years. The media linking him to clubs now is just based on their visibility of him rather than any club going 'This Shaw kid looks good, who is he?'. I was sat next to a scout at the Youth Cup tie at Bolton last season (I think the scout was from Arsenal but he wasn't wearing any official club gear) and all he was doing was making notes on Shaw. Shaw himself cruised through the game like he was playing a computer game on easy level. He didn't particularly stand out but everything was easy for him. There was one moment when a winger shoved the ball past him and steal a few yards as well but Shaw still got back to the ball before him and with some time to spare too. In the car park after the game there were a good two dozen Range Rovers, I'm assuming scouts and agents checking up on talent and many of them there for Shaw. To be honest I think more than any affinity for the club or Manager, it's Cortese who has convinced him about where we're going and what part he can play in it. Andre Posted 19 March, 2013 Share Posted 19 March, 2013 He won't go this summer. I don't for one minute believe he'll spend his whole career with us, although I hope to the non-existent gods that he does.
Red Posted 19 March, 2013 Share Posted 19 March, 2013 Isn't Targett supposed to be almost as good and a similar age? If so, get him playing once we are safe (hopefully that will be with a few games left), and if he proves his potential, then sell Shaw for £20M and get a super quick goal scoring machine in :-) ..... oh and yes, slightly (but only slightly) tongue in cheek! I don't for one minute believe he'll spend his whole career with us, although I hope to the non-existent gods that he does. I think having seen Bale, Walcott and AOC leave before their Saints careers barely began, fans just want to see 3 - 4 good years and then a proper fee reflecting the valie of the player. With Cortese in charge we are more likely to get that.
saintbob40 Posted 20 March, 2013 Share Posted 20 March, 2013 An oral agreement to agree....hmmmmmm....Dan Gosling at Everton anyone? The danger for Shaw is that if he does go to a big club he could end up playing 10 games a season rather than 40 and his development will be stunted if he doesn't play. JWP sitting on the bench every week is not particularly helpful to him either and he should probably get out on loan.

(Maybe I remember incorrectly - can anybody confirm?) Perhaps we could see a similar deal - - - Shaw goes to Chelski and Cole comes here with part of his salary still paid by Chelski?
