It's all over. Dusan Tadic's second-half penalty - given away foolishly by Yann M’Vila - was enough to hand Southampton a 1-0 win. Sunderland worked hard and seemed in control of the game, but they must cut out these mistakes. That's three losses from four matches under Sam Allardyce. The Saints march on.

What?!!

Saints were in control for the vast majority - just didn't get the luck needed for more goals.

absolutely deserved win.

great to see us dominate in the 2nd half as well as the 1st. Missed a lot of chances but won in the end.

65% possession away from home

Tadic my MoM with VvD a hairs width behind.

Tadic is just so much better on the left.....

Shout to Clasie. Good game. He was given acres of space mind but very good all the same

dont think VvD lost a header the whole game. what a beast.

but Tadic was a real creative outlet and he was the one who was going to create.

nice to finally win up there

Great Team Performance... VVD immense and I though Clasie was very effective in mopping up and keeping the tempo going.

This.

He's getting better, isn't he? Good vision, passing, and it looks like he can shoot as well, given the right circumstances.

Was worried about being bullied off the ball with that midfield - but in Ron we trust who had faith in those 3 ballplayers not being bullied and keeping possession. Good to see some professional closing game out tactics with short corners, ball in corner and bringing on another centre back as we knew we would have 6 minutes of hoof ball to deal with. Excellent third of season given our slow start and injuries and good to see us play like that without Wanyama - Claise coming along well, ironically it is now in attack where we are struggling for players - worried about Pelle picking up a ban (almost certain), we need Long or JRod to be back firing by then.

Didn't hear much about Pelle, did he get battered again?

No, his hold up play was outstanding today.

Given Vvd my vote because he was just brilliant. Had Fletcher (who btw is a beast in the air) in his pocket the whole game. Only let him out to be substituted. He looks a really good buy. Don't think anyone had a bad game. Also thought the pen was a bit soft but i'll take that!!

Clasie looks like he could turn out to be the central midfielder everyone mistakenly believes Steven Davis to be ;)

Dominated the game, but lots of unimaginative or just plain sloppy play in the final third. Glad we got a pen because we didn't look like scoring from open play. Still think the team has a creativity problem in the middle, but with Gaston missing again, perhaps time to accept that we just don't have the personnel to fix it.

It's the kind of professional away win that other teams always seem to pull off and we rarely do.

VvD, Clasie, Tadic, Pelle... all getting stronger each game. Davis had a great game too. Almost every time we gain possession Davis has something to do with it. He's constantly harrying, pressing. A beautiful ingredient of our secret sauce. Meanwhile NBC commentators agree that bertrand is best left back in premier league.

Now we just need Spurs to lose 5-0 tomorrow, and we go 6th. More realistically, a gap is starting to open up above the mid-table teams......

VVD is an absolute monster. Will get a bollocking from Ron though for charging forward on 90+3 then losing the ball and getting caught out of position but that was a brilliant performance from him. Victory for football.

Pretty much ran the game from start to finish. Very composed, very dominant in midfield and very solid at the back. Vvd is now as dominant for us in the prem as he was for Celtic. The only thing missing at. The moment is that option off the bench in attacking areas.

Hopefully Juanmi will fill that role.

VVD in that last 10 minutes was immense with the exception of his run upfield which Koeman was very f**ked off with - and rightly so.

Great win albeit not playing our absolute best. Though Sunderland were awful and are in for a long season.

Which shouldn't be a problem once Long and J-Rod are fit again.

Good thing we got the goal, I think if we had gone to the 80' minute goalless we would've conceded somehow.

What's up with Juanmi though, does Koeman not rate him or why isn't he getting any game time?

I'm not sure this is the type of game for him yet... Give him a year to bulk up in the gym and he would be a good option, but at this stage (and against some pretty old school style defenders) he would just get brushed off the ball too easily.

He is one for the future.

From the guardian: "Watching the first half was a slightly gruelling experience, leavened only by a series of classy cameos from the aptly named Jordy Clasie. The Southampton midfielder seemed to touch the ball more than anyone else, not to mention control the pace and tempo and some of his interchanges with Dusan Tadic offered mini masterclasses in ball manipulation."

A bit OTT but I get what they mean. Clasie is beginning to look like the player we all hoped he would be, and it hasn't taken that long.

I agree with most of what you say, but remember we did have 2 efforts cleared off the line by defenders with the goalie beaten we DID create.
