Not unhappy to see a player go that refuses to play (if that’s true), but as our best CB (not difficult) it’s all about the replacement(s). Schlotterbeck has made a big difference but a new right-sided CB better than Stephens and Woods is essential to our promotion push. Think £30m is a good deal for Villa based on current player sales and THB’s potential in a better defence, but he’s not irreplaceable.

Yes, and there's that nagging question: Did we have to sell him? But loyalty in football (both from a player and club perspective) is a thing of the past. He could have been instrumental in our promotion push, become club captain in the premier league and who knows. But football just sees ££££ signs nowadays.

Instead, there are already signs that the grass is greener.

Probably won't get to play in the CL this season after all that. Given it was specifically one of the reasons he moved to Villa, i suspect he's quite disappointed - a bad start to his villa career and relationship with the club. I still have my doubts its going to prove a good move for him (other than for his wallet), but i hope it goes well and we see him shining for villa and england in the future.

Talksport saying it could be that, but could be part of a homegrown rule and he lost out due to numbers allowed.

Why is Harwood-Bellis not included?

UEFA squads must include at least eight 'homegrown' players, although four must be trained by the club, meaning Unai Emery faced a numerical dilemma. 

Villa only have two players who spent three years or more in their academy between the ages of 15 to 21 (goalkeeper James Wright and defender Lamare Bogarde).

As a result, the Villans did not fill all four mandatory club-trained spots, which reduces their total List A capacity from 25 down to 23 players.

There are also some suggestions Harwood-Bellis may have completed his deadline day move too late to meet UEFA's deadline for squad submissions.

The crazy fucked-up world of the top end of the Premier League now. Spend £25-30m on a senior player and then say you had enough cover already that you don't even need to pick them in your squad for the biggest competition! A real shame for him, especially with who they are playing as you say.

Agree. What people also forget is that most players spend longer trying to make it as a professional than actually being one. From the age of 5 or so they’re training every day, travelling miles every week and making loads of sacrifices. Of course some are mercenaries and would move somewhere else for a £1000 a week more but most want to play and have dedicated their lives to do so. THB won’t be happy unless of course he knew when he signed this was the case.

Yep. It's clear from Emery's comments that THB didn't know until after he'd signed. He's lost his opportunity to play massive games, show himself against the best, improve, etc. Money isn't making up for that. 

Look at players like Ramsdale. Sure, he'll be minted, but he won't feel fulfilled or that he's making any kind of contribution in his work.

People who think money alone makes people happy, don't understand people.
