John Boy Saint Posted May 16 Posted May 16 A few folk showing their age on here with tales of the good old bad days of football - for folks who never experienced it you could start a recollection with the opening words of the Roy Batty monologue in the original Blade Runner “I’ve seen things you people wouldn’t believe…”. By contrast the last time I went to Goodison we parked for free on the road out of Liverpool near where Everton Ladies currently play at home, after seeing locals park there “you’ll be fine here, we’ve parked here for years” said an Everton Dad and his daughter, all locked up we said we would follow them as they know the way “we’re not going to the ground yet, we’re going to the pub” like we said you know the way 😁! They took us into the Pub, where even there was friendly. Walking to the ground another conversation with a group of “lads” all fascinated to hear what other away games we had been to especially the league one grounds. On the drive home, with us all being in our 50’s, we did comment what a nice time we had (despite the loss) against the backdrop of playing dodge the flying bottle going to footie in our teens. Right - carry on 😁 2

The only time I've been worried was at Alan Knight's testimonial, and having to dodge lumps of concrete lobbed over the wall.. My last away match was Sheffield Wednesday last season where I combined it with a trip to northern friends and it was a very relaxed atmosphere with some interesting chats with local fans who even gave me a lift back to my lodgings. I might try another trip north this season depending on early fixtures: when are they out? 1
whelk Posted May 16 Posted May 16 Going to this one and cannot recall a game I cared less about the result. Saturday night in Liverpool is the appeal though. Disappointed that seems like won’t have the additional entertainment of watching scousers loot Goodison. 1

Gutted at the result even at that age, in 1986 at WHL we hadn’t been expected to beat Liverpool, but in 1984 we were favourites with our best ever side. The 1980-82 had more flair but was suspect away from home. Apparently there was literally rivers of urine streaming down the aisles of the North Bank? Think that was Orient away in the FA Cup following year. Was disgustingly literally packed like sardines you couldn’t move and underneath you the urine was flowing. We won though! 1

You mentioning that - we went to Man City and conveniently my sister lives in Glossop, as did my mates boss who was a City fan - parked at my Sisters and met his boss and family in a Glossop Pub then on the train to Manchester, mates boss saw safe entry into the City fans pub/club .- After the match stood on the platform at the local station no end of City fans “you know you’re on the wrong side for Piccadilly!” The confused looks when we said we were going to Glossop was quite amusing - even more so when those who asked why tried to figure out how someone with a sister in Glossop ended up as a Southampton fan.

I live in a PO post code and get asked that in the pub when I'm watching Saints on the box. The concept of family having moved around the country (and to other countries) escapes some of them. 1

I certainly had a bit of trouble outside the ground on the way to the match by that bridge. Me and a mate got swarmed by a bunch of right geezers. I’d made the ( mistake in retrospect) decision to wear my cutaway jean jacket with saints crest on it hells angel style plus other saints badges ( it was considered football supporter edgy stylish /bovver trendy then, I know I know..) so I was a walking target. I thought “ it’s only Orient “ but yes, of course it was open season on saints fans that day and I’d put a target on my back. Naive or what! Or just stupid fearless youth I guess 🤣. As for West Ham Iirc have had interesting differences of opinion with them both in the Archers and at Upton Park. They are still one of my favourites though because as far as I’m concerned they are still a relatively authentic club, well most of the support is. 1
BotleySaint Posted May 16 Posted May 16 They couldn't ask for an easier game really. Having now beaten the Derby record to proudly become the second worst team in Premier League history I fully expect our players to down tools and be focusing on their holidays/next clubs.

LGTL Posted May 16 Author Posted May 16 There are a few funny outcomes. Obviously winning/drawing, but also the chance for someone like Ryan Manning or Will Smallbone to score the last ever goal there. 1
ErwinK1961 Posted May 16 Posted May 16 We’re more than capable of being shite and bending over for Everton to have a fairytale ending on our own, but there’s not a chance we’re going to be allowed to get a result here.

Turkish Posted May 16 Posted May 16 A 1-0 win for Saints with the winner a header 3 minutes from the the end. you heard it here first 1

Funniest bit of the day was seeing the cocky hard men run towards us then when they realised the DEF were in the Saints end they suddenly got stuck behind the invisible barriers that shot up out of no where classic “hold me back” stuff from the ICF. Earlier that day we’d bumped into a few of their main faces and given them a pass as they only had 150 against our 40 so decided with those odds they had no chance only for them to wait for a police escort into their own ground whilst they bounced around in it tell us what they were going to do to the DEF f only they hadn’t got wrapped up. guess it’s the original question of the Gorrila v 100 men thing today who wins, 1 DEF member or 100 normal hooligans. 1

Don’t remember any issues with West Ham at Brisbane Road itself . In 1978 though it was rumoured that Spurs would ‘turn up’ as they were competing with us for automatic promotion. The West Ham story I remember, possibly from that Orient match, is that they attacked a tube containing loads of Saints fans as it went through a known station on ‘their turf’. Recall hearing of windows being smashed and bricks, bottles and a broom handle following it in.
LiberalCommunist Posted Saturday at 16:17 Posted Saturday at 16:17 Hoping we can crash the party. Its going to be a very emotional day for the blues, be great to nip in a steal the points. 1
woodsaint1 Posted Saturday at 22:33 Posted Saturday at 22:33 We're not winning this, but I would laugh my balls off if the last competitive game at Goodison was a 0-0 borefest
coalman Posted Sunday at 06:39 Posted Sunday at 06:39 The occasion will get to Everton and they'll wind up playing at the same level as Saints. We have more experience being shit at football and that will carry us through. 1

macca155 Posted Sunday at 09:52 Posted Sunday at 09:52 Good to see Wood in the team. Some of his performances have been quite reasonable, better than ABK. He doesn't shirk away from the battle and we'll need him next year. Disappointed Stewart isn't playing from the start. He seems to be moving through the gears now.
BARCELONASAINT Posted Sunday at 10:07 Posted Sunday at 10:07 I have a horrible feeling we will give the tabloid press all the headlines they crave for Evertons last game at their horrible ground in an absolutely equally horrible area!
austsaint Posted Sunday at 10:12 Posted Sunday at 10:12 Surprised Aribo is starting ahead of Ugochukwu.

SNSUN Posted Sunday at 10:46 Posted Sunday at 10:46 Im just numb from this season. Just so hard to care. That said, it would be great to do Everton at their place just to ruin the party. That line up though. 🙄 I'm not looking forward to seeing the starting line up first game of next season... but that's a worry for much later down the line.
