I don’t socialise at games. I watch them.

Christ, you must have been bored shitless the last 18 months.

It’s the beers and post-match events that get me through. Regardless, it’s not been easy. But since when has being a saints fan been anything other than?

rumour has it selles set up the team that game…

Suspect using simple deductive logic it is more than a rumour. Here is the deductive logic every other game under Nathan Jones was a disaster class from start to finish. Yet miraculously we beat City. Albeit City failed to show up, doubt we will see that again in the premier game, lightning rarely strikes twice.

Yes because everything we know about Nathan Jones tells us he would happily sit back and let an assistant he's never worked with before take control of the team set up on his first meeting with one of the greatest managers of all time. He was a passive, let others take control type of person wasn't he?

Utterly moronic if you believe that tosh.

Well maybe you are right, maybe the statistically best manger in Europe had a sudden impulse to change the personnel and tactics completely from all the previous Southampton games he was in charge as a one off experiment, then reverted back to his game plan afterwards including another disaster class for the next round of the EFL? Or perhaps was forced into it by resting players for PL games and got lucky. We will probably never know for sure, until JWP's tell all biography comes out 😃.

But go with me here which would be more surprising that he did that entirely of his own volition, or that he consulted with his chief coach who had been coaching the squad for longer and new the squad better? Maybe Jones was willing to listen to others, in which case that makes Jones a bit less of a moron than you, don't you think?

We won all 3 games that week including one before the City game. There was no sudden impulse to change tactics or reverting of game plans but shock horror a game in the middle of the week and between 2 others including one against relegation rivals a couple of days later did involve some change of personnel and even more of a shock a game against one of the best sides in country meant we had a different plan to the ones against Palace and Everton.

But yeah, some weird conspiracy theory that for a reason nobody has explained yet, Jones thought ‘ah go on Ruben, I’ve just picked up my first win and we have a massive game at the weekend, but you take charge of this one fella.’ probably feels much more logical.

Big Paul up front ...Orsic , Sulemana  either side ...Alcaraz, Lavia , Prowse ,...Kwp, Caleta car , Bednerak,Perraud,....Bazunu.       No chance of this happening though !  Be a boring and defensive team again !

Any team that lines up with DCC and Bednarek at this level is getting thumped sadly.

Ultimately we don’t deserve to stay up. We’re bottom for a reason.

We don’t fight against the teams we should be beating, but for some reason we’ll give our all not to get smashed by the bigger teams and suddenly pull out s result.

It would be very Saintsy for us to get a scrappy backs to the wall 1-0 win this evening and then lose 1-0 at home to Palace next week.
Kind of sums our season up.

It’s the hope that kills you. Either put in a shift every game for the rest of the season or don’t bother at all and get it done and dusted either way. 🤣

All the great performances were because of Erwin Koeman and all the terrible ones were down to Ronald.

Sold out, apparently. I think we all know why that is.

What sign are you taking? I've gone a bit more obscure because everyone else will be asking for Haaland, De Bruyne, Grealish etc.

Mine says "Nathan can I have your shirt. It would Make my day."

Man City are all hype.

Haaland is bang average, he's no good in the air and too easily knocked off the ball, he's just not strong enough for the Premier League - he's like a slow Adam Armstrong without the football brain.

As for De Bruyne, Grealish and Foden, they have no end product so it's easy to defend, you just need to back off them and let them run at you, they rarely create anything.

Comfortable home win, hopefully the nurses will let me watch it.

Man City fans do love to bang on about their crowd being 'proper mancs' unlike United but that's already now just a distant memory. Only a few years back you'd have been hard pushed to see anyone wearing a city top down south, now you see kids...and grown men...in shirts all over.

They'll no doubt be City fans in the home stands tonight but they won't be from Manchester, they'll be their 'new fans' from around the south. My niece's nipper is a classic example. Him and his mates at school were big Saints fans not long ago, he's now 'City', his mates are a mixture of big club fans, "Saints are shit". 5 years of being mostly shit does that to kids when they're taking stick at school by others that have already fallen by the wayside. Another lost generation of young fans.

I blame the parents.

