Mads Roerslev Rasmussen is a Danish professional footballer who primarily plays as a **right-back** or **right wing-back**. His playing style and attributes make him a versatile and dynamic defender, well-suited to modern football's demands for full-backs. Below is an overview of the type of footballer Roerslev is, based on available information about his career and characteristics:

### Playing Style and Attributes

  - **Versatility**: Capable of playing as a right-sided centre-back in a back three, as demonstrated during the 2021–22 season when injuries forced positional adjustments at Brentford. He has also occasionally filled in as a more advanced right midfielder or wing-back due to his offensive capabilities.[](https://nl.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mads_Roerslev)[](https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mads_Roerslev)

- **Work Rate and Team Role**:

  - Roerslev is a hardworking, team-oriented player who often steps up when first-choice players (e.g., Aaron Hickey or Henrik Dalsgaard) are unavailable due to injury or departure. After limited appearances and loans to Halmstads BK and Vendsyssel FF, he joined Brentford in 2019, initially with their B team, before breaking into the first team. He was part of Brentford’s squad that earned promotion to the Premier League in 2021.[](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mads_Roerslev)[](https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mads_Roerslev)

### Football Manager and Gaming Insights

- In **EA FC 25**, he has an overall rating of 73, with 3 skill moves and a 3-star weak foot, indicating decent technical ability for a full-back.[](https://sofifa.com/player/238157/mads-roerslev/?hl=en-US)[](https://www.fifacm.com/player/238157/mads-roerslev)

- **Defensive Reliability**: Strong in one-on-one situations and tactically disciplined.

- **Resilience**: Overcame early career setbacks (limited minutes at FC Copenhagen, loans) to become a Premier League regular.

### Weaknesses

- **Limited Goal Threat**: Primarily an assist provider rather than a goal scorer, with only one Premier League goal as of 2025.[](https://nl.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mads_Roerslev)

- **Squad Player Role**: Often a backup to first-choice right-backs like Aaron Hickey, which limits his consistent starting opportunities.[](https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mads_Roerslev)

- **Injury History**: Missed four months of the 2020–21 season due to a metatarsal injury, though he has since maintained better fitness.[](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mads_Roerslev)

### Summary

Mads Roerslev is a **modern, dynamic right-back** with a blend of offensive flair and defensive solidity. His ability to deliver crosses, engage in one-on-one duels, and adapt to various roles (right-back, wing-back, or centre-back) makes him a reliable team player for clubs like Brentford and, more recently, VfL Wolfsburg. His high work rate, energy, and tactical flexibility align with the demands of Premier League and Bundesliga football, though he remains more of a facilitator than a star performer.

Southampton Football Club is delighted to announce the signing of Mads Roerslev from Brentford on a four-year deal.

A Denmark international, Roerslev scored on his first-team debut as a 17-year-old for FC Copenhagen back in 2016, before signing for Brentford three years later.

He spent six years with the Bees, helping the club achieve promotion to the Premier League in his second season, a campaign in which he made 22 appearances and assisted the second goal in a 2-0 win over Swansea in the 2021 Championship play-off final.

A right-sided player primarily used at full-back or wing-back, he has played 94 games in the Premier League over the past four seasons, helping Brentford establish themselves as a top-flight club, taking his overall tally to 146 appearances for the West London

side.

There's no mention of price anywhere, so it's fair to assume he was cheap.

But looks a good fit for the team. It also probably means that Sugawara is off.

More likely that Bree is off, Still has been using Sugawara so would likely trust him we backup.

Four year deal, why?

He's not good enough for the Prem, that's unlikely to change.

Signed for the season after next, innit... ;)

Bree is injured, so can't be used.

Even more reason to keep Sugawara, surely? Who is backup if Mads gets injured, THB? Great.

General consensus among Brentford fans so far is that he works hard and will be decent at this level but struggled in the Premier League.

Marvelous 🤦🏻

Thanks Mads. Honest player with sound technique and a wicked cross. Mister dependable. Understated and underrated. Will be a real asset for Saints.

Good luck to the lad, always gave 100%

A fantastic player who.never gave up, alwats gave everything he had and was a credit to the club.
I will keep a keen eye on him as its my local club

Will never beat that day at Wembley and the countless times TF deployed him to mark out a tricky winger from the top 6!

Glad he's got himself a decent move.
As others have said, one of the good guys. Liked Mads. 😐
And sad to see another one of the PL promotion team gone....🙁
He'll always be remembered for that assist at Wembley.....❤️

As others have mentioned before, gauging the view of the fans he's leaving is often a good indication of the player and person he is. No faults to be seen with this one.

Nearly 100 Premier League appearances suggests he might be.

Could be Bednarek in right back form but that isn’t necessarily a bad thing considering expectations for the next 3-4 years.

Brentford fans on their forum seem to think he is good enough for the prem (not a surprise given he's played there over 100 times) and originally thought he would sign for one of the newly promoted teams.

Edwards can play there but Bree is due back in training next week.

The club would get more money for selling Sugawara as well so I very much doubt Bree will be going anywhere.

Edit - just realized Bree is out of contract at the end of the season. Wonder if the club will actually try and move him on now or just keep him as back up and run down his contract.

He’s 27, to sign him he isn’t going to agree to a 2 year deal….and he was seemingly happy to be a squad player for Brentford and played 94 games in the premier league.

Bree is returning to training next week according to Still in today's presser. I'm much happier keeping him as backup than Suga.

He'll be better than Suga, that's all that matters.

Not a hint then a really solid signing, boom 👍🏼 He's played a lot of games in the Prem for a very decent Brentford side, what's not to like?

*Edit* I would assume that means one of Bree or Suga is off, presumably Suga, but who on earth is gonna buy him?
