Newcastle 3-1 Saints - Reaction

The Bournemouth match is key for us to get necessary points, hopefully no shocks tomorrow Cardiff v Liverpool as then Cardiff have 2 winnable matches.

I expect the Watford game to go much like today's and after Bournemouth we have a difficult West Ham away. We don't want to go into a nervy Huddersfield game having to get a point or three, while Cardiff go for it at home against United.

I'm an 'until it's mathematically impossible type' person, unfortunately.

I'm not trolling. Sadly, I don't see us getting anything at Watford. Next week we've got a tough game against Bournemouth which I could see being a draw. Cardiff will beat Fulham and I can see Brighton beating Newcastle, which puts us right back in the ****. It's going to go to the final day. Why we can't just put these things to bed so that we can enjoy the final few games I'll never know? Southampton FC, making things difficult for themselves since 1885. ;-)

The bookies are NEVER wrong. Ever

Ignore Leicester 5000/1 odds

No panic here, but let's get mathematically safe quickly.

No one is saying that bookies are "NEVER wrong". We are saying that 150/1 odds are super long and it isn't worth worrying too much about something that has less than a 1% chance of happening. Obviously there will be times when things with long odds happen but that isn't the bookies being wrong, that's how statistics work. If things with 5000/1 odds happen more than 5000 times then it likely that the thing will happen atleast once. I don't even necessarily disagree with the wait till we are mathematically safe thought, I just don't like it when people consider things with long odds happening as the odds being "wrong", it's basic conformation bias.

Bournemouth is no tougher than Wolves, which we won. Fulham beat them yesterday yet you think they'll lose to Cardiff. Brighton haven't won in five and gave scored none in three. We found Newcastle difficult, but you somehow think Brighton can beat them.

I think you need to try harder, with considerably more logic.

You are so depressingly negative about everything Saints that Most people must wonder why you bother to come on here at all.

We lost a game, we can't win them all. Get over it. One or two players let us down badly today when Ralph had put his trust in them, it happens. We're already safe anyway so why worry ... be Happy!

How much is an Arsenal season ticket?

Ultimately it was the absence of two key defenders which turned the match in favour of Newcastle. J-WP is not a right back, he lacks the pace and Sims ahead of him made our right flank the weak spot which Newcastle exploited. Benitez is a clever old dog, but it didn't take a genius to work out where we were vulnerable. We also missed Vestergaard too and had they both played, it is not inconceivable that Newcastle's goals would have been better defended by us.

The first half was Newcastle's, but the second half was certainly ours and we dominated them without having the ability to put the ball in the net more than the once. Hasenhuttl's substitutions were spot on at half time, both Armstrong and Lemina making an immediate impact, shoring up the midfield, taking the pressure away from the defence by winning the majority of the 50/50 balls and forcing Newcastle onto the back foot. Lemina's goal was very well taken, giving us hope that we could turn the match around, but although we had several chances to level things up, we had a succession of shots over, wide, or well saved by their keeper.

I'm not sure why Vestergaard and Valery were out and hope that they will soon be back. But it will have become clear to Hasenhuttl that had we started the match with Armstrong and Lemina we were a team with some bite and with hindsight, Sims would be a better late substitute. I also wonder what he would think about midfield options that now include Lemina, as well as Armstrong, Romeu and Hojbjerg? It remains the defence and the striker where we are short not the midfield.

Yoshida is long overdue for a goal. He has been a real presence up top at set pieces and has been unlucky not have scored at least one today.

Poor from us, the most Hughes like performance under Hasenhuttl. If you don't play with intensity then you just won't compete at PL level, especially away.

Key points:

1. Sims poor, doesn't do the basics well enough. For me not a starting player

2. JWP is poor at RB/RWB - not quick enough

3. Stephens is done

4. Lemina back the only positive - great goal and adds mobility

5. If Cardiff lose tomorrow then any points vs Bmth should keep us up. Want to get those points as soon as possible as it could get squeaky again otherwise.

Just a bad day at the office given how well we’ve done lately, I don’t ever expect us to come back from SJP with anything to be honest.