Have to say my kids friends are mostly Saints fans. Any time we get a result against a bigger club I ask if they know any fans of that team and the answer is normally no, although I met a kid recently who apparently supports Saints and Man City!

I remember plenty of Liverpool fans down south in the 80's and then Man Utd fans in the 90's. Some kids will just want to support a successful team to bask in the reflective glory. Probably to cover up their own insecurities or something. No doubt they'll get shit from the Saints fans they know calling them glory hunters or whatever. They have no answer to that.

This is part of the reason I love our club despite all the shit that goes with it. I’d hate to become a club loved by everyone (or anyone as it is now!).

Agree, and some of the teachers! They come from all over and give the kids grief for supporting their local club as much as the glory-hunting plastics.

One of the percs of the Nathan Jones "era" (2 months). He was a right c*unt who made a lot of clubs hate us. Sadly, he became so unlikeable even we ended up hating him but thats besides the point.

These are the games we often look better in, mainly because they won't sit back and force us to play in front of them - there will be space to play in the final third, and because of that it will create the illusion that we look better than we actually are. (not that we'll do anything with that space, mind)

What’s the betting Elyounoussi starts….

Almost certainly. Which is OK as I'd rather we brought Sullemana on from the bench.

Having said that though, won't Moi be fasting? Maybe Selles will drop him if he doesn't think he'll have the energy levels for the full 90.

Not a Moi fan myself, but from an off the ball point of view he has his uses today, as he's a bit more disciplined than our other attackers. Not great mind you, as when we do get a random foray in their half we do need to have someone with the ability to create something!

I still think Moi playing in a three in the midfield would be best suited to him.

In the real world everyone recognises we have absolutely no chance of getting anything from today's match... except that a battling performance, low scoreline and maybe even a goal could all give us some encouragement for the remaining fixtures.

Of course, every now and then a side near the bottom will pull of a surprise result against a top team and I'm sure we all hope and dream that today might be that day for us - even if in our heart of hearts we all know it won't happen! Nevertheless, the dream is nice!!!

What is perhaps slightly more significant on a day like today is what will happen in the other matches. If other teams around us also do badly, a narrow defeat against City won't be the end of the world. Whereas if the teams with whom we are competing to avoid relegation get good results and we get hammered the despondency around Saints will grow and the task will seem even more impossible.

Hopefully, other results will go our way:

  • Man Utd must surely beat Everton - I say it will be 2-0.
  • Villa are on form, Forest dropping like a stone so that won must surely end in a big win for Villa - I say 3-0 to Villa.
  • Fulham v West Ham is much less clear-cut with Fulham's form dipping while West Ham's win against us gave them hope (that was fortunately smashed away by their midweek defeat) - I predict 1-1 but a win for Fulham would be great.
  • Leicester v Bournemouth is obviously of major interest and I fear we don't want either club to gain any confidence from it. A 0-0 draw with dodgy defending, poor finishing and crowd discontent from both sets of supporters would be great. I'm not sure it will be quite as a good an outcome as that but a 1-1 draw seems a realistic result.
  • Wolves v Chelsea is hard to predict but hopefully Chelsea will demonstrate a new manager bounce and perform for Lampard. I'm going for 1-2 to Chelsea.

With all those scorelines, we could go into our game against City knowing that whatever the result we will not be set adrift... at least not yet!

Agree on both counts. And that’s the massive frustration. At WHU last Sunday he made one fantastic defensive recovery run and blocked would have been a decent opportunity. But in the final third….🤦‍♂️…..and that’s the worry. I can see more of a reason to start him today than last game. But there’s a big part of me - given how very, very  good City are - that thinks it’s just delaying the inevitable. And what merit is there in bringing Sulemana on when we’re 2, 3 or 4 down? Given where we are and how many points there are left to gain I’d rather we took a few risks early on and then hopefully get something to defend.

We’re potentially 6 points adrift before we kick off. Statistically this season we’ve taken around 7 games to accumulate 6 points. With 8 games left I think the fat lady has sung.

She has, pre match talk seems to be on whether we can avoid another 9-0 rather than win the game , sad indication of where we are.
