They have been prepared to spend decent levels of cash - last time and this time in the Championship - compared to other teams at this level. The problem has been that most of it has been spent on shite players and paying off shite managers. They cannot be accused of not putting their hands in their pockets. That argument dies a death when you look at what they've wasted over the last 4 years, pretty much every window they've presided over has been a catastrophic mess. They've wasted money. We have no idea where this money is coming from or if they're racking up debts to make these mistakes, no idea. But I'm past the point of giving them any slack because of this reasoning now. You can spend all the money you want, but if you just continue to make the same mistakes then you are putting that environment into financial turmoil. You wait - next summer when we inevitably are still in the Championship, you'll start to hear all of the nonsense about finances and how we need to look after the club, reduce cash outgoings etc etc. 6

Doesn’t really matter if they spend if they waste it all though does it? And they’ve fucked up enough times that this argument shouldn’t hold water, they aren’t suddenly going to start making sensible appointments now. They are rapidly running out of rope

No 'extra' cash has been put into the club. I realise that but they haven’t asset stripped us and pocketed the cash like some other clubs have been subjected to. Small mercies but it could have been a lot worse. 1

UpweySaint Posted 1 hour ago Posted 1 hour ago 4 hours ago, Turkish said: This has been the problem for years, even before SR. Buying quantity over quality, buying players for what we can sell them for in 2 years time rather than buying quality now. You can count on one hand the amount of decent, proven players we've brought over the last 10 years or so. Why they do the same thing over and over again is just bizarre. You've got clubs like Brighton, Bournemouth and Forest regularly spending 25m+ on players every window whereas despite having more than a decade of Premier league money were still shopping in the bargain basement. When you think about how much we've wasted over the years on centre backs trying to find the new Van Dijk when we could easily have picked up a couple of good, solid experienced Premier league players and built a back 4 round them. Same with goalkeepers, dicking around with Baz, we could have even picked up better than him on a free transfer over the last few seasons. It’s absolutely ridiculous. Largely agree. It’s balance. Taking punts on potential is reasonable when combined with squad building that includes enough seasoned pros to integrate new players alongside. I’m okay with having some hits and some misses but when it leaves us with Stephens, Downes, Armstrong, Aribo and McCarthy as the ‘senior pros’ to fall back on we’ve clearly fucked it. 2

This is the issue, it’s not just changing the manager, but one that can change the culture and get a team out of the squad of players to get the points needed for the playoffs. If Romeu is coming in as the enforcer/respect the badge or fúck off type player, the manager needs to be able to make changes for the benefit of the team, not sure if SR will go that far, partly protecting their ‘assets’ and changing the management dynamic. Not that there are many Clough/Strachan types who are around at this level.

SaintN14 Posted 34 minutes ago Posted 34 minutes ago New name klaxon Rene Maric is mentioned in the article below. Austrian who is currently assistant to Komoany at Bayern, and previously an assistant at Leeds. Also ex assistant to Marco Rose at Dortmund. Linked to his first managerial role at Hajduk Split in the summer. His profile feels similar to Will Still ie young (he’s 33), former asssitant, not really an ex pro. Maybe one to watch. https://footballleagueworld.co.uk/managers-southampton-fc-must-consider-from-germany-miron-muslic/

There was an article in the Athletic in April 2023 that said SR had invested £48m in 2022, with the issue of new shares that diluted Katrina's remaining 20% holding and then a further £15m of shares were issued in April 2023. Looking at the accounts for 2023, shares were also issued to the value of £4m in May 2023 and £18m in June 2023. I'm no accountant, but that £85m appears in the share premium account, which means its not available to supplement general day to day operating expenses. I think it could be used for capital projects, like a stadium expansion. Edited just now by Chez
