Guido Carrillo - Official: Free Transfer to Elche

It's only Carillo that looked obviously dodgy mainly because of his record of not ever actually scoring any goals in professional football matches.

Vestergaard and Elyounoussi both looked like classic Saints signings (in a good way) at the time.

Vestergaard looked awful to anyone who had watched him. Everything we now know was obvious then: can't jump, can't run and turning speed of an oil tanker. Elynoussi on the other hand did look half decent to me but arguably looks an even worse signing than Vestergaard.

Whatever, £60m plus agents fees, signing on fees, wages for those 2 plus Carillo is appalling business.

The black box is a room full of videos. Presumably somebody must have watched videos of Vestergaard before we signed him. And anyone who watched him play in a match for us when he first arrived would have noticed how slow and unathletic he was so it's surprising that if we had an actual scout watching him play before we parted with so much money for him, he didn't notice Vestergaard's obvious deficiencies.

At the time we signed him I had a look at a few videos of him and my conclusion was "From what I've seen of him on videos, his lack of pace is a real cause for concern. Also, perhaps because he is so tall, and doesn't need to, he's not very good at jumping."

I'm not saying I'm a particularly talented scout because anyone who watched him play, even on videos, would have noticed the same deficiencies that we all have now that we've seen him play.

The signing of such players as Carrillo and Vestergaard indicates there was something seriously amiss in the club's current recruitment setup.

Anyone who watches YouTube highlights videos of a central defender is an effing weirdo in my opinion.

In fairness I only get to about twelve seconds in on videos of strikers before drifting off to Pornhub so let's just say all player Youtubes.

All this talk of videos and youtube clips of potential signings is one thing, but I can't believe we can spend eight figure sums on a player without having someone very senior at the club watching that player at least half-a-dozen times. Surely!!!

He was the manager’s choice and the club backed his ‘judgment’.

In my view itÂ’s quite simple. 4-5 years ago

When we made signings like Tadic, Van Dijk, Mane etc they all cost £10-£15m. Top players cost £40-£50m. We were shopping in the potentially good but unproven market. Since then transfer values have rocketed, top players cost £80-£100m, so it figures that what once cost £10-£15m, now cost £25-£30m, yet we are still shopping in the £15m market but this means that these players are at least a level down from the ones we used to get. Of course we might get lucky now and and again, Djenepo looks like he has something but we’re back to the days when we were signing the likes of Jelle Van Damme, Michael Nileson and Jaconsen where because the club had had success a couple of years previously with Niemi, the Svensons, And so on in that price bracket they forgot that prices go up and you have to pay more To get the same level.

If Wilson and Reed were part of the problem I donÂ’t know but if itÂ’s because theyÂ’ve only been allowed to spend this amounts from Goa and Kat then they are the problem.

Good post Turks, doubt people will "get" it though

We'd be able to get a couple of £25m level players if we had wasted all our money. Carrillo, Elyounoussi, Hoedt, Vesterguard, Lemina, not to mention manager sackings etc. We've wasted £100m easily. So it's no wonder we still have to shop for cheaper players.

We need to stay up for a year or two without wasting any more money, get the loans sold and then hopefully we can start investing properly again.

Why didn’t we get them when we bought Lemina and Hoedt?

I don't believe for a second that anybody said Mauricio Pelligrino could be the next Alex Ferguson.
They didn't. I suspect some posters wanted the manager to be given time to build and someone probably pulled out the old "Ferguson was almost sacked in his first season" routine..

... Either that or Shurlock's hashtag was a reference that he is having trouble keeping the misses happy in the bedroom...

No one pipes up that Pellegrino should have been given more time!

If only he had 3 years to build his own team, ffs

well you do need an instant impact to buy the fans trust!

most if not 99% could see within the first 8 weeks he wasn't up to scratch except the 2 most important of all! Reed and Krueger!

With hindsight those draws and that 4-1 win over Everton just papered over the cracks and brought him more time he did not deserve- that £19m I genuinely think should go down as one of worlds worst signing- at least Ali Dia only cost a months wage

They probably did, but they weren't going to admit their mistake.

“What do you want me to do, throw myself off a 20-storey building? If they said me going would make the team win, I would be gone in a minute,” manager Mauricio Pellegrino said after his Leganés team lost the derby against Getafe, leaving them stuck on the bottom of the table without a win all season and him on the edge.

Whilst this is an element we have had a serious issue with player selection and obviously do not - have not had the correct skill level at the club to recognise a very good player when buying in.

Looking at the under 23s this week this issue is reflected right through the first team squad and the under 23s who don’t have a single player within touching distance of the first team squad and I wouldn’t expect those players to cost 30m.

The quality or lack of it on show was truly atrocious against Blackburn. Maybe this is coaching maybe it’s poor recruitment but we have one hell of a mountain to climb before we are anywhere near where we need to be as an organisation.

I have mentioned this myself. Iam not sure how good somebody like Jaidi is as a coach. IMHO he is not the type of ex player that I would expect to coach kids a silky game. I dont want to be unfair but it seems to me that Les really didnt leave a good academy behind. Perhaps he only employed people who read his coaching manual

God the club have signed a load of guff over the last 3 years. Spend the January budget (if there is one) in paying these c**ts off. Let's start again.

Paying them off won’t achieve anything, we’re better off loaning them out even if we cover 90% of the wages.

What an absolutely ridiculous signing this was, surely got to be up there with the worst signings ever by any club. THis isn't even hindsight talking looking at his track record 26 years old and had only ever scored more than 10 goals in a season once, in the Argie league, signed by a manager who the Chairman openly admitted they'd considered sacking several times before the signing, then they did a few weeks later, he was never going to be the answer. For £5m he might have been worth a gamble but £20m just incompetence.

Money has been frittered away on players like Vestergaard and Carrillo who were clearly not good enough for the Premier League. About £100 million in transfer fees and wages has been poured straight down the drain on substandard players that no other Premier League club, with anyone with any common sense in their recruitment department, would want. That's where we need to start. It's no use giving our current recruitment department money to spend in January as they are more than likely to waste it.

Must have been a brown envelope job.

Nah......free use of a Super Yacht tied up to the Harbour side at the swimming pool for the Monaco Grand Prix weekend - and just to sweeten the deal a steady stream of scantily clad eye candy wafting up and down the decks serving Verve Cliquot bubbles from dawn to dusk.
