Hello @Dan Sheldon, The Athletic. You are very welcome here.......just don't take any notice of some of the moronic "characters" that inhabit the place. You will soon work out who they are. The vast majority of us are really nice people!!😁

Hey!

Haha. I’ve been called lots of things over the last few days so my tin hat is well and truly on. It can go too far at times, but I also know I can’t please everyone in the role I do. It’s part & parcel of the job.

Hopefully by being relatively active on here, it keeps a line of communication open & feedback/ideas are always welcome. While I ultimately work for The Athletic, my purpose is to serve the supporters.

Hi Dan

I also work for a media organisation with a paywall, so I know you why can't just give SaintsWeb members/subscribers free access to all your excellent articles in The Athletic -- but if you can post a few choice extracts on here that will be much appreciated 😉

Pornhub Premium isn’t quite the same as the Athletic

Welcome Dan good to have you on board.

However don't think you're getting ITK status on here that easily 😀

That celebrity status has to be earnt.

On to Norwich. I feel moderately confident of a win, which will be amazing. Will keep the impressive home form going.

My wife (Norwich fan) failed to rub their victory in my face earlier in the season (the fool) so I've promised her if we beat them on Friday then I won't do the same! 😈

Honestly for all the improvement Norwich have made under Smith, I still think defensively they're frail and they're still relying heavily on Pukki up front to get the goals. We have it in us to beat someone heavily soon, so why not Friday under the lights and live on Sky. Same line up unless Perraud can come back in.

3-0 Saints.

We are due to give someone a good tonking and Norwich defending atm all points to a heavy defeat for them at some point so I’m predicting a 5-1 hammering with goals for all our strikers and Armstrong and moi getting on the score sheet .. maybe a top bins set piece from Jwp to cap off a confidence builder for the cup game vs the irons on  2nd march .

On the back of excellent results against Citeh, Spuds, Utd and the Dugout champions, it would be so ‘Saintsy’ to lose at home to Norwich, BUT things seem different this season, the team appear to be better drilled, more disciplined, more focused and they are practising the dark arts of the game (at last). So comfortable 3-0 win it is!

Thanks for the ban Lighthouse 👍🏼

They only conceded 3 against a scintillating Liverpool?

I'm going to go with 1-1 again. Worked for the Everton game...

But seriously, it's the kind of fixture we underestimate and Dean Smith is a good manager. Win this one and we can say we are a totally transformed team, I'd say. But really don't think we will smash them.

Won't be an easy game, but if we play well then we will win.  We owe them one, after than car crash of a performance at their place. Armstrong and Elyounoussi to cause them all sorts of problems breaking from midfield.

Would be nice to give someone a good tonking, but no doubt, if the team get complacent, they could nick a win. Get the job done boys.

Friday night at 8pm holds bad memories for all of us but hopefully this’ll be different !

Shame for the Norwich fans with a long journey and a late return home…

Its on live here in South Africa but with a 10pm kick off I should be suitably lubricated in advance of the kick off !

COYS 😇

Dean Smith couldn't win at SMS with Villa, who have a much better squad than Norwich do, and our performance levels currently are much better than they were around the time of that Villa game.

We didn't perform 'badly' at Carrow Road IMO. We just didn't take our chances and they scored from their only two serious attempts on goal thanks to McCarthy's incompetence.

Just as with Everton on Saturday, they have improved a bit recently but if we play to the level we're capable of we will beat them comfortably.

12th over last 6 games above the likes of Brighton & Leicester. Just saying like (but I think we’ll win).

Yes, they're much improved. And playing better than Everton right now. Not a foregone conclusion by any stretch.

Gunny's been doing quite well in nets too. Which is nice to see - got a bit of confidence back.

We didn't entirely. First half we were excellent other than killing the game but, familiar story back then, failing to take chances and largely shite second 45.

Norwich had/created some fantastic chances in the first half against Liverpool and could easily have been in front. Pukka missed a glorious chance with lots of time to pick his spot. We need to be on the money again. It's far from an easy game.  Unlike Everton, I don't think they will fade after 15 minutes.

Hey!

Alex McCarthy signed a new contract last summer. He conducted all the relevant club media at the time he signed it but the announcement got pulled for a reason I do not know.

With Forster likely to play until the end of the season, and looking very solid, it's going to look very strange when he walks on a free and the club announces that McCarthy stays. A discussion for another day...