Ralph will still take a lot from this game though hopefully - like the fact that Stephens should never wear a Saints shirt again, Yoshida nice bloke that he is will only be good enough for 3rd choice CB as he was under Poch and Koeman, and JWP is still only an average Premier League footballer.

Fair enough, but you're only looking at it one way. Bournemouth is a derby. A very different type of fixture to playing Wolves. Cardiff look like they've got a bit of fight in them. Fulham have had a couple of decent results of late but they're already down, so yes, I do think Cardiff will beat them. Brighton haven't won in five but that can't go on forever. They have the home advantage and strange things happen. Yes, I could see them beating Newcastle.

Only time will tell but I'd certainly have a few quid on Cardiff and Brighton winning next week.

Yoshida was shocking at the back and up front, Ings was no better.

Why we are still suicidal on our own corners?

Gunn had no chance on the goals as they were lucky, Lemina was pretty good.

JWP has been poor for us since his England return and finally Redmond was also pants today.

At least JWP did to Almiron what someone should have done to Salah. Same result in the end, though. Gunn should never have had to make that brilliant save. Romeu was unlucky to get a yellow card for the player who pulled his ham string. Good pressure second half but not enough to make up for the outmuscled first half. Similar game to last season’s.

Ralph Hasenhuttl admitted that Saints’ first half performance at Newcastle was the worst 45 minutes of his time in charge and insisted the team are “still in trouble.”

Keep this in perspective, we were never going to win every game in the run in !

Sure, we were dire in the first half but showed a lot of spirit and energy in the second and with a couple of breaks could perhaps have turned it around !

The pressure is still on but we have enough about us to secure a few more points which can keep us up !!

As things stand, the position is little different than it was before today, except there is one less game for the others to catch us up. OK if Cardiff get something from the Scousers that might put a different perspective on it, but really don't think they will. Really shouldn't have expected anything today if we are honest. Ralph ****ed up with his changes, specifically playing Bednarek on the right and playing JWP as RWB or whatever he was. OK, the performance first half was a shambles, don't think it will happen again, and Valery and Vestegaard will be back. Move on, nothing to see here.

Exactly- he's saying what he's said to focus a few minds, get the point or two we need and then it's job done.

Yes we're still in a position where we need to be careful, but there's a reason the bookies are putting us at 150-1 despite a few wallies reckoning we're going down.

As others said poor first half, good 2nd half. Had the chances to equalise but missed them all. Yosh the main culprit yesterday for a goal conceded and missing a hat-trick of golden chances.

Lemina is class, missed him and that goal was a superb finish. Play like we did second half for the rest of the season will demolish some team at some point - I'm going for Huddersfield at home last game of the season.

We seemed unprepared in the 1st half for playing on a pitch where the grass was left so long.

Shades of wGS leaving it long for that victory against manure a few years ago.

It meant that sims, redmond etc could not run with the ball and our tactics of playing with pace on the break were completely nullified. Their tactics of playing it long and feeding off the knockdowns from our defenders were more suited to the surface.

I thought that in the NC days were we going to build 6 training pitches that matched the opposition conditions so we were prepared for playing on surfaces like that?

Or did Ralph not check out the pitch when they arrived a few hours earlier before selecting the starting 11. It would have taken only a few mins to realise the grass was long and that Sims, Redmond etc were going to have zero impact in the game. And that passing out from the back was always going to be high risk (1st goal).

Agreed. Blimey, those ‘shots’ from Redmond where he curses his luck, as the ball sails into the upper stands. Lemonade was only real bright spark. Centre of midfield looked hugely disjointed. How is Vestergard’s injury?

We were poor on the first half and struggled against a team pressing and giving us no time. In that scenario Sims didn't perform and JWP isn't a RB.

The positives are that Ralph made the right changes at HT. Armstrong is a much more solid, experienced complete player than Sims and we needed another body in midfield. And secondly, until their third which was a combination if a weak defensive header (should have put it out) and a lucky defection, we looked like getting a draw. We made chances. Yoshida could have had a hat trick.

Watford will be tough too, but they have less to play for. Also hope Valery and Vestergaard are back.

Haven't seen the highlights yet but from where I was standing it looked like the ball had clearly gone out of play in the build up to their second goal. Did they pick that up on MOTD?

