Kyle Walker-Peters

As this seems to have advanced now, though I'd move into its own thread rather than the massive January window thread.

Daily Echo reporting that Saints have beaten Brighton and Palace to the loan signing of KWP.

Spurs wanted a sale this window but Saints wouldn't agree to it at this stage. Loaning him first.

Thoughts?

A loan with an obligation maybe?

Certainly have the money available if we don’t take up the Danso option.

Text one of my best mates who is a very level-headed Spurs STH who has watched Saints with me on occasion...

"He’s not even our second choice RB and he’s the only other RB at the club. Not good enough for us and not good enough for you either."

Hope this is a Ryan Bertrand style pickup!

Yeah a level headed Spurs supporter I work with said a few weeks ago, before we were even linked I think that playing him was like having a school boy at full back.

Like you say hopefully its a Ryan Bertrand type thing and if not then hes just cover for 4/5 months.

Atleast it seems to be a "try before you buy" situation. We have 5/6 months to see if he'd be a good enough replacement for Cedric, if he isn't I'm sure he'll be sent back and we'll look at alternatives. Worth a punt, if just for a bit of cover. You'd expect we have an option to buy if we want him.

Indeed, seems eminently sensible if it's a deal on those terms

If it's a loan with an option rather than obligation to buy then I think it's a good move. We can check him out ala Danso and then decide. He can play both sides and is young with at least some PL experience. Whilst not great he has been ok every time I have seen him play (only a handful). Was he not tipped for England not long ago?

Tottenham loaning us him before our replay is sus... :)

Seriously though he burst on to the scene and did well, quick, can cover both full back positions, and as it’s a loan (unless it’s with an obligation to buy) then it’s risk free. Yes he’s been overlooked lately but Spurs still wanted £15 million to buy him so that says something.

I remain open minded about this one, we certainly needed a specialist full back and he could turn out to be a master stroke. Yes I’m sure people would have wanted a first choice right back but this means we have until summer to properly scout one.

Palace are in for Norwich’s Jamal Lewis at left back. I’d be all over that as a long term successor to Bertrand.

Not sure why people are against this. Every time I've seen him play I have thought he has been decent and in the few premier league games he has played he has provided assists.

He can play both flanks and if a loan to buy option it is a win win situation. January is always hard to buy players and if we made a punt on a player from Europe it could be another player we loan out for years. Hopefully this is a Bertrand type of loan.

Think the key question here is, assuming we would have an option to buy in the summer, who is the better bet to replace Cedric from next season? Valery or KWP?

I haven’t given up hope that our recent progress may persuade Cedric to sign an extension by the way. But the last we heard he is off and so for me it’s less about this season and more about next.

Seems a bit odd. We are one of the most form teams in the league, just about competing for a European place, and could do with a signal of intent rather than a squad filler. So it seems odd that we would sign Spurs 4th choice right back. Arguably 5th choice as they would probably play Sissoko there ahead of KWP.

I don't think we would be going for KWP and supposedly still be interested in Frimpong if there was any chance of Cedric staying. Think this activity is a strong indication that he will be playing elsewhere. Shame, but some of the forum experts say he is crap so guess it must be true.

Quite suprised by the negative reaction to this. After the singings of Carillo, Hoedt, Vestergaard etc I am quite pleased that Ralph has the chance to evaluate a player at close quarters before spending on them.

As for KWP not making it at Spurs, even to break through there is tough enough, and we know Mourinho likes big, physical players so hardly a suprise he isn't a fan.

If he signs its a no lose for Saints really, ahead of what needs to be a big summer of outs and ins.

So Valery out for the season? Seems a bit weird if not.

He can play on the left so can provide cover for RB as well, something Ralph mentioned as a priority since it seems that Vokins isn't ready for the PL. I don't think the signing means that Valery is out for the season.

It's not great for him though. Say we've got a fully fit squad and you can put Valery on the bench, to cover right back, or KWP to cover both. Who gets left out?

How long will it take Valery to regain match fitness and we don’t know how much the virus has taken out of him

I think its more the fact that we were very interested in Maehle and he did look like an exciting prospect with plenty of decent top level experience, and probably as we haven't a pot to p*** in were not pursuing him and going for cheap option, same as Augustin deal, he's so much more of a Ralph type player than Adams, why they didn't let Leeds take Che and we jumped at JKA ill never know

Not so sure.

Why is Maehle a great player all of a sudden? He is apparently available for €7M - not much in today's terms and no one has rushed to buy him? KWP would be £15M for permanent signing. Seems a very wise move to get him on loan and if he is any good then buy him in the summer - much less risk no?

As for Augustin, let's see how he does at Leeds - was touted for £38M https://tbrfootball.com/everton-shouldnt-match-38m-asking-price-for-augustin-given-his-lack-of-games/ not so long ago. Seems Leeds will pay cira £3M for a loan to end of season and £18M option to buy - some drop! Is he really better than what we have?

I don't disagree that our owner probably has an infestation of moths in his wallet, but we need to be a lot more smarter about our future buys.

Not sure this logic makes sense at all. If we didn't have "a pot to **** in" then why would we not sell Adams for the reported 20m and get JKA for the cheaper reported 18m. Secondly, the most I've ever seen Maehle valued at is 12m and the least I've seen KWP valued at is 12m. So actually in both cases we are going for the more expensive option. Maybe the guy who plays in a vastly inferior league and the guy who can't get in to a poor monaco team are a little overrated on here?
