Bruno Fernandes has been described as the "Portuguese James Ward-Prowse" on Football365: https://www.football365.com/news/16-conclusions-manchester-united-1-tottenham-6-solskjaer-mourinho-kane?utm_source=vuukle&utm_medium=talk_of_town

Anyone know what it means? Didn't sound complimentary in light of Utd's 6-1 thrashing by Spurs.

Great technique, underated and considered light weight by those outside the club?

Where is that in the article?

I'd presume basically they are getting at a set piece specialist that doesn't offer much else, but that is wholly ignorant of what JWP does for our team and just inaccurate about Fernandes.

I do find it quite hilarious the comparisons of reactions with our 9-0 and these two big clubs getting thrashed, for us it seemed to be laugh at little ol' Southampton and lets mention it for the rest of time. For a club like Man Utd there is all this anger and shouting like its an insult they should ever lose a game this badly.

Yes - what a player he has turned into.  ANd to think so many wanted to sell him off saying he wasn't good enough: in his own way he is just as good as MLT.  HIm and Romeu in the middle control games these days

"So many"...? You sure it wasn't the usual handful of SWF doom and gloom merchants?

Yes, and among the 'so many' was Mark Hughes who often had him on the bench and who preferred Hoedt to Bednarek

It does feel like getting a free kick in that sort of area is as good as winning a penalty these days.

Sinisa Mihalovic (if you know your 90's Italian football) used to regard a direct freekick as a chance to score equivalent to a penalty kick. Just ocasionally I'd like to see him bend one into the other corner just to keep the keeper on their toes.

He does have previous in doing so.

Away to West Brom in the Pellegrino season (shudder) he had one in a very similar position to the second one yesterday and scored by going low to the keepers side.

I was expecting him to hit the second one low to the keeper's left yesterday.

I would imagine he decides witch side to shoot after he see's the position of the keeper and wall.

Imagine JWP and Grealish in the same England team. Grealish can keep falling over on the edge of the penalty area, something he does very well, thereby completely fooling the referee into giving a free kick and JWP can bang in the free kick. It's a World Cup winning formula!!!!

7 more FK's in the EPL to match Beckham....can he do it?

Well his conversion ratio is currently at 12% (best in Prem history!) But I'd say he's improved since he first started taking them, so he needs another 90 direct freekicks in his career to be able to overtake Beckham I wager.

Not sure I'd go as far to say he is just as good as MLT...

To be honest he has taken his game to a new level under Hasenhuttl. Of course he's never been a bad player, but before Ralph arrived he always struck me as a bit of a 'nearly man'. He'd nearly close down the shot, he'd nearly make the challenge etc. He's always had a good delivery, but even his direct free kicks nearly went in.

That has changed now of course!

I agree with that. For me, the main difference is that he's found a position and grown into it. In the past he's been played out wide where he hasn't had the pace, played inside where he's not been strong / tenacious enough, or as a 10 which isn't really his position. Ralph has shown faith in him in the middle, given him consistent games there and he's become one hell of a player.

He was always a MC, just was not physical enough in his early years for that position, he played well under puel in CM and pellegino got him self called upto the England team, just a shame Puels football was poor and pellegrino well less said about his time here the better, although mainly used out wide for Poch and all over mid field for RK he still played resonably well for his age and always did what was expected of him.

Has always been under rated by some of his own fans, other fans have always appreciated him more, Pundits too, have had many dicusions on here in the past with this forums critics claming he would never be any thing more than league 1 at best...

fast forward a couple of years......he is now one of the best DM's in the league, and one of the best set piece takers in the world? and valued at the same as Ings....

And managers.

Let's not forget Hughes treatment of him. He was about to ship him off to Watford for £15m.

Without defending Hughes or the fans that slated him, don't forget RH left him out f his squad against Cardiff and it took commitment and hard work from WP (and great coaching) to get back in to the team and develop to where he is now.

I generally side with giving players time, but I would have sold him to Watford to fund other signings. He'd had a lot of time and I didn't think he was ever going to kick on.

I would have been wrong of course, though the fact that it was only Watford that were interested suggests other clubs may have felt the same.

If he had gone to Watford then perhaps he wouldn't have kicked on because he wouldn't have had Ralph's coaching

A shrewd call to make him captain as well. I think his game has improved enormously since he was made captain, and he seems to be handling the extra responsibility well and seems to have galvanized the players around him as well. He seems level headed, polite intelligent and his interviews are very good. If he can become a regular England starter then maybe Southgate will recognise this and hand him the England armband as well. That would surely be a feather in the cap for Saints. One would imagine his value has already soared in recent times as well.

He's already been a first team player for 9 years , if he can keep this up there is no doubt ward prowse will be talked about as a legend, club captain, England international, if he can captain us to some silverware then don't rule out having a statue in his honour next to Ted.

I think your sums is bad. If he has improved then maybe scores 1 in 6?   45 more will see him overtake Beckham.

He has developed an edge to his game now, which I think has helped him, a slight touch of the cockiness you see the top players have also on the pitch. Off the pitch he still seems like a thoroughly decent lad, but on the pitch he doesn’t get bullied anymore. The Zaha windups a clear sign of this, which he would not have done in past years prior. Even on Sunday he had a few words with Cash after he left a tackle on him before slotting the free-kicks. Long may he continue.

Ward Prowse should be the first choice CM in the midfield oairing for England without debate. Every game he is looking better and better. Can’t think if another English CM than him at the moment.heart beat I’d our side.

imagine the euros next summer if Southgate had the balls play Kane and Ings in a pair with JWP pulling the string s from midfield. As a saints fan that would be the dream!

good, give him a rest and a bit of treatment instead of travelling all over Europe to sit on a bench and get maybe a half here or there. Who the hell would want to go to Albania to play against Iceland.....just scrap it ffs, its meaningless.

Probably a good thing for us, have a proper break and don't waste time travelling around taking unnecessary risks, hopefully he'll be fit for the Wolves game.

Ward-prowse is bound to be disappointed though, he would have likely got one or two more caps and there are no more internationals until March.

My bosses are not forcing me to go out anywhere - if I make the decision to do so, as the result will pay my bills - they let me out reluctantly as they see me as an asset. Likewise JWP is hot property and an asset for the club, if a bit of chicanery is seeing him stay at home its not a surprise (even more so if it looks like he will be there as a tourist on the bench), especially as they play a team that has a random and little known strain of Covid from their farmed Mink population in their country which is destined to be destroyed as a result...................I wonder if there will be a glut of cheap Astrakhan hats flooding the market as a result: great to wear at game in the middle of January.

Good that he gets a rest but bad in the sense that JWP is one of the few players that you can imagine really would not want to withdraw from a squad at this point...so it must be troubling him.

Doubt he's worried about England. Won't get much, if any game time as he's a good player from a "little" club rather than a crap one from a "big" club.

Quick question for stattos on here, or at least those with better memories. Did JWP miss a freekick between his Villa goals and his United one, or was it 3 in a row? Obviously not including those he crossed/didn't go for goal before MLG jumps in....

Yeah, bet his conversion rate is ridiculous over the last 12 months. It's basically a pen when he gets it from there now.
