Summer Transfer Window 2023

Hah, well you can only assume we've got significant transfer targets lined up and ready to come straight in... To sanction selling Tino, Lavia, and JWP, all after the season's started (and within the space of a few days) would be madness otherwise. Will be hugely damaging for morale and cohesion. Whether we can get anywhere near the requried quality in is anyone's guess, because selling those 3 players does nothing for the ridiculous squad bloat that we're suffering from.

Realistically, Tino doesn't need to be replaced because we have KWP (for now at least), Lavia's replacement is Charles and JWP's replacement is Smallbone. It's other areas we desperately need to bolster.

Separately, wasn't the quote that we have other players waiting to join? Slightly hard to believe but does suggest deals are advanced for when we decide to pull the trigger

It would be mental to sell JWP to raise funds... but then keep Adams and KWP when they're leaving for free. Can't see any of them being here by October.

Yes I think they will leave but they are the ones who will be replaced with new players, not the other three

Whilst I am disappointed to see JWP go....I was hoping that he would stay around and be another MLT....we have been saying since last season that certain players will be leaving....and they are. We shouldn't be surprised. RM has already said that we have targets lined up to come in and that our team at the end of the transfer window will look a lot different to the current team. We are obviously going to have good spending power.  We have to be patient I guess......

Starting to wonder when the 'rebuilding' is going to start?

Linked with more youngsters with little experience when what we really need is a bit of experience. Did we not learn anything from last season?

Looks like Max Aaron's is on the brink of a move to Leeds so that's disappointing. Were we ever serious about signing him?

The press don't even seem to have any concrete info on potential targets. Everything I read is pure speculation and opinion.

What about Diallo, we haven't replaced him

Quite funny watching the reaction on here. Yesterday morning everyone seemed to be relatively happy. One bad result from a team of players THAT WE KNEW were shit and couldn't be arsed because we've watched them for the last couple of years, and news that JWP is off (who WE KNEW was off) and the fans have gone into meltdown.

Calm yourselves down guys.

I know there haven't been many links in the media but I don't know why people think KWP will stay. He's way too good for this league and will surely be snapped up by someone

Agreed.

He fits into the "anyone that is good and you want to keep, will go" category.

A few observations on JWP

1. There is no way he is turning out for Saints on Saturday. The risk of injury would surely prevent this from happening.

2. The idea of him staying and becoming a Southampton legend would surely hold little appeal for someone with his Portsmouth connections.

3. West Ham are a Noddy club and there is always the risk for JWP that they will come down this season. They are however in Europe this season. It may well be a Mickey Mouse league but it is Europe after all and JWP is on record as saying that it isi the European jaunts that he enjoyed most at Saints.

Expecting the members of a football forum to react to events in a pragmatic manner is stretching the imagination somewhat...

The worst part is they're giving £40m to United for Harry Maguire. JWP is undoubtedly worth £40m with 3 years left on his contract. We've sold our captain, our "Mr Southampton" well below our initial asking price.

Maguire is being reported at £30m fee also. Although completely agree we should of been demanding a lot more for JWP

By the looks of it JWP or Downes will be playing so the incentive is to get this wrapped up quickly for both parties sake

I won't trust that we know what we're doing until I see evidence.

Carry on shitting the bed over previous transfer windows if that helps you.  Why stop at 2 previous windows?  Why not 10 or 20??  Give yourself something to really worry about.

I have always rated JWP very highly and will be very sad to see him go.  Also to see him break the free kick record for another team. However if the Downes loan rumour is true this would make the day a bit brighter after seeing we do not have a decent second team following the Gillingham result.

Not sure how the Downes transfer would make that any better, we're losing one very good midfielder and signing one good midfielder, our second team is the same and our first team is weaker.

Just happier that following losing JWP and the crap second team at least there is news of an incoming apparently rated midfielder.

Downes is a West Ham fan so unless they went down next season (chortle) he probably wouldn't want to leave permanently. Get him in on loan for a season and then we can get a top talent from Europe in midfield when we get promoted, that would work. Downes is definitely Premier League quality at 24 so would be an excellent replacement.

Genuine question. Taking last season in isolation, apart from his free kicks, what quality or added benefit did JWP give us? He was a mediocre captain at best. His corners were average on the whole. His ability to find a telling pass that counted for something were limited. I’m far from convinced that if we get someone like Downes in that apart from his free kicks we won’t miss JWP at all. And that’s why a top 6 PL side haven’t gone for him. They know that his true talents are limited.

Has to have an option to buy, otherwise we're selling them our captain for £30M (and less than we're stated as wanting), then we take one of the country's best future prospects on loan to develop him for them, and then we'll get stung by west ham asking us for £25M-30M next summer... All of which means we'll have the same void to fill next year, or that we'll have effectively traded JWP for Downes.

If we're back in the Premier League we'll be able to sign someone better than Downes and probably for a lot less.

100%. The idea we were getting to the point where we didn't need to rely on loans to help us out was nice, but now we're back in the Championship we'd be handicapping ourselves by not doing so.

Burnley had 4 players in on loan last year who were regular starters. I think they've only bought one of them permanently, and gone on to replace the others with different options potentially better suited for the Prem.

Leeds have put up £8 for Akpom from Boro. We were linked in January so there must be some interest there. Predicted by many to be top goal scorer, what do we reckon?

Lens not Leeds is what I can see

Last year of his contract, but £8m still seems decent value for a guy that scored 28 goals last season.

There is zero money in the championship right now, due to the Prem avoiding it for players by and large.

Not sure Boro sell for that amount. Good guide to Piroe price.

Hang on.... Doesn't that mean we will be swapping JWP for 'one of the country's best future prospects', therefore there is no void to fill next year? And potentially still have £5m in our pockets.....
