I didn't catch Southgate's team selection press conference livem but apparently he said the reason for leaving out JWP is because "He’s only recently got back into the team at Southampton"... hmmm.... interesting definition of 'recently'....

Whereas Delph, for example, has featured in 1 (one) of Man City's premier league games in 2019 (in January).... nothing contradictory there then Gareth....

This is in part why players feel they need to move to big clubs to get international recognition.

The likea of Barkley and RLC have done next to nothing this season, and certainly have no consistency. Yet they play for Chelsea.

On the flip slide (and if it were the same for everyone which it clearly isn't) I like that it takes more than 6 or 7 good games to get in the squad. You should have to show consistent high levels.

Personally feel Redmond unlucky not to be in the shake up but his position arguably has England's outstanding players.

That's a real surprise, but if i'm honest I couldn't care less.

Leaves him with us to train and practice, rather than being bogged down with national team ********. Of which there is always national team ********.

Absolutely. Would much rather he stays in training with us and continues his improvement over the remainder of the season rather than having his head turned by distraction with England. If he keeps playing the way he is (or improves even more) he will get his chance soon enough.

I think Gunn, Wan-Bissaka and JWP can feel themselves hard done by.

I mean Butland is playing Championship football for a start, Pickford has been erratic and Heaton is in decent form but is surely not a long term option,

Trippier has been in poor form.

And then that midfield, Delph, Henderson, Dier, Loftus-Cheek and Barkley, you have to question all of those on form/appearances or both to be honest.

But have to say from a selfish point of view its good for us. The more we have here to work with the better over the next 3 weeks and to not get injured.

Wan-Bissaka should be a shoe-in. JWP I think can count himself a bit unfortunate but he needs to maintain his standard. Gunn a bit early for him I think.

However if you compare some of the players he has picked who are out of form or their club sides - There is an argument for them all to be included.

I think Redmond is a way off if i'm honest but having a sound season.

Either way, not bad news for Saints IMO

How does Delph, Barkley, Loftus-Cheek and Henderson get in when they don’t even feature that much for their EPL team?

Thought Southgate was doing okay but that England squad is crazy.

Fair enough, but what you are saying about having to play for a big club to get an England squad call up isn't true given the players we have had called up in the last 4 or 5 years.

I guess it does mean that Southgate doesn't really rate JWP as anything more than a very good dead ball specialist.

To be fair, it is only recently that we have started to truly appreciate him again. Would he be given the same role position he has for Saints? If not we know he has struggled in other parts of midfield until now.

Southgate has been quite lucky, but he has quite a lot of mistakes in him already as in the semi final he failed to take ff the inneffective Ali Dhia and not put energy on in the midfield to close down Modric. He alsoleft Kane on who was also patently struggling with injury, but took off Sterling who had kept the backline of Croatia deep.

If Southgate is saying JWP has only just come back and is not in the squad for that reason, that is complete BS.

Delph - this year (ie since 1st January 2019)

Played 18 minutes last night in the CL at right back.

Played 10 minutes on 20th January in the PL vs Huddersfield as defensive midfielder.

Played 90 minutes on 23rd January in the 2nd leg of the EFL Cup against Burton Albion (when they were 9-0 up from the first leg).

A total of 118 minutes

Loftus-Cheek is somewhat better this year.....

Played 15 & 28 minutes in 2 games in the Europa League.

7 sub appearances in the PL - 53, 13, 7, 25, 13, 12 and 34 mins

2 sub appearances in the FA Cup - 42 and 25 mins

and 31 mins in the EFL cup final

A total of 298 minutes

JWP, this calendar year

Played 900 minutes in the 10 games we have played in the PL

Played both games in the FA Cup - 90 and 120 mins

ie he has played every minute of every game we have had this year.

A total of 1,110 minutes

Not sure Southgate is being all that truthful. He was his Captain for England under 21's when in charge so must know what JWP is about.

I think this is the point. If he doesn't feel JWP is right for the team then say so. Don't come up with an excuse that makes you look like a plum!

Would have been pleased for him had he been selected, but from an entirely Saints perspective I'd rather he spent the next couple of weeks under Ralph's guidance and focused on the job in hand rather than his head being turned.

Keep up the current form and he'll get his chance with England.

Let's remember that it was only recently we weren't sure JWP was good enough to start for saints. A good run of form makes us take more notice and appreciate him, but it might take longer for others to rate him as highly. Southgate chose players he felt had performed well for him in the England set up before, I guess.

Squad is bizarre, 3 right backs and 3 left backs.

JWP unlucky but just has to keep being consistent as england’s Midfield isn’t great.

Henderson off injured tonight, so you never know... though he might try and call up another full back instead as we look a bit light there.

It's clearly been a few years of hard work to get himself to the place he is now physically, not just since RH came in. He's bulked up and become more dynamic. This was actually in evidence during the Puel season, where people forget he was playing really well for the most part, and he was showing he could compete in CM.

