J Rod...

He is actually being used as a striker. It helps to play him to his strengths!!

Totally agree. It was so unfair to give the player his first taste of Premier League football by asking him to play out wide on the left where, lets be honest, he looked average at best. All MP has done is play him as a striker, bigged up his confidence and look how much he has improved in just the last 2-3 months never mind since August.

I wonder how shamefaced a lot of posters would be after reading the thread about the 7m waste of money thread that was on here a few months ago. I do hope JRod did not read that garbage at the time.

Again is don't think anyone did say that. It was more about the size of the fee and like with Ramirez, Maykua and Forren could that money have been better spent elsewhere. Anyway, its boring arguement, great to see Rodriguez playing so well, scoring regularly and looking like a player of real ability.

I think that NA was afraid to alter the status quo in August ...and play him upfront. JayRod looked lost when out out on the left wing.

NOW ..give him a more striking role he's a success .....AND Rickie looks just as dangerous playing wider........

good solution alround.

it seems to me that the new manager has a better understanding of how a player is suited.Morgan has become a better player IMO as he now is making fantastic attacking runs

That surging run down the left in the 2nd half, and the way he chipped Terry set him apart today. What a revelation, powerful, quick, composed on the ball. Could do with looking up a bit more and feeding the wide players with those runs.

IMO, he's always had the talent and ability, he's shown signs of that since day one in the Prem, but he's now using that properly and making better decisions. He's reading the game better and looks a more experienced player.

That, plus we're not trying to use him as a winger!

really has taken a step up under MP and is now brimming with confidence and taking on defenders with the belief he can beat them. worth noting that most of his goals are not just tap ins but really skillful finishes. hopes he continues to improve and become a key player next season (probably already is one this second half of the season)

Credit where credit is due Nigel always had faith in him and playing him on the wing was not really the issue. He played there very effectively for Burnley. He was starting to come good under Nigel those last few games. The big difference under MP is that he is given freedom to express himself. One minute you see him as a centre forward and the next he is hugging the sideline. Same goes for lambo and puncheon who swaps sides much more than under Nigel. Reading the tweets and os it is clear the players a really looking forward to next weeks game. I think a few have a point to make!

He now looks a future England player. The way he can dribble with the ball.

Future? I'd have him in now.

Normally I wouldn't be saying that but right now we're talking about Carroll, Sturridge and Welbeck walking into the squad with 1 decent performance each month.

Is he?

Rickie Lambert also played as a striker today. That being so, who played wide left for us?

JRod is playing a fairly similar position to that he started the season in. We didn't play 4-4-2 today.

Just a bit of confidence to do what's asked of him really...

He's getting a lot better on the wings where he should be most the time and when he is bursting into the box from half a mile out no defence/midfield seem to know what to do with him which is hilarious! Just needs to spend more time on his finishing and he'll be the next on a long list of our players linked with the "big 6"

What has the Pochmeister done to turn him from an ineffective, Championship looking striker to being the player he is now? Unrecognisable to what he looked like under Adkins. Big credit to Poch and Rodriguez for turning it round...

He hasn't really done anything. Like your posts about our first 8 games of this season, you have incorrectly identified that he was doing something wrong and has changed it. He was doing plenty right under Adkins too, and the world and his dog knew we'd signed him to improve and develop and he'd probably get better by the end of the season if we kept picking him.

It's like saying Spurs turned Bale into a world class player, when he was making 50 yard dribbles and pinging in free-kicks for Saints in the Championship. As indeed Rodriguez was scoring for fun for Burnley, come to think of it.

He started the first game of the season up-front.

Rickie is still being picked as the central striker - with J-Rod left and AL right; it's just that they all seem to inter-change more under MP than they did under NA.

No he didn't. He played wide left. Guly played through the middle.

Well I can see a clear difference in the way he is playing over the last 3 or 4 games than in his last 3 or 4 under Adkins even if you can't.

So he did, my mistake; for some reason had it in my head that he was central with Guly in the AM role.

Anyway, my second point still stands. We are not playing 4-4-2 and nor is Rickie being picked as the wide left player.

I did not realise he had that pace until recently. Just needs to strenghten his shots and he will be a complete player. Time very much on his side.

I'd say he has to do a bit more than that before he's a complete player. The improvement in him since the start of the season has been impressive but he still has a long way to develop yet. He needs to find composure; he is able to make opportunities for himself but is prone to either making the wrong decision or making a mistake and losing the opportunity he has just created. For example yesterday; he showed a brilliant bit of skill to lift it over John Terry and make him look a complete mug, but took a really heavy touch after that and lost it to Cech.

We've moved to a more flexible formation with players given the freedom to move around. When we didn't have the ball Rodriguez was on the left wing with Lambert waiting on the half way line. When Boruc was taking a goal kick or a free kick from an offside Lambert would go to the wing to take advantage of Bertrand or Azpilicueta's lack of experience and J-Rod would take a position in the middle in front of the centre backs.

Lambert wouldn't have won as many headers against Ivanovic and Terry, but both got exposed by Rodriguez's pace. Clearly a lesson learned from the QPR game where Samba won every header with Lambert staying in the centre.

The understanding that has grown between Lambert and Rodriguez and presumably the trust that the manager has in them to take up the right positions benefits them both.

Agree entirely. There is much more fluidity about where our forward players are playing than simply saying "on the wing" or "up front". Steven Davis's role is also interesting, particularly when we don't have possession... snapping at the centre backs while lambert and jayrod take up deeper and wider positions. Great to have players that are comfortable playing more dynamically.
