Pompey Takeover Saga

Fitzhugh Fella

I think the reality is that, typical of football, he was loved in places, liked in places, disliked in places, hated in places. He was in the third category when it came to Wimbledon.

I'm not saying I agree with it by the way.

Indeed. You'll never find a player liked and respected by everyone, and vice versa.

Eg somebody somewhere likes John Terry.

As others have pointed out, Micah Hall comes across as a bit of an idiot by indulging in rather feeble ripostes to a bit of prodding on Twitter.

Which 4-1 victory of the Skates is he referring to? Is he harking back to some halcyon past glory 8 1/2 years ago, when Harry (freedom of Portsmouth) Redkrap's Saints team capitulated to them at Krap Nottarf? Presumably, as their other more recent one was a 1-4 scoreline, their illustrious FA Cup victory 3 1/2 years ago, when they as a Premiership team stuffed full of internationals beat the third division Saints who dominated 70% of the match? Just to refresh the memory the Skate team was:-

D James, N Belhadj, H Hreidarsson (R Hughes, 89), P Diop, J Utaka (F Piquionne, 72), H Mullins, J O'Hara, M Wilson, H Yebda, A Basinas (Q Owusu-Abeyie, 58), A Dindane

Subs not used: D Webber, D Tosic, N Kanu, J Ashdown

As I recall, the then England Goalkeeper James made a series of wonderful saves that if otherwise conceded would have produced quite a different result. Also, they had a couple of players who shouldn't have even played for them because of some shenanigans or other, both of whom scored if I remember rightly.

But what is even more interesting about that match is the sombre reflection that the idiot Hall ought to be undertaking, that those players that earned them Cup glory left them flirting with extinction and reduced them in such a short time to a fourth division side capable of being thrashed 4-0 by Wimbledon.

We on the other hand are currently third in the Premiership with a team paradoxically that includes three players who featured in that Cup match.

While Hall w*nks over his old DVD of whichever 4-1 victory it was, he should also acknowledge that it was truly a Pyrrhic victory.

for by 54 years of support of the saints, other than 3 years the skates have always lived in the past to an era before they were all born. Used to get annoyed by it now I just laugh, what is interesting how quickly here in border country that they have disappeared to wa*k themselves silly over teams they never saw play.

suppose they are like Royal Engineers supporters

Beyond me why they keep referring to the 4 - 1 victories - for the reason Wes points out, but also, haven't we done them by four or five in the past? If it's relevant to bring something up from eight and a half years ago, is it not also relevant for us to bring something up from 40-odd years ago?

Moral high ground - we're on it, looking way down below...

I know non competitive games shouldn't count but didn't we also score seven at Fratton Park in a testimonial (Alan Knight's) when Le Tizz took the pizz

Also it is worth remembering that Pompey's 2-0 win at the Dell in January 1988 was their first win in 10 derby games and our friends were so elated that they named a Fanzine after it.

We then won the next 6!!

So in 27 'modern derbies' Saints have won 14 and lost 6 with 7 draws and scored 54 times and conceded 36

I guess this explains some of the bad feeling from down the road

didn't they play a lot of that match with 12 players as well, and we had Dave Beasant up front.

I recent history they have the upper hand. They beat us twice 4-1 , the first was upsetting the 2nd was by default. I doubt either had the same feeling for them as Morans last minute winner at FP. There they were singing about coming to the dell the next they were crying and very very silent as they melted away at the final whistle. Let them have their moment as deep down they know ,like the FA cup win it will be in dispute forever. Steve Moran, last minute goal due to one of their morons throwing a coin that gave us that little extra time for that most wonderful football feeling. I was there when we won the FA cup,but for the adrenaline rush that goal beats the lot for me. Unless you were I doubt you'd understand what I'm on about. Going to an away match at your biggest rivals with 6500 Saints fans and scoring a last minute winner is unforgettable. The closest they ever got was the minute equaliser they got at SMS but without the ongoing wage bill and debt

Isn't all this historical points scoring a little irrelevant?

What really matters is that now (17/11/13) we sit 80 places above them with arguably one of the best run clubs in the country.

And they are a laughing stock - with their dive into obscurity unmatched in recent football history.

That's the history that really counts

I workd witha skate who used to bring up all sorts of fixtures to prove they'd won more games against us. Included were Hampshire cups and southern leagues, but funny enough southern leagues didn't count when adding up trophys ( despite it being on a par with the football league at one time). I used to just count football league and premeirship games and trophys. We'd won more games but they'd won the cup twice to our once. What really used to get to him was my assertion that their best finish was first and ours was second, but second to a team that were the best in Europe for 4 of the previous 7 years, and that any other era we would have won it, we were just unlucky to come up against Liverpool. It was ********, but it really used to get to him.