I've always liked the idea of playing him in there, because he has such a good range of passing that it helps us break out of our own half and get on the attack. That's why the double sub worked so beautifully yesterday: pace to get in behind, and someone in CM more able to quickly get the ball wide to Bertrand and Valery as they bombed forward. Always defended JWP on the basis of his technical ability (too easily out of favour for someone who 'gets their foot in' IMO) but even I was wondering if it wouldn't end up happening for him here just 4 months ago. Delighted he's found a manager to who gets it and suddenly those FKs start dipping inside rather than agonisingly wide of the post, as seemed to happen for ages.

But as you say he did that years ago, it's the manager that has helped him get to this level, by telling him to be much more aggressive. There was an article very early on in Ralphs reign where he said something along the lines of that which someone could find.

He has some limitations so he needs to maximise all he has got. Adding that aggression into his game has helped him win more 50/50s and get into the box in front of defenders to score rebounds.

Also the great freekicks have gone in and not hit the bar or been saved recently which is one of his strengths finally coming to fruition.

Good stuff.

The three left backs thing is weird, but Walker plays at centreback for England so it's only 2 Right backs really. You could argue that he only needs to pick one right back and then could use Walker as cover if that right back gets injured, but then you're losing your first choice right back AND one of your first choice centrebacks to another position, so...

Didn't walker say after World Cup he wanted to return to playing right back though.

Still, is he picking the squad for having a full season or these couple of matches? No way we need 5 or 6 full backs, plus I thought Delph (and Young) got into the WC squad as he could also play full back...!

10 defenders but only six midfielders (discounted the now injured Henderson) seems bizarre.

England need him. There aren't enough offering much in midfield. If they play a 3 then he's ideal.

During the World Cup they played Trippier largely for set pieces when Walker is one of the best right backs around, certainly attacking. A midfielder who can take set pieces would be a huge asset. And JWP is as useful throughout the game as most the midfielders picked anyway.

They played Trippier because he’s a good right-back - the set pieces are a bonus.

Might not have have a good year but he’s a class RB. Though Wan Bissaka can count himself really unlucky... haven’t only 7 players been able to get past him this season?

Not sure that's right actually. Walker did play in the World Cup, but as part of the back 3. Trippier is better offensively than Walker, whose best attribute going forward is his pace (as opposed to Trippier who is an excellent crosser). Walker's pace was obviously a valuable asset defensively as well, and he's generally a better defender than many give him credit for. Playing as a CB was a bit of an issue for him in terms of positioning but with a back 3/5 I can see why Trippier was preferred as the wing back.

Yep (on Trippier). Thought Wan-Bissaka was superb against us.

Cant agree, Walker is a better RB than Trippier, faster, better offensively and defensively, reason why one plays at City and the other still at Spurs.

Walker is a better RB than Trippier - agree (RB, not RWB).

faster - agree

better offensively - disagree in that Trippier's final ball is much better

and defensively - agree

The difference is that Trippier played as RWB and Walker was still deployed in the team. As a wing back your defensive qualities aren't as important. Obviously if you think Walker is better going forward then fine, but people often confuse 'getting forward' with quality. Walker suits Man City because they look to get in behind teams and pull balls back across the six yard box. England don't do this as much as rely on crosses from further out, often in the air. I'm not sure how anyone could argue that Walker beats Trippier in that regard.

One of England's main threats had been pace and quality at full back/wing back with Walker and Rose. Rose lost form and got injured, but Walker ends up in a back 3. Purely so they can play someone with set piece delivery. Far slower player, nowhere near the same standard in attack, not as good a footballer and not such a good defender. So they struggled to create as much in open play.

You have Walker and Sterling lining up together down the same flank regularly for one of the best sides in the world. Madness not to use that.

Well it depends whether you think England changed their gameplan to suit Trippier, or whether Trippier was better suited for the gameplan they had. If you're playing with overlapping full backs getting to the byline and pulling the ball back across goal (like City do) then yes Walker is better. But Trippier has a better delivery into the box, he isn't just a set piece taker, and for this reason I would argue that if your gameplan is to work the ball wide and put crosses in then he is better suited for that.

I think people get confused with what constitutes a better RB.

Defensively, I think Trippier is better, though Walker is quicker and because of his pace, it allows him to get back into defensive positions quicker/recover. On the flipside, offensively Trippier is far better in terms of his final ball. It's all very well having someone who is rapid up the flanks but if the delivery isn't any good then it's not much use.

I think Walker was utilised brilliantly at the WC - not a natural CB but provided excellent recovery cover for Stones/Maguire whilst also allowing us to 'double up' down the wings when we needed to.

Oh - and the fact Rose and Young went to the WC was criminal.

Agree with most of that, but Walker is also quite good one on one defensively. Again, mainly because his pace means he is hard to beat, but you can't really take speed out of the equation - he might only be good because of his speed, but it still means he's good!

Yeah, you said it about the one-on-ones; that's what I was trying to get at, but my head wasn't working right!
