Has Walcott been officially announced?

A suggestion earlier in the thread that we're holding off on the new LB until our financial year ends. Maybe the same for youngsters and Theo?

Depends what you mean by "announced". It was announced on 18th May that Theo would sign a 2 year deal, but his contract with Everton runs until 30th June, so technically he has not signed yet.

Outside of our obvious need for two LBs and another RB, signing another striking option would be next on the list imo. Even if Ings stays for another year, he will get the inevitable niggling injuries which will take him out for 8-10 games a season. That leaves with just Adams as our only other striker who we could rely on for goals (although hes better for his support/hold up play). Not convinced with either Walcott or Redmond playing up top and I'm afraid that Long, N'Lundulu and Obafemi just arent good enough options for the PL at present (the latter two could do with a season loan to a Championship club).

From what I've seen of Armstrong, he looks to be of the Ings mould. Smart movement, good finisher and can create something out of nothing. He'll also be brimming with confidence with the season hes had. Also quite frankly we need to start exploring replacement options for Ings because if he doesnt go this summer, or January, he will definitely be gone next summer. Why not bring somebody in this window, at least we'll have 6-12 months to see if they can cut it before Ings does move on

Coming from a lower division, how do you think he compares with Che Adams who was scoring for fun with his former club, Birmingham?

Last two seasons at Blackburn, Armstrong has 46 goals in 91 games - just over 0.50 goals per game

Che Adams had 31 goals in 81 games in his last two seasons at Brum - 0.38 goals per game

Obviously better goals output for Armstrong and surprisingly he also has more assists in the same period (12 compared to Adams 7). Although Che has improved considerably in his hold up/support play since stepping up to the PL.

If we can talk Blackburn down from their 15 million asking price to something around 10-12 million, it would be a steal. Considering we paid around 15 million for Che

Venky's apparently asking for £25m.

He has a year left on his contract and is playing for a Championship club. They can ask for £25m all they want, they aren't getting it.

Makes him a more likely target for Saints IMO because Ings’s future won’t be decided early in the window and Norwich will move on if Venky’s are asking for too much £££. Blackburn can’t afford for him for go for nowt summer 2022 unless they risk a smaller fee in January or have made a storming start and look like promotion candidates. Less likely with a 2nd ACL for Dack. The price will soften and Saints will have a bit more of an idea as the summer goes on if the clubs Ings would prefer have secured their first choice targets. Eg is Armstrong an Ings replacement or have they shifted Lemina and others so they can afford a third striker if Ings stays + Adams. Obafemi could be part ex and very handy at that level.

Just to caveat that a little, IIRC Armstrong takes pens for Blackburn and I don't think Che did for Brum. I'd also say they are different sorts of players, certainly Che seems to have had to evolve into a different sort of striker than the one he was at Brum, whereas Adams has a lot of pace and runs in behind probably more.  They'd probably be a decent combo.

Can't see us spending near £25 million on him unless Ings goes so if he's an additional striking option we'd have to get that price down.

I agree, I can only see us going for Armstrong as a replacement for Ings if we get an offer for him that we can't refuse. Other areas of the squad need addressing with more urgency.

Thought we had a deflated market? £25m for a championship striker with 1 year on his contract? Madness.

We allegedly initially put a £35m price tag on Hojbjerg (https://www.dailymail.co.uk/sport/football/article-8404039/Southampton-place-35m-price-tag-captain-Pierre-Emile-Hojbjerg.html) and he went for £15m so I think it comes down a lot. I think you value them how you would if it weren't the last year and then it steadily drops as the summer goes on.

Villa spending £33+ on that Norwich player who is unproven at PL level will certainly inflate the market.

Linked to a new attacking mid! This is reposting Tutto Mercato which apparently has dubious reliability so don't get your hopes up.

Anyway the player is Brais Mendez of Celta Vigo. He is 24 and has the following league stats.

2020/21: 9 goals 0 assists, 2678 minutes
2019/20: 0 goals 2 assists, 1470 minutes
2018/19: 6 goals 7 assists, 2395 minutes
2017/18: 1 goal 1 assist, 936 minutes

So a great season three years ago and a decent on last season but a pretty poor one between them. Looks good.

I've noticed papers will guess at prices and favour the clubs they feel.provides more readership for them, either way in the equation. So in that example it makes it look good for Spurs.

Also the selling club will never advertise or hint at their real selling price, its all about negotiation. The Venkys (if true) are just playing the game correctly, put a price out there which isn't going to kill the interest whilst also knowing their acceptable price.