In most peoples lifetime, we've finished above them 90% of the time, beaten them more and won the same amounts of silverware. We have been in Europe a lot more and are now vastly superior, with their only sucsessful period bankrupting them twice. Im happy with that.

Slight aside, but just been reading the new Secret Footballer book and it looks likely it is Dave Kitson. On that basis, there's some insight into life at Pompey, the wage deferrals and the SOS Pompey training ground picket, cotterill's departure, abuse from Skates on his return to FP etc.

All good stuff if you can join the dots. Also a good story involving a Sunseeker that seems to involve a few of our players from the Strachan era

Wasn't it Claus, Beattie and Bridge who owned the boat???

And they never averaged over 37,000 in a ground that had a capacity in excess of 50,000

Actually, FP's capacity was nearer 60k which, despite their "golden era" was never troubled, they only ever got just over 50k twice. And that included thousands of locally based military personel that were allowed in for free and in a time that Southampton fans thought nothing of going down there to see the big teams coming to town when Saints were away.

Gentleman, just smile knowingly and let their bitterness eat them up. It works a treat.

Worked great throughout the 60s/70s/80s/90s - just like now, far bigger fish to fry these days.

Yep, think it was 5-1, and the 1 was a typical testimonial penalty awarded to let Knight score on his big night.

I was there as I live out that way and I always thought Knight's long service was worthy of acknowledgement. Anyway, the score wasn't important and I don't remember really - thought it was 7 actually - but more typically Pompey was the fact that we were kept in the away end at the end of the match whilst Pompey fans proceeded to lob lumps of concrete over the wall. The police liaison officer in our midst said "oh, haven't seen some of these faces for a few years.." We were all in a holiday mood and good natured, and poor Alan Knight was so embarassed - bless 'im - and came over to apologise when we were kept in 'for our own safety' whilst the locals were dispersed..

Next time any Skate tries to talk to me about our rivalry I'll just feign ignorance as to who Portsmouth are and talk back about our rivalry with Brighton and Bournemouth.

Thankfully it's pretty rare that I ever get to meet any now though. They seem much harder to find these days, don't they?

Do you remember Dave Beasents 30 minutes of stand up to keep us occupied? i had a cracking time that night. My old man and younger sister sat in with the skates and I was worried for them as they had parked near the ground (saints stickers and all). walking past the froddington it was a warzone, ring my dad "yep, all home, no bother at all"

Yep 12-man skates 1 v 11-man Saints 5 (mid 90s)

John Milkins testimonial (c 1970) skates 0 v Saints 7 (seven!)

I remember that night very well went down on the train it was a battle at every station past Swanwick as the Skates were trying to get on the same train.

Torres is right, I tend to ask the few that I see if the club is still trading.

And those accounts just support that theory.

"Blimey, does your club still exist? I haven't seen any reference to you in the news for years and never see you in the league tables. How far down do I need to look?"

That's from September.

How's that plucky promise going?

I see even Claridge is getting bored with the spin, he's had a little pop on Twitter about which player wil be wheeled out next to tell the easily-led what they want to hear.

'We'll bounce back, let's turn fatpipes into a fortress, I'll fire the goals, he'll cut out the mistakes, we'll put together and fight, blah, blah, yawn.'

Exactly. They can keep that FA Cup in 2008 because they are still paying heavily for it - literally and metaphorically - and it may yet push them into another administration. We can admire our 1976 winning team with no regrets whereas their celebration DVD is full of players that are still owed money, Harry and Sacha Gaydamak. So viewing it for them can only be bittersweet at best, hence why they are retreating into the 1930s again. An era when there is scant footage of their exploits. Saints fans? For the 1970s/80s glory days we only have to record ITV4 for the Big Match repeats or look on You Tube and our current team may even surpass those teams so we may be experiencing another set of halcyon days.

They can make up all the stories they want about dock strikes but like many rivalries, this one started by Saints overtaking them in the 1960s and apart from our implosion for 3 years and their criminally-funded (allegedly) activities, Saints have never looked back. Can't see it changing for at least a decade.

Indeed. I enjoy asking, with a wry smile, 'did pompey play today'. I softly chuckle when they tell me their opponents, and I laugh & gently shake my head from left to right when they tell me the result, whatever it is. Then change the subject.

Its a moment of beauty.

You have to draw a simple conclusion after watching that. They are not very good!!!! In fact what a shables of a team. It does make you wonder how they have managed to get as many points as they have. You have to fear for there future, if you were of the blue persuasion!!

There is a lot of noise on their message boards wanting him gone - Personally I think he is doing a sterling job :) :)

I see he is on a one year rolling contract, so it will cost them a years salary to get rid of him. I would guess his total package would be somewhere around 150k???, including win bonuses and cup competitions etc with a basic of about 75k???? ....................or am I miles out

Certainly saving on the win bonus - that must have been included in the financial budget - and yes he is doing a cracking job
