I think we were looking at the possibility in the summer, but we couldn't shift Aribo and/or Downes.

Now Charles is out injured long term there is a huge gap in CM, so we've moved I reckon. Not sure there is anything in this manager wise.

I think those stories came about because Romeu visited the team on a training camp in Girona.

But, there's maybe nothing in it, as u say. It's interesting though

One part of me thinks it’s a win win signing, another part of me, the cynical side, thinks it’s very convenient how this has all come about after the toxic atmosphere on Saturday.

The interview was filmed at St Marys by club staff. Wa released on YouTube 4 days ago. Will have taken a day to shoot and a day to edit; so they've known he was coming for 6 days at least.

He was seen at Staplewood before the pre-season team meet up in Spain

Lamine Yamal has praised Oriol Romeu by citing his strength and robustness as qualities he looks up to. Yamal has described his ideal player by including Romeu for strength, in addition to other players for different attributes like speed, passing, and finishing.
  • Physical strength: Yamal identifies Oriol Romeu as the player he looks to for "strength, robustness and resilience".
  • Part of an ideal player composite: When describing an ideal player by combining the strengths of multiple professionals, Yamal explicitly lists Oriol Romeu for his strength.

At last a bit of physical strength.

This is true, but they will make more with Saints as their supposed primary club re-established in the PL. That will require far more of a vision than they’ve had so far. The money to buy players to establish ready for WP qualification via Goztepe and a revitalised Valenciennes won’t be there otherwise. Nor will they be able to attract the Lavias and Fernandes types that turn over the most with Saints stranded in Champ or League 1.

Over to you SR.

Oh dear.

Brilliant news! Welcome back Oriol. Now go kick some of those weak asses in the dressing room.

I guess we’ll find out eventually, but I’m wondering a little why Oriol has had two months without a club. Various reasons why it could be, but a bit strange that at only 34 he was seemingly unable to find another side before now.

We sounded him out in the summer but couldn't shift Aribo and Edozie to make space in the wage budget for him to join us > that budget matters less right now.

He really wanted to return and if not to us perhaps would retire. Just my theory but it might be accurate.

I think I read he's been playing for a Portuguese club to stay fit

His first task should be to chin a few of our Nancys for disrespecting the club so badly.

Not a faIr fight. Romeu's hair isn't long enough for Cap'n Shoehorn to pull.

I've been thinking about the Return of Romeu and maybe I am reading more into this because of my love for the club and optimism that we can turn a corner.

Hopefully, this move is more than just a desperate act from SR and is an acknowledgement that a successful club needs more than just a few talented youngsters, identified by stats, with potential but little experience.  I hope that it is a sign that SR has finally recognised that you need some old, been there, done that, leaders on the pitch. A recognition that we need those types, not just to marshal the troops on the pitch and pick heads up when things go awry, but to set an example off the pitch on how to train, how to keep fit and generally how to conduct oneself as a sportsman and as a club representative.  This is much about CHARACTER for me, as it is about playing ability.

I hope that, rather than Romeu being a one-off to get us out of a hole, there are more leaders on the way through the spine of the team. Men who will rally the team on and off the pitch. Fingers crossed.

Agree with the above from @lambtiss.

Sadly, I don’t think that’ll be the case.

To sack the manager and then practically 48 hours later bring in a former fan favourite who is seen as a leader is a little sus in itself.
It could be that it’s been in the pipeline for weeks but personally I don’t buy it, it’s another way of distracting the fanbase from their own mistakes.

I have no doubt Oriol Romeu is an asset but let’s not be fooled by this.

We’ll probably hire some 3rd division Bundesliga manager as Will Still’s replacement.

It feels like Romeu coming back has been an option since the summer. The fact it happens straight after the manager is sacked makes me think Still was blocking it.

I hope you are wrong Willo but, unfortunately, I think you are probably right, and my optimism will be crushed yet again by these charlatans in control of our club.

You can't help but feel that the club have taken notice of Sunderland with Granit Xhaka and thought "we need a bit of that".

To turn us into anything remotely resembling Sunderland lite we'll need more than Oriol. They have recruited wisely and realised you need a squad/team packed with athletes who have strength, power and speed. We have little or none in our squad yet continue to recruit comparative weaklings. Spors needs to wake up and smell the coffee.

Yeah feel the same - my pleasure in seeing a player of Romeu’s stature back at the club is tempered significantly by SR’s demonstrable ability to ultimately fuck things up, thereby negating any positive step forwards. Brace yourself chaps - I have a feeling tomorrow night will see the return of some ‘old’ favourites and a lot of aimless possession.

He'd smell coffee and conclude that he fancies a cup of tea.

We can light up the ground on Saturday with some "Ori...Oriol....Ori....Oriol...Ori...Oriol...Oriol Romeu". Going to be a beautiful thing. Some massive thighs strolling around in a Saints shirt once more.
