Can't argue with JWP's history. He deserves our respect and trust.
At 31, he's still got a couple of decent years to take us back up and then take a coaching role à la Llalana ;-).
He'll have more influence on our game and better chance to actually play than Ori, Theo or Adam ever did. 
I'm not sentimental but this one feels pretty good and at the right time.

Not sure he's the box to box midfielder we're desperate for, but happy to be proved wrong.

I always liked him as an individual and no one can accuse him of not putting a shift in - which hopefully will rub off on others.

Also, with his leadership in the squad there is literally no excuse to ever see shoehorn again!

Brilliant news, signing a player who’s spent his whole career in the premier league, and for a chunk of that time being the most consistent and committed player in a succession of poor and declining Saints squads.

Spors giving the value on and off the pitch. It’s a rinse and repeat of the Romeu, Lallana and Walcott signings all over again.
I do not give a shit how players perform off the pitch.

Not convinced. Liked the way he played for Jones, slightly further forward so wouldn’t be against him slipping into that role at the end of games (as Charles did few times). Could be useful if we’re chasing the game, particularly replacing Bree (again, as Charles did at Leicester). But I don’t think my blood pressure will be able to cope with him coming deep to bounce balls back to the centre halves or full backs.

Although I'm happy about this signing, I'm not hugely encouraged by Spors saying he needs no introduction and will help us on and off the pitch. That's quite a generic description of how he's going to help us. I'd have preferred if he'd gone into some more detail about why we have brought him back and what his role is likely to be on the pitch in a similar to what he said about Schlotterbeck.

That's the problem I have with it. There's no doubt we have signed a quality player for peanuts but my most recent memory of him is me to you to you to me, sideways and backwards. I appreciate that was a product of the system we played then, I just hope his creative side is encouraged in the present set up.

His role is to send quality corners onto the head of Schlotterbeck, help us get promotion and then break Beckhams free-kicks record as a 32 year old, coming on as a sub in the 85th minute on the last day of the season to send Saints into Europe with a double free-kick special against Villa.

Feel good signing that actually, on first glance, makes sense for all parties involved. Excited to see what he brings and hopefully stays forward, as his knack for open play goals was also pretty good

There is no doubt he is still an excellent dead ball specialist. Manning has become extremely important in that regard particularly swinging in dangerous corners into the six yard box from the right hand side - but now having a right footer of - imo- superior quality we have got same for left sided corners and free kicks at the very least. Larin and Schlotterbeck will get great service. That, and he runs all day and rarely gives away possession means we have got ourselves a bargain. Welcome back JWP!

The more I think about the JWP thing, the more I don’t mind it. Need some experience in there and our crossing has been dross this season. Got a few big lumps in the squad to aim at but we never beat the first man. We’ve been struggling to cover the space in the middle this season too without Jander, JWP has got a great engine and will work hard. Experienced pro and good competition for various places in that squad, can only be a good thing IMO. He’ll be desperate to play regularly too after being left out for 2 years under Nuno. 
 

Not the Charles replacement but decent reinforcement nonetheless. Someone for Bragg to learn from and we won’t have to play Matsuki or Akuchukwu out of position there

Welcome back James and crossing my fingers that this move works for you and the club.

Positives, free kicks, stamina, experience and commitment.

Negatives for me are lack of speed to close down or make interceptions or press, we lose the height and power of Charles and JWP does have a tendency to play lots of sideways and backwards passes. I struggle to work out a midfield including James that is not going to get overpowered by more physical sides.

Will be happy if he proves my negatives are unfounded and accept the majority are delighted to have him back.

Hopefully he won't be on corner duty. Last season we were second top in most goals scored from corners. JWP's corners were never great, Bree, Manning and Leo are all delivering better corners right now.

The last two years would have been very painful for JWP. I think this return will ignite a hunger in him, that will benefit us greatly. His experience and understanding also should not be underestimated. At a time we are so clearly lacking on a few crucial elements, adding him to the squad is a massive bonus. 

And as s side note, what a dreadful football week, right up until his announcement. I really needed that.

Does this also mean that the weird clapping and “choo choo” chant is going to start again when he takes free kicks?

I'm not so worried about his physicality in the Championship as many seem to be - imo it's a big step down from the PL in terms of pure speed and power BUT you get a shit ton of niggly dirty physicality instead which hopefully his fitness can deal with. Certainly under Ralph he had that edge to his game and he'll need it. Charles' biggest problems in his game are his slack tracking back / lazy challenges and we know JWP has never lacked for effort at least so that's a + in my book.

I'm hoping he'll be pissed off and with a giant chip on his shoulder after being bombed out the last 2 years by Nuno and absolutely pisses on the league in revenge. Also a free kick hat trick against West Ham + special celebration 🫡🫡

I don't see this as nostalgic, I think in this league it's actually a very good signing.

We know he has a good engine on him, stays fit, can ping in a mean cross\free kick and now has a tonne of experience to draw on.

IMO he should be a top midfielder in the division.

I love Scienza but his corners are terrible.

 

JWP's excellent corners are the one thing Hammers fans have consensus on.

See the video I shared of his first season at WHU, 11 assists and mostly corners. He will be our best free kick and corner taker.

First time around other than Pelle, later on in JWP’s peak he only had the centre backs to aim for, we weren’t a tall side under Ralph. The likes of Coufal enjoyed the deliveries. Has Larin to aim for this time for starters and hopefully another new taller striker to replace Stewart now BBD and DD out/about to be out on loan.

Good signing as stop gap until we get a balanced team. Should bring some experience in positioning and hopefully he will bark instructions to those wandering around not watching the ball and player.

A risk, but a cheap one, and unlike one or two of the others who returned, this one feels like it has a genuine chance of success, had he gone anywhere else it would have felt like we'd missed out.

Welcome home, now please could you bang in a free-kick and blow the roof off St Mary's.
