Loaning academy players out for "work experience". Not heard of that happening before. Is this a new initiative or have I just been blissfully ignorant over the years...?

Have to say I haven't heard of it either but they all played today in a 3-0 win.

Good experience playing against men as they are all 16.

I don’t know when it started, but we certainly did it last season too.  I believe the lads train with Saints in the week and play with their loan teams at the weekends.

Wonder what's behind this.
Dont think he was getting a game at Port Vale which doesnt bode well

He was used as a striker in some games apparently and has been playing in our  team games recently. Considering the fuss when he joined us from Everton, things don't seem to have developed too well, though it is worth remembering that he is only just 18.

Maybe Jones wants to have a look at him, or maybe Larios's injury is worse than first thought?

We can always loan him out again in January if stuff fixes itself. Clearly the club aren't thinking he's progressing as expected there.

I wouldn't have thought it was Jones related given he has been playing in our B team a couple of times while still on loan at Vale. Can we cancel Smallbone's loan at Stoke as well?

Good lad. Nice show of faith from the club after he'd just suffered a serious knee injury with his contract almost up. We're pretty decent with that kind of thing.

Fingers crossed for a full recovery and pushing for a place in the team next season.

I know we have all - most of us, anyway - agreed that we are using too many young lads and need some experience to be added ....but I'm wondering if NJ will have the opportunity over the world cup period to check out the young forwards who are doing so well at that level. If we are playing any friendlies around here or even in Florida, it would be good to give them a chance to showcase their ability. I know January is coming and we are likely targeting new signings, but what if we have some rough diamonds in the U21 setup that could save us millions in signing fees and wages.

We have 5 B Team games scheduled between now and the end of the WC, why not just watch them, especially if we use them to give our first team players a run out.

I agree with him. It's obvious that he meant to see how they perform in something like a first team environment. We know how they perform for the B team, hence wanting to see how they get on in first team games when there's less on the line.

But if you play them in with first teamers (lets be clear here we could field our first team while still keeping to the rules) it will give a good idea of how they perform alongside the "established" players. The only down side is the quality of the opposition, we saw that against Boro, and most of the games coming up are PL Cup, which is against even lower quality opposition (e.g. Colchester).

Jake Vokins back at Southampton, loan at Woking cancelled.

Not surprised. He spent most of his time on their bench. It's hard to see where his career will go now. He looked really promising as a youngster.

Was a weird move anyway. Held his own in the SPL last season, and then was loaned out to non league. Something's not right there.

Jones just said, when asked about Ely's contract, that "he's been excellent for me and I hope he's at the football club for much longer".

New contract coming...

He was the best Norwegian on the pitch on Tuesday!

It was always assumed that Hasenhuttl was a genius at developing young players and getting the best from them although in retrospect there is little evidence of his success at doing so.

Ely always showed glimpses of talent but until recently never got the chance to settle in the team and prove his worth. Now he seems to improve with every game. He was always good off the ball and now his on the ball skills are beginning to have an impact on team performance.

Although he had only a cameo role in the defeat of Man City, he seemed able to ghost past players in midfield to set up attacks with ease. There is more to this man than meets the eye and it may be that Jonesey (;-) ) might just have the knack of finding the switch that sets this guy free. I am not only not surprised that Ely might be offered a new contract but am personally delighted.

With 9? first team players in the u21 category, this means we now have 32 players in the first team squad, though that does include Lancashire and Vokins. Going to be quite a clear out in the Summer, whether we stay up or not, I would imagine. Pathway to the first team for our Academy players is currently blocked big time.

Is there any possibility that the reason we keep playing the useless Janny B is because he has something weird in his contract like 'must play when fit' or is that always balls? I'm struggling to think of any possible reason why Selles likes him, and wonder if that was a condition of his recall from Villa. If he plays any more I think that a) we are definitely down and b) there is way too much control of players beyond the manager, which always means trouble

For me, we need to install Caleta Car in as the first name in the defence, alongside Bella-Kotchap, with Perraud and KWP. That's a decent defence. Build from that. Can't see any way we can avoid leaking goals like a sieve without it. Maybe even get Willy in in goal for a bit as Bazanu's confidence must be all over the place.