It's disappointing we didn't get anything because we certainly had the chances in the 2nd half but we gave ourselves too much to do with that poor 1st half display. T

They only got into our box 3 times in the 2nd half. First time they hit the post, second time it took a wonder save from Gunn after a tricky deflection, and the third time they scored. Frustrating, but thems the breaks - it was the other way round when we beat Wolves last week.

It will still take a pretty unlikely collapse in form for us to go down from here, so I'm not too worried. I didn't have this one down as a must-win game anyway.

Being suuuuuper generous here...

Cardiff will get another 7 points (beating Fulham, Palace and a draw against Man U)

Brighton will get another 3 or 4 points (beating Newcastle and maybe picking up a lucky point elsewhere)

Worst case scenario we would then need two draws or just one win from Watford, Bournemouth, West Ham and Huddersfield to stay up. Yeh, we're not going down.

It’s not quite as simple as that

They have these things called lawn mowers.

Ralph checks the grass and picks his “long grass 11”. After handing the team sheet in, the cunning Spaniard pops into the Groundsman’s hut and tells Groundsman Bob to fire up his mower. The upshot is Newcastle have their short grass team whilst we are floundering around with long grass specialists.

They could even double bluff us, with Groundsman Bob sat on his mower going up and down the pitch. Ralph thinks “short grass team”, however the cutters are raised too high to cut the grass and again Ralph gets it wrong.

What that i'm confident we'll get more points that Cardiff or Brighton? I just thing we've got an easier set of fixtures..& we are a far superior team. I think it's bizarre that so many posters are saying 'oooh we could go down" If we were in Brighton or Cardiffs position everyone on here would be saying...'That's it we're f*cked' I just see zero risk even if Cardiff win today.

Nothing to do with any of that. Just that anyone could want a result that clearly doesn't benefit Saints.

It comes to something when hatred for another team counts for more than support for the team of whom you're allegedly a fan.

Correct. Not one of these loons cra pping themselves about our imminent relegation would think we were any safer if we were in Cardiff's position.

Unless anyone wants to step forward and say they would happily swap with Cardiff and take their squad, points, run-in and goal difference over ours. One at a time now.

WTF do they do all week. That was a self inflicted defeat brought on by stupidity by international players that would struggle to make up a brain between them. First goal, Yoshida passes to Hojbjerg who is instantly closed down and loses the ball. When in doubt in those positions hit the front men. I've lost count of the tippy tappy stupidity outside our box that has led to goals.

Second goal, lost the ball out on the touch line, Perez 10 yds behind Bertrand, Perez busts a gut to get to the cross whilst Bertrand on reaching the penalty area slows up and Perez gets past him. Bertrand would have got there first if he had kept going.

Third goal Bednarek like Yoshida last week aimlessly heads the ball straight out and again we get punished.

JWP is a very limited midfielder who lacks pace and is no full back. We played three up front and were playing Puel / Pellegrino football out of defence instead of hitting them early. We paid the penalty.

Better 2nd half, but the damage was already done. To suggest we are now getting relegated is ridiculous. We will pick up some points in the two remaining home games. And Cardiff will do well to even get 5 points; they certainly won't get any today.

Nice that Ralph made no excuses and admitted it wasn't good enough. He's done his best with the squad available. It's all about who we can bring in this summer. Its fine margins in this league so there's a chance to sort out the squad and push for top half next season.

I'm writing the 1st half performance up to "it happens", and it does to every squad (look at ManU today at the Toffees). The 2nd half was much better. This was always going to be a tough match. No one wins all the time, lets just move on

As nobody else wishes to comment on it, then yes, it appears that the ball had indeed gone well over the line, so should have been a goal kick. Everybody around me asked whether the lino was blind, as he was in line with it.

Are you confusing this with the moment in the second half where Gunn made a very good save after a horrible deflection?

What I was referring to was the ball going out of touch on their left before the ball was crossed in for Perez. Looked like it was a good foot over the line to me and everyone around me.

Or they could give it the Mullet Mow (long down the sides and short up top) or the Brazilian (tightly cropped flanks with growth up the middle).

Some people say you shouldn’t try to guess the grass before a match but it’s those 1%s that make the difference.
