Surprised with this with Welington out long term, I know Jelert can play there and we have Manning but I figured it would be Breezy on the move. Could be both but we'd be back to 3 FBs again. Can only assume Taylor wants regular football.

Wellington supposed to be out for two months which isn't forever. Could be back before November.

But what about our defensive midfield, defence and goalkeeper?

Got to hope it’ll look better in a proper system. We’ve always looked shaky with 3 CBs. WS has got to tighten things up.

Mads Wood Stephens Jelert

(Bree THB Quarshie/Edwards Manning)

That, with some decent protection in front of them will hopefully do the trick. We’ve struggled with the space in behind the wing backs so need to eradicate that. Not playing Manning will help, he’s just too slow and slow to close down, but reasonable as backup.

Really exciting that we now have Azaz, Fellows & Scienza in the building or close to joining. Each of them brings the creativity and goal scoring that we have missed.

The other thing to note is that if each of them has a fault it is their defensive work, all of them have been highlighted as weak in that area.  It is going to put a lot of pressure on Charles, Downes or Jander and our defence when we don't have the ball.  I wouldn't be surprised to see Frazer keep his place for a little while yet as he is probably more disciplined and defensive minded than the other three.

Exciting time ahead.

That’s lovely. Of course we have to see whether the new signings actually bear fruit, but we’ve done well this last week to reshape the squad.

I assume if Aribo and Smallbone can’t be shifted, the midfielder from Serie A, Doumbia is not going to happen?

Sheaf going from Cov to Wrexham probably a sign that Smallbone move is dead. They will have spent £30m this summer, with nothing coming back the other way.

League 1 GK, play off defence, Championship winning midfield and a mid table Championship strike force. Hopefully it’s enough.

Scrap that Tim Sherwood is in now #freeAustin!

Anyone remember him refusing to come out of the Sky box in the away end at Fratton Park when we lost?

Yeah, they're not quite the same kind of player but that's quite an outlay.  Would have thought someone in the Championship would fancy him on loan though but I guess wages might be an issue for some.

Maybe I’m just incredibly naive, but I think Archer is shit hot at this level. Could easily be the divisions leading scorer if we can get the ball to him.

keeper is our weakness however. How long until McCarthy is number 1 again..

Yeah, Armstrong banged in loads at this level last time we were here and Archer is a much better finisher. Start him in every game, get him the ball round the box and tell him to just shoot for the corner of the goal every time, he'll end up with 25-30.

Dont think that’s too naive.

I have a feeling he’s gonna be one of those Dwight Gayle / Adam le Fondre / Arma types who is great at champ, but not physical enough to step up to PL. He was good against Watford

One to keep half an eye on is Aguerd has left West Ham. That's where the THB link originated from. Nothing more said on this yet but something to be mindful of.

I guess we will need to utilise Smallbone in the squad as backup if he's not sold. We will need a body if one of the three options we have gets injured or suspended.

As long as he's not a regular starter, which he won't be now, Smallbone would add some depth to our midfield. If he's happy being a squad player with minimal mins then that's fine. It would make our CM area look fairly well stocked tbf.

He has been injured/still is injured, so he's not being kept away from the team in the same way Edozie and Aribo are. Would be a fairly easy re-integration should no move materialise.

They're signing Charlie Cresswell, he was their number 1 choice.

We're going to win each game 4-3 😎

We desperately need a goalkeeper who doesn't dive over the ball when someone shoots from absurdly acute angles. I'm guessing we are going to ignore this crucial position yet again.

And someone who can actually put the ball in the net.

And a defensive midfielder who can defend the midfield.

Wood and Stephens.... christ.

Assuming this winger come off there's a good argument to say we have the best midfield in the division. Probably mid table defence unless still can change the system to something that works and God know with the strikers probably quite low given how much they've lost their confidence. The hope must surely be that we create so many chances that the strikers will have to score eventually. It's risky but could work.

Fair enough. He wasn't bad value for under a million, we've upgraded now though and it's best he moves on.

Based on there being no further noise there can only be one conclusion.

It was probably based on us losing one of Downes/Smallbone, but neither look to be off so nothing will happen there.

I don't understand why people are expecting a CB? and to say a partner for wood? WTF?

We have Stephens, THB, Quarshie, Ronnie Edwards, Wood as CB's. There is absolutely no possibility that a CB is even on our radar with those options. In fact we'd probably be open to losing 1.

Roerslev, Harwood-Bellis & (theoretically) Jelert would get into nearly every team in the division, and even Stephens, Quarshie and Welington would probably be on most teams wishlist. Wood, Edwards and Manning are very strong backups too.

That's why football isn't played on paper. We leak like a sieve. Also Bazunu is part of the defence...

But it is played on Football Manager! Hopefully we can move to a back 4 and see if they can actually do the job..!
