  • Lighthouse changed the title to Ruben Selles - Official: Leaving after Liverpool

Gutted he's gone. We'll look back at our narrow defeats in the top league, and wonder what little tweaks would have taken us to success. If only it were his team, and he wasn't saddled with the debris of previous managers.

I'm glad they've announced it now as it gives the fans the chance to show their appreciation as a chapter comes to an end. I hope he gets another post soon, so that he can either develop that tactic with a squad it suits. Or that he gets a chance from scratch to implement other plans, free from the relegation pressure and issues at a club in our league.

It would make no difference which managers we tried after sacking Ralph. There isn't a manager in the world who could produce enough goals from our squad's forwards and midfielders to stay up this season.

I think he'll probably carve out a good career for himself in time. Seems a very decent chap. But this wasn't the club, the situation, or the stakes to be learning on the job.

That's on the board for giving him a hospital pass.

No experience, not able to bring in any players or even any support staff - what were they expecting him to achieve with a squad that two experienced managers (a Bundesliga runner up, and, with respect, one of the best managers in Europe) couldn't squeeze a fucking thing out of?

It didn't work. Obviously. It was never likely to. Good luck to him.

I think he will forge a successful managerial career in a lower league either in England or abroad. Likeable guy is Ruben, however he didn't have enough experience in my opinion to take on the job. Too many questionable decisions including changes made to the team on a weekly basis and tactics. The right decision has been made by the club. I wish Ruben well for the future.

Out of his depth from day 1 and should never have been given the job permanently when caretaker.  Embarrassing that the ownership basically gave up on our Premier League status at such a relatively early stage of the season.

He seems a really likeable chap and part of me feels sorry for him for the shit show that he inherited. That being said, Chelsea and Utd away aside, the peformances managed to get worse under Selles than they were under Jones, which was some achievement. Just so negative and at times it looked like we had no clue what we were doing. Just too much of an ask for his first proper job.

Will probably land himself a job somewhere in Europe, maybe Portugal or La Liga 2 and I hope he does. Will certainly follow his next steps with interest

Does anyone want to go back through this thread and quote those that said “What an appointment Selles is” three months ago? 🤣

How times change!

Seemingly you do James, so why don't you do it yourself?

You can start with me. I was one of Ruben's biggest supporters early in his tenure.

After the almighty clusterfuck of Mad Nate Jones, we were all desperate for change. Anyone but Jones was the general feeling on here. When Ruben first took charge, he was like a breath of fresh air through the Club. He had some charisma about him, the players clearly wanted him, and two wins from his first three games brought a feeling of positivity and hope where there had been none for so long.

I believed and hoped that this newfound feelgood factor could inspire us to at least make a go of fighting against relegation.

It was my mistake.

Sadly, after a long and brave battle against serious illness, (I hope I am wrong again, and you can give me my own special Mr. Men badge) it is looking possible that this disgusting debacle of a season could be my dear old Dad's last experience of watching our beloved Saints together. I was desperate for such a courageous man's last memories of our team to not be of these pathetic bottlejobs dragging us down without a whimper. For a short while, Ruben Selles gave me that hope.

When he first took over he told us his first priority was to make us harder to beat. Initially, he made good progress on that. He also said he didn't want to change too much too soon, so we'd start off reverting to Ralph's system, as it was something the players already knew. For a small handful of games, it sort of worked. We were pressing more intelligently, and making more of a fight of games. Then we got smashed by Villa, and it all fell apart.

From that point on, Ruben looked like the proverbial rabbit caught in the headlights. And that is where his downfall truly took hold. At this point, he had to jettison dabbling with the old Ralphball system. It was already a busted flush. He absolutely had to be his own man from here on, and implement his own ideas. He needed to live or die by his own philosophy, but he essentially bottled it, and continued to hide behind "the playbook."  That clearly lost the confidence of the players, and we never recovered.

There were still moments of false hope to prolong the agony, but the moment Selles subbed off Romeo Lavia for Diallo in the 88th minute and threw a 3-1 lead at Arsenal, was the point he lost me completely, and I could delude myself no longer. We were fucked.

Despite his obvious faults and mistakes along the way, Ruben was clearly a good guy, and some of the nastiness he got pelted with on here was over the top. He was dropped in at the deep end of a Premier League relegation dogfight, with no previous experience, and was always on a hiding to nothing. If he can recover from the severe battering his confidence in himself will have taken from this trainwreck of a season, then like others, I still think there's a fair chance for him to carve out a decent managerial career for himself. If he drops down the pecking order and builds himself up again from a more appropriate level, where the media glare is not so sharp and the pressures less intense.

I for one thank Ruben for his efforts and wish his all the best for his future.

Ultimately, he just was not good enough here, but our relegation is not on Ruben. That dishonour lies firmly at the feet of Rasmus The Deluded Revolutionary, and the fucking gutless bunch of cunts who pissed about in our shitty white with a little bit of red shirts all season. This Club can't even put together a half decent kit anymore, let alone assemble a squad fit to wear the monstrosities.

So fill ya boots James. Have a good old laugh at my expense. Or maybe grow up, and choose to be better than that mush.

Sorry to hear about your Dad, Rivers. They are the reason most of us support the team we do and sharing it with them is what it’s all about. There are more important things in life than football.

Rivers post above is spot on by the way, and echoes a lit of my sentiments.