Definitely this. Can't afford to get complacent for this one. They aren't too bad going forward, just very poor in defence. If we go at them hard in the first half, we should be ok

What a great game that was. One of many in 89/90. Great team and season as a whole. Loved watching the games from the back of the Milton End. We took teams apart

You forget just how lively Le Tiss was in his younger years. Obviously not super quick like Rodney, but quick enough and with fantastic dribbling skills.

A word of caution please. Pride come before a fall and being overconfident will lead to tears if you fail. Don't think for one moment that Narch will be walkover. I well remember the 20th Nov game where posters were predicting a huge win for Saints. We lost ! This time I hope for a win but never take it for granted.Unlike that overpaid clown Lawrenson on BBC Sport I don't make predictions. I want to see a good free flowing game. We are playing good football. Long may it continue. COYS

You're spot on, I'm sure most of us who have been going for years know that a slip up in a game like this is just waiting to happen.

We've already lost to them once this season so Ralph won't be complacent and they've had some good results recently, especially winning 1-0 at Wolves and I was impressed with their 3-0 win away at Watford.

They are bottom of the league with by far the worst goal difference for a reason though.....

Hi Dan - great to see someone with direct access to the Saints management team on here. Welcome!

P.s. how do we know that you're not 'Glasgow Saint' in one of his various guises...? ;)

If DS ever misspells ‘etc’ as ‘ect’ the game will be up.

I was at that game as a kid, in the family centre at the Dell. It wasn’t full so we went up to the top row because my mate wanted ‘the best view’. It was astonishingly cold up there - a properly clear, Baltic night, accentuated by being high up and uncovered. It’s the coldest I can ever remember being at a football match. Then Matty turned in the best hat trick you can imagine. Went absolutely mental and forgot the cold after that. 4-1 win, bag of chips on the way home. Magic.

The 5-4 game is my strongest memory of us vs Norwich. As a kid the yo-yo of despair, elation, more despair and absolute elation.

As @Turkish said when I shared the video of the Everton home game, what a brilliant team we had that season.

Bonkers to think that MLT and Rodders scored 45 goals between them from the wings in a kamikaze 4-2-4 formation. Never a dull moment that season. Ten out of ten for entertainment.

Probably my favourite ever season. Honestly, the quality of goals we scored that season was ABSURD. We could have had a GOTS contest for the league featuring only Saints goals. F**k you Robert Rosario 😂😀😂😂

I am cautiously confident on this, but it depends if Ralph does any tinkering with the team with an eye on West Ham cup game.

Only change for me would be to bring back Perraud for this one, but let the Broja/Adams fly, and hopefully score for fun.

We need to give soemone a bit of a spanking and its been long over due

But if we become the Saints of old, that old uninvited guest, Complacency, will creep back in the door like a ghost of ambitions past and we will be the ones losing.

Saints please, laugh in the face of Complacency and dont mess it up.

10-0 to dispell the ghost.

3 - 0 is what I hope for

Heart tells me 2-1

This is a very 'Saintsy' game to lose, though I don't think Norwich have it in their DNA to park the bus and be defensively solid with a low block, which is something historically we have struggled with at home so I think it will come down to who takes their chances more.

Would be also nice to jump over the current 'media darlings' that are Brighton and move up into 9th.

This also has to be the 'easiest' run of games we have had in a long long time, considering the level of these teams and their form at the moment.  Got to be at least 3 wins and a draw or two from this run otherwise it would be quite a let down considering our form and that most of the team is uninjured.

Which side wants it more? I reckon that's what it'll come down to. Normally we're pretty hot on pressing and going for the jugular - I'm sure Ralph will have us in the same mindset on Friday.

Can see us conceding if we're not careful - it would likely come down to complacency/lack of concentration if we do.

Three very different goals from Le Tiss as well to show the variety of his skills.

I thought you were pro-McCarthy? If so, glad you've seen sense. Would be madness to drop Fraser (at all)

Reckon if we win this Friday night Ralph should get manager of the month, even though it's likely Klopp will end February with a 100% win rate.

If we do win Friday night is it time to give this another airing?

"EIEIEIO, up the Premier League we go

And when we get to Europe, this is what we'll sing

We're Southampton, we're Southampton

Ralphy is our King"

We ain't got many songs but we did seem to do this quite well and loud and got plenty involved

I too thought they were pretty decent against Liverpool - it'll be a tough game

I am certainly pro-McCarthy compared to you, but you will find that I have always posted that I don't rate either keeper highly and that I wanted to see us sign two new keepers. I doubt I'd bother to support McCarthy on here if it wasn't to counter some of the posters like you that seem to go way over the top with the vitriol and criticism.