Actual prices are rarely what the papers say up front.

The Birmingham press are really pushing this Ward Prowse to Villa story, now saying the owners want him in before pre season.  Anyone know if there's any truth in this, are the club delaying as long as possible to get season tickets sold?

I personally think this would be disastrous for the club, I could understand if he went to a top 6 club, but not Villa, selling our captain to a team we consider to be our rivals would just show potential targets and the fans exactly how we view ourselves in the league

Unproven? He was very good for Norwich the season they went down. I’m amazed he stayed if I’m honest.

Unproven? He had the third highest amount of chances created last time he played in the Prem. Buendia is a superb player.

He signed a 5 year contract last summer and I doubt he would even want to move to Villa, it's a sideways move at best a minor move up just because they are spending a bit more than us, but likely Villa are going to lose their best player anyway and without him they were about as bad as we were in the second half of the season.

So very unlikely he would agitate for that move and we have no reason to sell, so they would have to throw silly money at us I reckon, £60 million plus and even then I doubt whether he'd even go, why potentially tie yourself down to Villa for the next 2-3 years with mid table football and potentially miss out on a move to a bigger club?

He'd be a steal at £15m and I'd bite their hand off for a player of his level for that much. Sod the contract situation.... If he is available for £15m we should just pay it and run before someone else comes in! There aren't many players like him in that price bracket, miss him and who else are we signing.

We’ll probably accept £20m

Imagine it will be the buying teams media saying £15m plus add-ons, Blackmore and Co saying £25m plus, truth probably somewhere in the middle.

These opposing figures will then be dragged out and used in arguments by the usual suspects on here to suit their particular agenda.

Rinse and repeat.

No-one is paying that. If they do, then we can ask for £40m for Ings minimum

Daily Mail had him as valued as £8 million. I expect the actual price anybody pays will be somewhere from £10 to £18 million with add ons and all that. Much like us with Ings they won't want to be mugged off but with a year left on his deal they are unlikely to be able to risk him leaving for free.

It's not a priority for us (if Ings stays) but if we weren't so hard up he'd be exactly the sort of signing I'd like to see us make.

Brighton about to drop £25m on a striker while we're operating in and around the £7-10m mark 😬

https://www.theguardian.com/football/2021/jun/16/brighton-agree-record-25m-deal-to-sign-stuttgart-forward-nicolas-gonzalez-argentina?CMP=Share_iOSApp_Other

That is arguably a direct rival in the part of the table we operate in with about 4 times the spending power we have.  We're only heading in one direction unless we get an owner able to invest.

Who are they about to sell though? White, Lamptey and Bissouma all being linked with big money moves

Exactly, a lot goes on in the background before it's even known.

Villa for e.g potentially throwing all this dollar around, I'm fairly sure that will be on the expectation that Grealish goes for mega-bucks. Of which there have probably been conversations already, so Villa are looking for similar players (of which Emile-Smith Rowe is one)

Same with Bissouma and White for Brighton, big bucks to be made there.

Unfortunately we don't have anyone - bar our captain - who can generate seriously big bucks for us to then go and invest heavily.

That genuinely staggered me - had to look it up. But guess that averages at 40m a season, so not crazy. They also had a very small net spend last year, so will be interesting to see if that continues in the current landscape.

Fair to say there’s quite a lot of wasted money in there. £202m to improve 0% is a lot of money.

I find this thread so dull and boring but I keep coming back to it in the vain hope that we will get in a decent player who will enhance the team immediately instead of some young player who may have the potential to develop not sure I can remember when I was excited by a player's arrival

Bloom has put £394m into Brighton over the last 10 years. £300m in loans and the rest as equity.

I wonder if he is expecting those loans to be repaid?

£25 million for a player who has a career goal scoring record of 34 in 126 games, with 14 of those goals coming in the German 2nd division (which is less competitive than the Championship).

He has 8 goals in 45 games in the Bundesliga, I know he's only 23 and is an Argentinian international, but that somewhat looks like a gamble to me. He wasn't even first choice for a mid table Stuttgart team last year, he only started 10 games.

I mean there are players like Kramaric, Kalajdzic, Weghorst, even maybe Andre Silva from the Bundesliga, who are all probably gettable by PL clubs, who scored way more than this guy.  It seems an odd one for a team crying out for a clinical finisher to spend probably a record fee on somewhat who has hardly been prolific in his career.

Agreed, big gamble.  Brighton do like the hipster signings though, most of which don't come off.