Im pretty vocal on here these days but I’m happy to concede I thought the Selles appointment possibly had legs in it, that judgement was probably born out of my utter dismay at the whole Jones episode and I too believed that maybe, with familiarity (tactics/faces) we could have just enough to stay up

Ultimately I do think there is a good coach in Selles, clearly the players liked him and his style on the training pitch, I even think, although they ended up too cautious some of his tactical plans were actually largely correct, they just never were carried out effectively

He isn’t a manager though, certainly not yet, unless it was hus relationship wity the players, that was too close and not robust enough that allowed them to effectively down tools

I wish him the best but his time is up, I’d suggest he moves back into a coaching role, finds a team (of other coaches aswell) that suits and bed his managerial reigns in at lower sides/youth sides… this was too much too soon.. if at all for him

You are very generous. I just see him picking Aribo randomly and continuing with Mo.

My tongue was more than slightly in my cheek. Probably less so as I kept typing. 🙂

Like Jones, he would have been mad not to accept the role. He'd have seen Marsch come in for talks, and know that even his own coaching position, might be sidelined or short lived.

Some of the signings we'd just got in, were for Jones. Had the club stuck with someone who preferred the pressing, and bought for that, Selles would have inherited better options for his style. But he was as hamstrung as his predecessors were.

It was a horrible watch, but I do see the logic in the tactic. Persisting with it though, means either he had no faith in the players to try something else, his own ability to change, or simply didn't know how to change.

I even get why managers would pick Mo. All of them have picked him. Not  that they feel blessed to be able to do so, but because he fits with what they want to do slightly ahead of the others, who look like bigger duds in their tactics.

It's been such a shambles all the way through the club. I can't complain about the investment. I can't blame managers being offered such big moves. But the buck does stop with Rasmus who would have been responsible for the recruitment policy, the managerial signings, the back room decisions, nearly every one of which has been dreadful.

Yet, there's a parallel world where their backing of Ralph was reinforced by the strikers who did sign in that last week. Who then offered us creative outlets to get us to safety. Allowing Romeu to go was an awful decision, but a few extra goals may have got us to stumble through, between periods when Lavia wasn't fit.

Instead their risky model came right back to bite them. Not really anything Selles had control over.

EDIT: Besides which, I undermined my own post later on down the thread. 🙂

Ralph, Jones and finally Selles fell into the same trap and all produced a clusterfuck. When will they ever learn that they can't come in with a way/style/formation and shoehorn the available players into it. It doesn't work. We had say 30 players, so it's who is left sided, who is right sided, who defends, who plays in the middle, who attacks. Who is strong, who is weak, who is quick, who is slow, who is thick, who is sharp, who is strong in the air, who is weak, who is accurate who can't hit a cow's arse with a banjo, etc.

Next it's pick a team. Not a system. Pick the strongest players and the specialist positions. At Saints,  KWP and Perrault ( we needed to buy a left back in January) Lavia, JWP, Alcaraz,  Adams (not a proper striker, Not good enough despite chances. I'd have brought Tella back. Centrebacks. ABK and Salisu. (With Injuries Bednerak) that leaves Armstrong and Sulemana.

So what system,4-3-3 or 4-4-2 . That would give me, Bazunu, KWP, ABK, Salisu, Perrault, Armstrong, Lavia, JWP, Alcaraz, Adams, Sulemana. that could be 4-2-3-1  with Lavia and JWP behind a three Sulemana Alcaraz and Armstrong. with Adams up front. Probably for me the 4-2-3-1. Either way the players are the key, find the players then devise the shape that suits the players. Style, let the players play, no pissing about at the back, get the ball out wide quickly, at least three defenders and one midfielder back. Attack outside to in and defend inside to out. Let the team dictate the shape. Guardiola has a favourite shape so he buys the players that suit it and play them in their natural shape.

We were relegated because of the stupidity of the three managers trying to shoehorn unsuitable players into their systems and putting the cart before the horse. Good riddance to all of them.

I think would have been a nice gesture to let Selles leave before the Liverpool match & do a draw from the database & whichever fan wins takes charge of the team  for the day. It would have been some great PR, would lighten the mood on what will be a dismal day, & would be hilarious if we somehow snatched a point!

Arguably the most successful manager in the last forty years was Alex Ferguson who played basically a simple 4-4-2 system with every player fitting in beautifully. The genius was the simplicity.

Completely agree.

we have been crying out to play 4-2-3-1. With the middle of the 3 being the most creative and having a drifting role (Stu or Alcaraz) with pace on the flanks, Theo, Djenepo, Sulemana, Edozie, Adam Armstrong putting in crosses for Adam’s or Tall Paul.

the holding 2 of JWP and Lavia.

We had 2 managers especially who tried to be too clever, went completely negative to nick a result.

there’s a reason managers like Dyche, Redknapp, Alladyce, Hodgson can turn a group of underperforming players around it’s because they do the absolute basic right.

Pick players who have been playing in their positions since they started playing at 5, pick your best players, if you’re not scoring, pick players who can actually be creative, score goals

jones and Selles didn’t do anything of the sort

No, Brighton absolutely sh*toting the bed against them in one of the most bizarre games of the season has kept them up. They’ll likely stay up on 36 points, which is absolutely crawling to safety really, and if it weren’t for Pickford, they’d have finished bottom.

So the other games where Everton collected points are irrelevant then because they beat Brighton? They also beat Arsenal in one of his first games in charge. Am no fan of Everton and wanted them do go down as much as anyone else, but to say Dyche hasn't had any input in keeping them up is ridiculous.
