What is this feel  good factor i am feeling right now, first an ugly win last night and now the legend that is Romeu back "home". Now is it too much to ask for 3points on Saturday and the announcement of a manager that us fans can really get behind!

I don’t think you will find a single saints fan who isn’t made up with this. It feels right on every level. Even if it doesn’t go perfectly he is a quality player who cares deeply for the club and will make a contribution on and off the pitch. Welcome back Ori!

If we were bringing him back to the Prem I'd have reservations but for a struggling Championship team that need experience and guile in DM, at his age and with his recent experience, I'm happy we've made this move. Good for leadership, good for morale, good for experience and even if his fitness levels aren't once what they were (tbc), he'd have been a perfect fit to bring off the bench last night when protecting our lead.

At last SR do something to unite the fanbase. Oriol's interview on the official site is a must watch. An inspiration to us all amid the dross we have had to put up with for so long. Build a team around this guy for as long as he can step on the pitch for us because he gets it and loves the city and the club.

It’s just a fantastic moment.

After years of mercenaries and people shitting on us, leaving at the first opportunity.

Hes chosen to come back, walk into the shit storm and do his best to sort us out.

I had huge respect for him anyway, but he’s really a top bloke

I'd go so far as to say that if we do see some significant improvements then I'd consider him something of a Saints legend.

Yeah fair points. It’s a deal until the end of the season too so depending on how he gets on/where we are we can revisit if an extension suits both parties.

Three points and Ori back. I know things are pretty much still a shit show but god it’s good to have something positive saints related. Being a saints fan has felt like such a slog for so long. You can feel it on here - there are always a range of opinions but the level of frustration and negativity feels heavy.

Massive personal tangent but on Monday my twin boys turned two. When they were born they were very early and we were rushed from our local hospital to Winchester so they could get the care they needed - my joke is the boys were such saints fans they were determined to be born in Hampshire. A few weeks after birth one of my boys was very poorly and spent a long time in Southampton paediatric intensive care - a lot of it in an induced coma. I can’t put into words what it was like but one of my few distractions was Saints. There were plenty of games where I would be by his bedside either listening to commentary or telling him about my plans to take him and his brother to Saints games. I told him about our European adventure and my first game. He heard oh when the saints and a cleaned up version of what should I be more times than I cared to mention.

This is a long roundabout way of expressing what the club means to me - albeit something of an overshare. Seeing Ori’s genuine love for the club feels so very important and I anticipate it will be similar for others who have an attachment to the club that goes well beyond what happens on the pitch each week. It’s alway means something to fans to see players who seem to get it.

Ever since we sold him we've lacked his type, his absence is one of the main reasons we got relegated and have continued to struggle.

This was one of the first major, major SR errors - selling him and assuming Lavia and AMN would replace him. Not just in terms of ability, but also his off the pitch influence and the standards he instilled. We went from Romeu to AMN, just think about that for a second!

He is absolutely not the player he was back in 2020, it would be foolish to expect that, but you will tell and sense his influence around the place fairly rapidly I think. He doesn't get spoken about as highly as he does at all former clubs for no reason. He's a standard setter in a squad solely lacking any character.

Only an 8 month contract? Perhaps the footballing geniuses at the helm of Sport Republic are starting to learn from their past mistakes after all...

If I recall correctly, when he first signed, he toured the city, getting a feel for the place and it's history, immersing himself in his new home and it's feeling. Gives the impression he doesn't just treat the club as a cash cow. We see many examples of players stating this and that club is special, but with Orio, it feels sincere. AMN for example, gave the impression of the exact opposite. With Lavia, we were only ever going to be a stepping stone, but everyone was aware and resigned to that. Orio has been one of my fave players in recent years as I rate passion and willingness to muck in, as sought after attributes. He has these in abundance. Great signing and hopefully sat in front of a back 4, will instil some composure, confidence and grit into our otherwise fragile and delicate mess of a defence. His studious nature will serve him well if he ever goes into coaching. Unlike Nivea boy who is only just trying to ensure he continues to make a living, remaining on the periphery of everything, stealing a living.

Romeu wanted to leave, so don't really blame SR for accomodating it. Agree their choice of replacements were very flawed. Glad to have him back, even if its just as an impact sub to close games out.

I remembered this! Not many players do this.

Another player who has thrived in a 4231/433

one day, we may switch to that and properly coach the team as such

I have a funny feeling with his aging legs, our decent options at CM and our struggling defence he might be coming back to play CB.

Shame we couldn't get him in the summer. Hope he's made captain immediately.

Sure could have done with a skipper that has a cool head last night for the last 20 mins. Not that it cost us but I was getting very pissed off with shoehorn getting carried along in the moment.

Wouldn't surprise me, players in wrong positions.

I want to be happy, and will absolutely love to be proved wrong, but have a feeling he won't quite have the presence he once had here.

Welcome home, Rom.

Surrounded by what’s here now yes he will. Had we still had Premier League quality players then I see your point. But we haven’t !

Why would a lack of fitness make him a good option to play CB? We're stocked with plenty of better options at CB anyway, Rom will mostly play limited sub appearances as a DM when we need a calm head to see out games.

In those formations, yes. I felt his final full season with us (when our season fell off a cliff and we lost something like 12 or 13 out of our last 15), Ralph was persisting with. I or variations of his 4222 and Romeu was being asked to do all the midfield work with JWP in the middle, often against sides who were actually going 4231 or 433. Outnumbered in the middle of the park, basically. Back then there were quite a few on here who said (and still do say tbf) that Romeu’s legs had gone, we needed to get rid etc etc. it was drivel then, and his successful seasons for Girona proved he had plenty left. You don’t get signed for Barca, even in a sub’s role, if your legs have gone. And you certainly don’t play in 100 games in 3 seasons across all completions.

For a Oriol to work well, I think he needs a midfield 3 where he is one of a defensive 2, and the extra midfielder is either another standard CM or a number 10 like Azaz. I don’t think the current 343 or whatever it is will play ideally to his natural position (certainly didn’t last night when it looked like we had 7 defenders on the pitch at various times).

Hopefully Eckert can get Sheff Wed out of the way with what the players are used to then get us playing a system that maximises the skill set of players we actually have at our disposal. Oriol and Shea Charles, when back, give us enough height, presence and coverage to have 2 CBs.

In reality he'll probably be one of the fittest players at the club.

I think you may need to temper your expectations somewhat. He last played as a 73rd minute substitute in May.

He is too old and slow - it's a completely pointless signing. He'll be no more use than Nivea Boy.
