The word legend is overused these days but he was a genuine legend of the game and an iconic figure. And from a Saints perspective a key part of the most exciting period in our history, and definitely we will never make a better, more astonishing signing than him! RIP.

Aww man, I knew he'd been battling cancer for a while, but hearing Kevin Keegan has passed away is sad, sad news.

I've tried to explain to my boys before now that it would be like us signing Dembelé or Rodri without a sniff of internet gossip or agent talk. It just couldn't happen now.

Our thoughts are with his family, friends and many colleagues he's had down the years. And with all his fans, of which we can count ourselves.

An inspiration. Not just for his skill or his many achievements. But mainly for him as a person. His foresight, will, honesty, determination and the way he lived his life.

A generational star.

I was 9 when KK signed. Days of seemingly endless sunshine. Not a care in the world with a great team, a great kit and Keegan as a Saint. Life as an 9 year old couldn't get any better. The passing of a footballing great and the passing of a golden age. RIP Kevin Keegan. Genuinely gutted.

Too often the word ‘legend’ is used. Today we lost a true legend. How very sad. Up there with my top five football moments in my life when he signed for us. For youngsters who don’t remember him, when we signed him it was huge. European Footballer of the Year. Lawrie pulled off a miracle. RIP KK.

The sole reason i support Saints - still remember walking home from junior school in Portchester & being told he signed.  Did not believe it so ran all the way home to get it confirmed on the radio.

My late Dad bought me us our first ever season tickets that season.

 

 

I'm also a Saint because of Kev. First footballing memories was having a scrapbook with the 1982 England squad on the back. Kev was my favourite player and I found out he played for Southampton so they became my club. RIP

What terrible news. What a player for club and country and, still seems unreal, he signed for my club.

It’s as clear as day the moment it came over the radio at work that Lawrie had got him, the disbelief, excitement and pure joy.

I think David Armstrong was judged to have been offside somewhere on the opposite side of the pitch and no where near the goal.
Would have been a goal in todays offside rules.
Some people on the TV saying he was a true scousers!!
Fact was he played for Liverpool, England, Hamburg Newcastle as well as the mighty Saints.
He was born in Doncaster so definitely not a scouser.

He played and scored in my first ever game at the Dell (4-0 win vs Leicester in 1980). I was only about 10 and couldn't believe I was seeing such a huge superstar right in front of me.

It's a shame that his time at Saints is generally pretty much air-brushed from history, as per the obituary on the BBC News website.

Very sad news. Fundamental part of probably the greatest team Saints ever had (76 was great but we were in the 2nd division). Keegan along with Bally and Williams, Channon (in his twilight years), Golac, Watson, Nick Holmes, Dave Armstrong, Chris Nicholl, wow we were exciting to watch.

Gutted to hear this. RIP Kev Keegan.

I have a match worn Keegan shirt that I was going to take to his event at the Concorde Club and get signed. It was given to a friends dad for his sports bar in Australia been hanging up there for 20 years. When his dad closed the bar he sold off the menoriblia this was item was passed to me.

I was too young to ever see him play but loved hearing the stories of his secret signing at the Potters Heron pub , Big Lawrie always enjoys retelling that one. 

Hard to explain to today's kids, would be like Saints signing Messi or Bellingham now?

Sad news RIP Kev. 

My Saints supporting era came after him, I grew up when Matt was smashing them in, but I know how big a move it was for the club to sign him.

Oh, no. I am so sad to hear this. He's a part of my first ever Saints memory. When I was probably 3 or 4 years old I visited a friend of my dad's whose son had a poster of Keegan on his bedroom wall. "Who's that?" I remember asking. "That's Kevin Keegan. He's the England captain," he said. I've been a Saints fan ever since.

I can remember exactly where I was when we signed KK, walking home from middle school and turning into Dimond Rd, when a random motorist pulled up next to me, wound down his window,  shouted that "Saints have signed Keegan", and sped off. A few minutes later when I arrived home my excited mother couldn't contain herself and gabbled "do you who saints have signed" she was utterly crest fallen, when I gave my answer, a scene that was repeated when Dad came home from work. Poor Mum 😆.

 A true legend of the game. Thanks for the memories.

The football during the two years that Keegan played for Saints was fantastic.  I was a student at this time and saw every home game that I could.

Another excuse to watch Channon's goal against Liverpool, one of Keegan's last games for Saints.  He had four key touches in that goal.  I also remember his first game against Man C in August 1980.  Seem to remember that he ended up in the Milton End at one point chasing a ball.  Another fantastic game.

If it has not already been proposed, can we hope that at the 7th minute of our first home game we in the Northam can initiate a continuous chant of One Kevin Keegan. Get his photo up on the screens and let us show a better salute than a minutes silence or clapping before the game. Get it sorted SFC.

Actually Dave Armstrong was offside right in the middle of the goal but went on to score the winner himself very late in the game. I think the headline was "what a way to say sorry". Either way it was a fabulous "goal" by Keegan.

He obviously had immense talent, but I think what characterised him most was his massive enthusiasm and passion for the game and that he was very much his own man prepared to do his own thing, not what everyone else expected. Hence how he came to sign for us when ballon d'or winner!  And then joined Newcastle when in Div 2. Great character.

Gutted. I grew up in North Wales and at the time he was playing for Liverpool. Went to watch him on a school trip and he became my idol after watching him that day. Didn't really follow a team then and when he went to Southampton later on thats when I became a Saints fan living up in the north. RIP

Like you, I never saw him play for Saints, but loved to hear the stories. Allways liked him as a manager for other teams, and hoped he would manage us when he was active as a manager. Allways seemed like a proper fotballer and a good man - one of the greats. RIP

I met him once to do a short interview when I was younger and he was England manager. He was an absolute gentleman. He could see I was nervous and went out of his way to put me at my ease. I never got to see him play but he was a genuinely lovely man - considerate, funny and kind. RIP.

I wasn’t born when he played for Saints but I always wished he could have been our manager in the late 90s/early 00s. There were always links and I think he could have thrived here.
